    They were the second best team in the NL by Pythagorean record. Remember, their rotation for a good half the year was Wood, Prior, Zambrano, Clement, Maddux, and all of them performed above average. LaTroy Hawkins was a fantastic reliever, awful closer. Many ABs were wasted by Ramon Martinez, Jose Macias, Rey Ordonez, Tom Goodwin, Paul Bako and Alex Gonzalez. Their only bad reliever for the season was Joe Borowski. It takes a special talent to manage that roster to the 6th best record in the NL.

    Mariano Rivera is a special case, considering he used to be frequently used for 4+ out saves.

As a matter of fact, I have been thinking about that idea, but from the data so far this year, no obvious cutoff point is jumping out at me here....... Team record by number of walks taken CUBS are 0-2 when they take 0 walks CUBS are 1-0 when they take 1 walks CUBS are 4-1 when they take 2 walks CUBS are 4-3 when they take 3 walks CUBS are 1-3 when they take 4 walks CUBS are 2-2 when they take 5 walks CUBS are 2-2 when they take 6 walks CUBS are 3-1 when they take 7 walks CUBS are 2-1 when they take 8 walks CUBS are 1-0 when they take 9 walks CUBS are 1-0 when they take 10 walks CUBS are 1-0 when they take 11 walks CUBS are 0-0 when they take 12 walks Looks like 5 walks is the median right now (19 games with less, 18 games with 5 or more). So, they are 12-6 when they draw at least 5 walks, and 10-9 when they don't.

    Good question. I don't think there's enough space in the Cubs clubhouse for all of them. In all seriousness seeing Jimmy in a Cubs uniform would be depressing. For everyone involved.

    I'm confused. The Cubs have only had 3 three game series sweeps (vs. Pit, @ Pit, vs. Ari) to my knowledge... Yes, and all three were series in which Zambrano did not pitch. There was only one other series in which that happened (@Stl I think). So, the Cubs have swept 3 of the 4 three-game series in which Zambrano didn't pitch (The Mets sweep was a 2-gamer in which Z did pitch).

    In the 2007 playoffs, the Rockies swept the Phillies, the D'backs swept the Cubs, and the Rockies swept the D'backs. Just over a month into the 2008 season, the Phillies swept the Rockies, the Cubs swept the D'backs, and the D'backs swept the Rockies.

    Fontenot has always been a solid hitter in the minors, and even when he started really slow this year, I was confident he'd catch fire eventually (and he did, raised his average a good 100 points in a week). I have no problems with Fontenot getting time. I would like to see Cedeno get more time, though, too. Theriot and DeRosa can be rotated in and out a bit more than they have been, to assure none of those 4 are wearing down by September (as Theriot and DeRosa largely did last year).

    Not how I expect the Cubs to score many runs this year, with the Johnson 2-R HR, and the manufactured runs that included a SB by Ramirez, a bunt single by Fukudome, and a swinging sacrifice bunt by Soto.

    Well, usually teams avoid PR with a pitcher because they don't want him to get injured so he can continue to pitch. I'm not sure that's what the Cubs see in Marquis, however.

    I don't say it often, but that was a great strategy by Lou to use Soriano first, since Arizona was likely walking whoever it was in that spot anyway.

    Pie should be seventh, but I have no issues beyond that. I really hope this lineup explodes today.

    Isn't Soriano technically a run-producing OF? I mean, if he's doing anything at the plate, it's producing runs. Or yes, Soto also produces runs, if Soriano has to be the leadoff hitter.

    What if Brett Favre decided he didn't want to be retired and showed interest in the Bears? Would he be worth a one-year flyer on if Grossman/Orton doesn't work out?

    When announcers on both teams are also getting into the act, it's bordering on absurd. And, I hate to say it, but if Felix Pie's and Reed Johnson's situations were switched (i.e. Johnson was the 23yo struggling to make it and Pie was the 31yo recently cut), Johnson would be getting the support.

    Pie needs patience. Usually when he puts the bat on the ball, he does OK for himself. Someone needs to show him a video of Corey Pattersons time with the Cubs and title it What Not to Do. Pie's strikeout today was due to patience. He's always been more of a Soriano type hitter than a Fukudome. He'll never be a big walker, but he'll be a really good hitter. At every level he's played, it takes him a couple of months to get used to the level, and then he absolutely torches it. He's still getting used to this level. Lou just needs to use him every day against righties. There's no reason not to, because Reed Johnson is awful vs. righties.

    Today's slice of Pie for CF (since Perry worked with him, April 21): Felix Pie: 6 starts, 29 PA, 8 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 BB, 7 K, .333/.413/.500/.913 Reed Johnson: 11 starts, 50 PA, 9H, 3 BB, 6K, .205/.320/.227/.547 We've now also reached the point where Pie has as many PA since working with Perry as after (well, 30 before, 29 after). Yes, he was really bad the first two weeks of the season. However, he's earned a shot to play against almost every righty the Cubs face. Lou is looking all over the place for a LH hitting outfielder when he's had one the whole time. EDIT: I missed Johnson's double from yesterday. Just wanted to be accurate.
