  1. Worked well there, I thought. I don't agree at all with the opinion either, but rolleyes as a response is stupid and immature, some might even interpret it worse than that. This is just part of the campaign though. Rolleyes doesn't do anything except aggravate people, hence my desire to see him eliminated.  Before we get rid of rolleyes, we should know what we're replacing him with. Many think we could do no worse than rolleyes, but there are many just as bad or worse.
  2. Howry should fake to third and throw to first. That move works 99.9% of the time.
  3. Cubs record when Pierre grounds out to second? I'm going to guess it's 54-75.
  4. Larussa bringing in a lefty to face a lefty? No way!
  5. Hendry did not want to hand the Cardinals the final piece of their World Series puzzle Yep. No way Neifi gets traded in the division.
  6. Lots of people have jobs they don't deserve. The above is not a good argument.
  7. I root for them to lose, but I root for most players, so I'm usually conflicted. I don't mind seeing Novoa blow a game, though. There are pitchers in Iowa and/or West Tennessee who should get a shot in the bullpen ahead of Novoa, including those who are currently starters.
  8. Yep. You could say that Tony Larussa beat us today, but not because of anything he did during the game. It's Tony's fault that teams now have "closers" that only pitch in "save" situations. If Dempster is our best reliever (and I don't think he is, but there's no question that he's better than Novoa), he should be pitching when the game is on the line, whether it's a save situation or not. In the bottom of the ninth in a tie game, Novoa should not be pitching if anyone else in the bullpen is breathing.
  9. I'd rather see the Cards make the playoffs so that maybe their management will think they're headed in the right direction. And as I've stated several times, I do like to buy Cards playoffs tickets and resell them to fund my Cubs ticket purchases.

  11. He'd hit about 18 HR at his current pace if he played everyday. What other numbers are you looking for? Just musing on if I think Murton/Pierre/Jones/Pagan again next year is any good, assuming Ramirez/Lee/Barrett are healthy and productive. Pierre has won me over. He sucked in April, but is now 3rd in the league in hits. Jones hasn't been a world beater, but he's been far from the .250 hitter people expected him to be. Pierre, according to Chris Dial at BBTF, has the worst arm of any CF in the NL. That should come as no surprise to NSBBers. However, both Dial's system and UZR agree that he has been the best defensive CF in the NL. On offense, I don't care about how many hits he has; Izturis gets a lot of hits. I do care about OBP, and he's still about 20 points below projections. And today's Dan Fox article at BP shows that Pierre has cost his teams runs from 2000-2005 by being thrown out so often in basestealing attempts. He won't be worth whatever he gets in free agency. I don't mind overpaying for talent, but overpaying for Pierre would mean not having enough to sign someone who could actually make a difference. And Jones' batting average might be better than what people thought it would be, but his OBP (which is what matters to me) is below projections. I don't hate Pierre or Jones, but neither is a wise use of resources.

  13. Pierre's PECOTA projections aren't dramatically better than Pagan's over the next 4 years. Did Pagan play CF in the minors?
  14. He's 9th in MLB in VORP, and he's within striking distance of everyone except Chipper Jones and Miguel Cabrera. And there are still people that will blame him for our offensive problems.
  15. Yep. The rule of thumb is that a 75% success rate is break-even. Pierre's at 72.1% right now.
  16. Juan Pierre has opened up a 3 CS lead in the caught stealing standings. Although he started off the season with a pretty good success rate IIRC, he is hovering around the break-even point right now. In today's Baseball Prospectus, Dan Fox has an article on base-stealing. Interesting fact: Pierre got picked off more than any other player from 2000-2005. By Fox's calculations, Pierre's failed steal attempts cost his teams almost 9 runs from 2000-2005, so even though he's a perennial stolen base leader, it hasn't been doing his teams much good. Three former Cubs were in the bottom ten basestealers: Jeromy Burnitz Neifi Perez Jose Hernandez More ammunition for Neifi-haters: he costs his teams runs by not getting on base, and once on base, he costs his teams runs by getting caught stealing. 17. Neifi was moved to the bottom of the order tonight and the Tigers lost. Coincidence? I think not. It's tough to be a savior from the 8 hole. Poor Neifi.
  18. Well, the increased revenues from the new ballpark allowed Jocketty to be flexible with payroll and sign guys who add veteran leadership to the clubhouse and experience on the field.
  19. Bynum would have scored had he not been picked off.
