  1. That trade to Baltimore sending Sammy Sosa over for $16.5 million, Jerry Hairston Jr, David Crouthers and Mike Fontenot... is finally starting to pay some dividends. Here's to hoping Fontenot continues to rake.
  2. I've enjoyed watching Fontenot - for 5'8"/170# he can slap the ball around surprisingly well. He seems to have some speed, although his minors numbers don't really reflect it. I think he'd be more valuable to the Cubs if he could be counted on to swipe a bag now and then. Regarding DeRosa, I don't see him going anywhere this season since he can literally play every position and Lou's going to need that kind of versatility. Especially with Daryle Ward on the DL, DeRosa is the only backup corner infielder we really have. Izturis and Theriot can play 3d but who among them can backup Lee?
  3. Is there anyone surprised by this news? http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/357045,prior_042507.article Might be a better link here: http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/index.html
  4. The Cubs are going to hit - the real question is, is Zambrano going to pitch? The Ace of our staff is supposed to be the killing losing streaks and starting winning streaks and Z just hasn't done it. And so go the fortunes of the Cubs. I doubt these guys have the gas to win the Central but they'll play a lot better when Z starts pitching. Of course I'm just waiting for the other shoe to fall - "Zambrano reports tightness in his shoulder".
  5. What an accomplishment. Contract extensions for everybody.Boo for having cardinals of any sort in your sig As a Ball State student I wholeheartedly disagree! Me too, Ball State University Class of 1995 right here. Needing to get myself down to the Heorot sometime soon.
  6. Amen to that. The Dodgers wouldn't be stupid enough to make that deal but hey, I can dream.
  7. Thats precisely the reason that Prior still carries some trade legitimate value, most of baseball agrees with you. The others you mentioned however don't carry nearly as much trade value... Maddux is 40 years old. Wood is the Webster-definition of injury plagued. Marshall is young, inexperiend and he's been hit hard.
  8. To quote my good friend, Lee Corso, "not so fast my friend". They're only 1 game behind us right now. True enough but they actually look worse on paper then the Cubs do... which is a difficult task in and of itself. I have great confidence in my beloved Cubs to stave off last place and only lose 95-100 games.
  9. The Cubs and the Royals are about the only teams who have cashed in their 2006 chances of post-season play. Nevin was probably the best deal they could make at this point in the season - given the Cubs predispostion of holding on to their AAA stars until they've sufficiently failed at the MLB level so that their value is nil. A month ago we could have made a deal with Rich Hill to anchor the offer, now he isn't worth a case of sunflower seeds. Thank God for Pittsburgh - else we'd be a sure thing to finish dead last in the Central.
  10. Comcast Sports Net going to give details in a few minutes. - Paul Sullivan of the Tribune is reporting Wood will likely miss his Tuesday start in Florida because of a sore right shoulder.
  11. Because his OBP is south of .280 - speed only helps if you actually get to first. sarcasm I wondered... but I dont know you guys well enough yet. :D
  12. This is a finesse offense and there's absolutely no finesse without Lee. By the time Lee returns its going to be awful tough to catch up to the Cardinals, Reds, Astros and Brewers... Yes, I think the doomsayers are correct. Every Cub fans most hated four words are upon us again, "Wait til next year."
  13. Because his OBP is south of .280 - speed only helps if you actually get to first.
  14. That 04 outfield combined for about 100 HRs - I'd be stunned if the 06 outfield combined for 50. I understand that this is a different kind of team, but that's still a lot of offensive production tossed to the winds.
  15. I never suggested they should have kept all those guys around - I'm merely suggesting that their replacements aren't of the same offensive caliber.
  16. They need to teach him to draw a walk. Make him foul off a 1000 pitches in BP - if he puts in in play, have him run laps.
  17. Last I checked, Floyd was hitting about .186 and he absolutely can NOT hit left handed pitching. I don't think he's the answer. The Cubs need every day offense.
  18. Well, if you're not embarassed now you must be a hard man to shame. Everything has changed in 2 years - I also included Lee on the 2006 list even though he's missing 8-10 weeks with a broken wrist. Players get hurt but the potential of that 04 offense was infinitely better than what the Cubs started 06 with.
  19. Compare these lineups - how does Hendry get away with letting this happen and still get an extension? 2004 Lineup Corey Patterson Todd Walker Sammy Sosa Moises Alou Nomar Garciaparra Derrek Lee Aramis Rameriez Michael Barrett 2006 Lineup Juan Pierre Ronny Cedeno Todd Walker Derrek Lee Aramis Rameriez Michael Barrett Matt Murton Jaque Jones That 2004 lineup was murderers row... even with Lee, it seems pretty clear that this 2006 team isn't even a shade of what it once was. Sure players move on, retire, get injured.. but Hendry hasn't maintained this team, hasn't gotten replacements on par with those who have left.
  20. Not watching the games doesn't give you any unusual perspective - I don't see much of the games either because I'm usually looking away and wincing.
  21. They may as well bring all the AAA guys up and get them some at bats against major league pitching. This season is way over.
  22. They've lost 9 of their last 10 - the only glimmer of hope for this team is a MLB player strike.
  23. Just got home and turned on the Chubs - why am I not surprised...
  24. Guzman was getting hammered in AAA before they brought him up - this is another case of bringing up a prospect who simply isn't ready yet. I don't blame Guzman - I blame Wood and Prior who have both spent the majority of their careers on the DL.
  25. Stunning... Ramirez is beginning to pick up the pace.
