  1. give me Dunn hoops Dunn makes me feel funny on the inside
  2. it also almost happened in the NBA I believe when the Grizzlies moved to Memphis they were owned by FedEx and if i recall right there was a lot of talk of having FedEx on the jerseys and naming them the fedexers or something. It wasn't that but something like that. anyone else remember that or am i having one of my cough syrup induced hallucinations?
  3. marquis grissom?
  4. if hes grading on a curve then it does make sense for about 2/3 of teams to get C's. C is average
  5. my prayers have been answered thank you lord, and also JH
  6. the portland mercy killers or Portland potheads??? has a nice ring to it
  7. That's not really how it works. Well, he doesn't physically sell them, they get homeless people to do that, but newspapers are a business. The more inflammatory and sensationalized, the more people are going to want to buy it. A very small fraction of a newspaper's income actually comes from newspaper sales. It's all about the advertising now -- something I sadly am forced to deal with every day (I'm a newspaper editor). While circulation certainly affects ad revenues, the Trib's funds won't be determined by whether Phil Rogers writes ludicrous trade proposals or not. With a few exceptions, the job of a writer is to report the news and, in some instances, comment on it. It's an insult to say that reporters are there to inflame and sensationalize every aspect of the news just to nab a few extra subscribers. I guess it's true of a one certain windbag in this city, but for the most part, it's an awfully harmful and dangerous misconception. newspapers with circulations of 5 copies don't routinely sell ads for $50,000 a page. the more newspapers you sell, the more your ads are worth. edited to remove sarcasm I'm aware of that, and that's what I said. Ads are affected by circulation. But Phil's editor doesn't say to him, "Hey, our numbers are slipping, why don't you cook up some absurd article today and get more subscribers!" no... he knows to do that himself.
  8. at least Jockstrap has SOME power tho...
  9. is it just me or is tejada being overrated by some on this board, and now Hendry evidently... people post things talking about how we can expect 40 HR and 130 RBI from him, his line from last year: .302 .349 .515 .864 26 HR 98 RBI he has never hit 40 HR... career OPS of .815 he is a very good player indeed but not the world beater he is being made out to be by some
  10. after the Jockstrap signing :( :( :( how much money is left on the payroll assuming say 100-105 million? Still enough for another starting pitcher?? If so what starters are still available? I know Millwood is out there but anyone else? or is Hendry gonna add another bench player and call it an offseason? I think any one of: signing an innings eater starter trading for Huff or Floyd or Wilkerson trading for Miggy + signing a right handed platoon side = pretty good offseason... unfortunately it seems the first part of that equation does not seem too likely right now and the best bet seems like signing another starter... so is money there for doing that?
  11. Aubrey Huff? Cliff Floyd? Wilkerson? Nixon? Bradley?
  12. whats so great about tejada his numbers are really not much better than like milton Bradley for real look at em true he's a short stop and .300 avg and 25 HR is good for a SS and all that, but if we get tejada we still have john mabry starting in right field Another Right handed home run hitter is not really what this team needs
  13. why does everyone think that Bradley will not provide enough production as a right fielder. ) because hes never played in more than 141 games
  14. erin andrews gets my vote and it is an easy win
  15. Furcal loves Atlanta. Giles loves San Diego. Hendry has aggressively pursued Furcal. Hendry has not even remotely pursued Giles. What would have been the harm if Hendry aggresively pursued Giles? Was he afraid he might lure Giles away from San Diego? Oh, the horror. Or did he have some particular reason to not, at minimum, help drive up Giles price even more. The Giles offer from Toronto can't be used as an excuse in any way. It's another league, another country and a team that will probably never be much of a pennant threat as long as they share a division with the Yankees and Boston. . Perhaps it would have sent the wrong message to Furcal, that being: You're not our only #1 interest this offseason this combined with any possible info Hendry had about the unlikelihood of Giles actually signing in Chicago is surely what lead to the aggresive pursuit of Furcal In other words: not pursuing Giles made Furcal feel more wanted, thus maximizing the possibility of getting at least 1 of the two.... If he goes after both, maybe he gets neither... Just a theory i cooked up
  16. compare Huff and Burnitz's stats from last year .261 .321 .428 .749 22 HR .258 .322 .435 .757 24 HR guess which one is which... then think about which one plays better D True it was a down year for Huff but he is on a downword trend... Im not advocating Burnitz by any means, just trying to point out that Huff is not a very good option...
  17. u htink that one is bad wait til were paying 40 million a year for furcal and soriano of course lets all pray that thread is bogus
  18. someone please hurry up and debunk this ridiculous story... or confirm it without the 2 hundred mil contracts as has been said no way is that part of this story true
  19. how is Mench's D?? can he catch the ball? I hope so because his stats look like the right handed jeromy burnitz
  20. i must be the only one who likes this. the org. seems pretty clear in that they want cedeno to start. to be fair cedeno WAS starting until he got hurt. i dont mind neifi that much he can pick it pretty good in case of sucktitude from the rook or another injury or whatever may come. So yea come on guys you dont have to hate EVERYTHING
  21. the cards are world series contenders because they went there last year and returned much of the same team. They are also world series contenders because of their record. When the cubs wen to the playoffs in 2003 their record was really not that great. The cards' has been 2 years in a row now. Seems obvious to me...
  22. how about a three way with boston and San Diego? Like a sign and trade type thing with: San Diego: signs Giles and trades him to Boston Boston: send Manny to Cubs Cubs: send Patterson and bartosh to Padres hehe might have to come up with a slightly better package than that but what do you all think?
  23. I wouldn't mind Ivan. Im not that big of a barret fan. How about this for next year, going along with what dude was saying + acquiring an actual legit Lefty bat in the outfield, (Damon or Giles) If we could get Giles for Right Field: Furcal Furcal Cedeno Lee Giles Ramirez Jacque Jones/ Monroe for CF Murton Barret/ I-Rod To me that lineup is killer... as good a 3 4 5 as their is in the league, all while improving the D Maybe bat Murton 2nd if he stays good? This improves us both defensively (monstrously in the IF...) and offensively as well. Is this doable tho? I dont know, especially if improving the pen is a high priority We cant go into next year with both Walker and Nomar up the middle.
  24. No response to the boston / ny question? I'm disappointed. i edited it into a post a few back... BTW my plan includes keeping Neifi for a late inning defensive replacement and spot starter for Nomar, or Walker if you are in love with his 2.5 million option or whatever it is. This will be an improvement defensively, and also cheap by utilizing Cedeno. It also will not be any worse offensively than what we've had the majority of this year. Thennn improve the offense in the outfield. I should be GM i swear
