When talking about "statistical slamdunks" we are talking about the statistics that matter mainly to voters, not to us (Dawson's low OBP does trouble me personally). I have read that some voters have problems with Dawson's OBP, but that really isn't what we are talking about here. We are talking about the nebulous idea of "Hall of Fame stats" and those stats don't generally include rate stats unless you are talking about the ".300" hitter...but most of the lifetime .300 hitters are going to be guys with 3,000 hits or damn close to 3,000 anyways. Ripken had an OBP of just .340 and Young was at .342, which are hardly HOF-ish OBP numbers. But they each had 3,000 hits. So they punched their ticket. True, they played a more valuable position than Dawson, but Dawson's position doesn't (or shouldn't) effect him as much as other outfielders because of his excellence in the field.
