  1. If the Jays unload Halladay I've got to think that Marco Scuttaro becomes an option That would be nice.
  2. I know we have no one to replace him with at SS right now, but would he make a better 2B? Andres Blanco? No way do I want Blanco playing everyday. Just another hole in the lineup. Theriot will be at short the rest of the year no matter what. I was thinking more towards future years. Theriot would be much better defensively at second than at short. If there was a shortstop we could acquire, I'd be all for moving Theriot to second. Jack Wilson?
  3. Anyone know? I think it's aramis vs st louis. ](*,) No idea.
  4. Of course, attack Milton after that play. Can't go after the golden boy.
  5. Yeah for Ryan Theriot. We can't play Jake Fox at all, but this clown can play shortstop.
  6. Why have a shift where your guys is too deep to even throw out the hitter?
  7. Oh God, we are gonna target guys with mustaches.
  8. Soto is a valued commodity that the Cubs would like to keep around as long as possible. Hill is a necessary evil that is the only real catcher on the roster. I get this to an extent, but why the hell can't we at least play Fox until he burns us? We trot Soriano out to left everyday knowing he's going to hurt our defense.
  9. Why did Soto, who's younger than Hill, need days off? Yet Hill can play all these games in a row?
  10. Let's put some real pressure on the the Cards and get 2 of 3 in Philly.
  11. So, at some point, you are going to produce a different pre-season projection from Guzman that proves how ridiculous mine is? I've already shown a popular one that agreed with me. Isn't Guzman like every other prospect that came up and struggled at first, then got better? Carlos Quentin comes to mind. He was always very highly thought of coming up, some like him better than Z. The issue was always staying healthy. He's also like the hundreds of pitching prospects who had good arms but could never get healthy and ended up with nothing more than a cup of coffee. Right, but once they do get up and stay healthy they generally do ok. Look at Carpenter again. I can't speak to this as well as others could, I thikn Raisin really loved Guz, but he was an amazing prospect.

  13. Yes, I expect the Cardinals to regress as currently constituted. As I mentioned earlier, I'd take the Cubs over the Cardinals if I could be promised that both rosters stayed the same the rest of the season. The problems are: 1) The Cubs and Cardinals aren't the only two teams in the division. I'd take the Cubs over any one team in the field, but I'd take the field as a whole over the Cubs. 2) The Cardinals seem much more intent than the Cubs on improving at the deadline, which would balance out the projection. 3) Two games in hand is nothing to sneeze at. I guess that's true, but I cannot see anyway that the other teams really step in and win the division. The Brewers have out perfromed what they should do up to this point. The Astros could be a problem if they had any pitching other than Wandy and Roy. As for the two game lead that's one more good week away from being gone. There is a reason the Cards are trying a lot harder to improve their team than we are, they know they need to.
  14. So if we shouldn't expect huge upgrades from our guys, should we really expect the Cardinals to continue to perform at higher than expected levels? Or would it be more reasonable to think that they are going to regress? Hell even Pujols should regress a bit.
  15. Sure we can. I'd project a lot worse out of Franklin, but a lot more out of Motte. Lohse and Wellenmeyer look like they could be better, too. On offense, the Cardinals have a ton of replaceable black holes where they could gain quite a bit of ground. As a team, they've gotten .211 .284 .324 from 3b, and .214 .299 .340. Unlike the Cubs, who will be trotting Soriano out there no matter what, the Cardinals look like they are in good position to upgrade those holes. The only question for them is whether Pujols can keep it up. I think we've been lucky for a few years that they haven't been better, because Albert Pujols and 24 decent players gives you a competitive team with even a little bit of luck. If he keeps hitting like this, I see no reason they can't keep up their current pace. And if they do that, the Cubs will have to really turn it on to pass them. I can see where the Cards being able to address those holes, while we only have Soriano is an advantage to them. I think people have been burnt so many times by the Cubs that they are conditioned to expect the worst and vice versa the best for the Cardinals. Also per your take on Guzman, which I agree with, Carpenter???
  16. Don't you have to apply all this logic to the other teams too though? What are the odds Ryan Franklin remains this good? Joel Piniero? How about Casey McGhee? Craig Counsell? I'm not so sure 89 wins doesn't win this division by a few games.
  17. Trey Hillman will be what ultimately costs Moore his job.
  18. That's a good point, but that's basically what I was trying to say. I think that players in the 1900's and 1950's had just as much potential ability (considering our species has not evolved). But, my point is this: if you took Ted Williams in his prime exactly the way he was then (physically, and skill-wise) and sent him to the plate to face Pedro in his prime (exactly as he was), Williams wouldn't have a chance. How is a guy who's never seen a 100mph fastball or a nasty breaking pitch supposed to just go up there and start raking? I think it would require a great deal of practice and training before he would be effective. Ichiro. Great point. Even though Bob Feller who pitched in the American League is believed to have thrown the hardest ever in the big leagues. ](*,)
  19. That would be amazing. We always suck in Philly.
  20. The fact that you have to ask that question is sort of shocking. Yes. It is possible to be a good hitter that does not slug. I didn't say they would be a scrub. I just meant that they would not be considered legends like they are. I think 100+mph fastballs and nasty Carlos Marmol sliders make a little difference. I think that scouting has advanced a great deal over the years as well. Teams have a better understanding of how to pitch guys now that they have instant access to basically any split stat possible. Good question. What would be your answer? I'm getting the vibe that you feel there was a large difference in the game between 1900 and 1950, for example, but not between 1950 and 2000? So where does the line get drawn? I would say that Williams would have a better shot than most of those guys in today's game. I still don't think he'd be anywhere near a batting title though. Ted Williams would be Joe Mauer with more power in todays game. Keep in mind he would also be doing better weight training now than he ever did. Actually he would prolly be Pujols.
  21. Seriously can you imagine what kids said to him growing up? I've never heard anyone say his name, how do you pronounce it? Ni Jer. But, does it matter?
  22. Seriously can you imagine what kids said to him growing up?
  23. I cannot get over the fact that a black family named their child Nyjer.
  24. well it will be nice to blame the bullpen instead of the starting pitching and offense for not showing up. We are a long ways from worrying about what to do in the playoffs anyways.
