  1. MLB may do away with Compensation picks from free agency. It's 50/50 right now according to ESPN.
  2. The Jays affiliation ended 4 years ago, and then we were the Cardinals for 2 years (they bought a Texas League team and moved them to Missouri) and we've had the Diamondbacks for 2 years as well. I think the decision to part was mutual between Tenneseee and Toronto. Toronto wanted their AA prospects closer to Toronto. I think the Smokies would have loved to have stayed with the Cardinals (not me though :( ), but they moved to Missouri. And that Jays affiliation was a LOOONG one. We got to see some great players come through Knoxville- Delgado, McGriff, Halladay, George Bell, and many many others. I didn't feel that amy of the last 4 years showed us much in terms of prospects passing through. Haren was pretty good, as was Molina, and who knew that Uggla would be the player he has this year? But, for the most part, I haven't been impressed with our last two affiliations.
  3. Amazing young talent? Is this a joke? Reggie Abercrombie? Dan Uggla (a utility infielder and career minor leaguer before his 2006 anomoly?) Willingham? Mitre? Nolasco? Come on, these guys aren't "amazing talent". Sure, you can say that about Hanley Ramirez, Miguel Cabrera, Willis, and possibly Amezaga, but not the entire team. Not even close.
  4. I've got a Smokies logo concept designed, but not sure how to share it with you guys. Similar to the script Smokies that currently appears on the jersey now, but the O is actually a Smoky Bear Cub in a red circle... similar to the old 80's cubbie design. The hat logo is nearly identical to the old Smokies TS, but I've modified the font slightly, and added the cubby bear logo. Funny how the Tennessee Smokies could be named after the mountains OR after the native Smoky Bear, which has Cubs of its own. The possibilities are endless. If someone can help me share it with you guys, I will gladly do so. email it to me and I'll upload it later today. I did last night.

  6. The Smokies don't play in Knoxville, sadly. They play in Kodak, a small town outside of Knoxville that lies on the edge of Sevierville.
  7. So, the Diamond Jaxx may become an affiliate of the Diamondbacks? Fitting. I'll do whatever I need to do, Jaxx. I'm all ears. Kirchhofer is definitely interested in exploring the possibilities. I think Tom Hart (radio voice of the Smokies) might also like to hear some of this. You can email them on the Smokies website, and they get back to you rather quickly. Those you will be looking for are: Doug Kirchhofer (President), Brian Cox (GM) and Tom Hart (Radio). let me know what I need to do here...
  8. So, you work for WATE, huh? I think you and I should definitely catch some Smokies games together next year!
  9. Update: 9/21, 12:07 pm I have received an email from Smokies president Doug Kirchhofer that sounds promising. In it, he states that one of the top priorities in an affiliate relationship is to build a strong connection to that team's fan base. He says that once things have settled a bit from the announcement, that he'd like to talk about this. If there is anyone from nearby who will be at the announcement, he mentioned that he'd love to meet me. I cannot be there, so if anyone else can, you should stop by. He'd be happy to meet you, and it is a great chance to continue to put the name northsidebaseball into his ear.
  10. For your information... http://www.smokiesbaseball.com
  11. I'm sure they will do what they can to help us out. The good thing is that the Cubs AA will remain in the Southern League North, which means that they will make multiple trips to West Tennessee as long as the Jaxx remain in the SL. Great question! I've emailed Doug Kirchhofer, President of the Smokies, and I will mention this to Bill Haslam (team owner) next week.
  12. Our attendance far outpaced the DJaxx. Near the top in the SL every year for the past 4, iirc. Even in the past two years, when the Smokies were a Diamondbacks affiliate. This is a town that supports its minor league ballclubs.
  13. Please give me a heads up for what we'd want from a relationship with the Smokies. I have spoken with Tom Hart, radio voice of the Smokies on several occasions, and I am friends with Bill Haslam, majority owner of the team. President Doug Kirchhofer is someone I have made little contact with, but is someone that I could be comfortable approaching if necessary. Bill would be my ticket in, I just need to know what we're looking for here.
  14. Well, if this helps at all, I am friends with Bill Haslam, majority owner of the Smokies. I'm sure I could mention this to him...
  15. Tavarez is starting for the Sox. I think the deal to the Padres is done, but they can't send Kottaras (at least not now) since he's on the 40-man and would never clear waivers. Probably going to be a PTBNL. I sincerely don't think that BOTH parties have to clear waivers. I think that's a misconception that alot of people here have. Clearly, Kottaras wouldn't have made it through, so there has to be something else at play here. I think we have a general misunderstanding of the rule. that doesn't make sense. they made it a PTBNL. the PTBNL can be anyone on the roster that's NOT on the major league roster. he doesn't have to pass through waivers. the PTBNL is probably an agreement between epstein and towers on kottaras. But, it ISN'T a PTBNL... it's Kottaras. Already named, and already shipped. Nowhere is it being reported that it's Wells for a PTBNL.

  17. MLB.com has now picked up the rumor, but stated it verbatim from what the Boston Herald reported. Defensive specialist? Ummm, okay.
  18. Actually, according to the Boston Herald, Kottaras is viewed as more than "decent" defensively. He's a defensive specialist who happens to get on base at a very good clip. Maddux and Walker for Kottaras and Chase Headley would have been a nice deal.
  19. If Theo pulls this off, he's a magician. Varitek buys Kottaras a full season in AAA, and by 2008, Boston has a nice young backstop ready to go full time. The Padres add a hefty lefty who does little to help them ensure anything more than a divisional series sweep at the hands of the Mets.
  20. Saw this on Red Sox.com: Kottaras for David Wells? Not sure I'd do that if I were San Diego.
  21. Saw this on cbs.sportsline: Jon Lester, SP BOS News: The Boston Herald reported young Boston pitcher Jon Lester, who left the team with back woes, is being tested for an array of potential internal illnesses, including cancer, after he was detected with enlarged lymph nodes. "There are a lot of personal things going on here that weigh on us a lot more than the losses and wins," Curt Schilling told the paper in apparent reference to the 22-year-old left-hander, one of Boston's top prospects. Possible cancer? Dang, I really hope this isn' true. Best of luck to Lester.
  22. Come on, folks... The Marlins are 9.5 games better than we are. They have Cabrera and Willis. We have ARam, Barrett, and Z, which I'd take. They have Hanley Ramirez, who I'd love to have in Chicago. Other than that, they don't have much. Uggla was a roster filler in the DBacks system, and Girardi has him playng in the All Star game as a rookie. We have better baseball players, and we play in a worse division, and they're almost 10 games better than we are? Girardi has done a marvelous job with that team. He'd be an upgrade over Baker without question.
  23. I remember in the Cubs.com days (pre-NSB) how many of the original NSB crowd would get angry if you suggested trading future stars like Kelton, Hill, Prior, and Choi for rentals who would help you win now. The mindset was "I want to win more than just one championship." I'd bet that has changed somewhat. Give me one. ONE. I'll take that.
  24. News: The Cubs placed Mark Prior on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with shoulder tendinitis, a move that could mean an end to the right-hander's season. The latest DL trip comes after he allowed five earned runs in three innings in an 8-6 loss to Milwaukee on Thursday. Prior didn't feel anything wrong with the shoulder, but a loss in velocity in the third inning led the team to send him back to Chicago for an MRI on Friday, which showed rotator cuff tendinitis. "I'm more disappointed for him," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "It's been a tough couple of years here, on and off the DL. He's not very happy about it." I really wish I remembered who it was that had the phrase "Mark Prior is NOT injury prone" in his signature. Looks a little foolish now. Prior is a brittle, brittle, boy.
  25. Well, what about these numbers, Dusty? Is there merit in these numbers? .289/.372/.556 21 HRs 42BB/98SO in 342 Triple A at bats Those would be the numbers of Michael Restovich who is not even on the 40 man roster anymore. Seems like he could platoon with Jacque in RF while the Murton/Pagan platoon could be kept in LF. Oh and I guess it is possible to not start Pierre occasionally moving Pagan to CF for a game here and there for the remainder of the season. Way too many K's. Dusty and Jim like guys who put the ball in play. I don't know if you were just pointing out fact as you see it, or if you were defending the mentality, but who cares about how much he k's? Fewer GIDP. His OBP is .083 above his avg, and that is a very good thing, especially considering the power he's shown. This is maddening.
