  1. It was only a matter of time for my favorite catcher turned outfielder turned pitching prospect on Earth. He does need to learn how to pitch, but he has a very gifted arm. I think worst case scenario, he could be a Francis Beltran type reliever. I love the converted catchers - Randy Wells too! Carlos just needs to work on that control (29 K, 21 BB, 4 HBP). Carlos' AA ERA is down to 3.31. Ron just corrected himself (DJAXX, did you e-mail Ron?)...Carlos hit 2 batters today. I do like Wells too. He has a very lively arm. I'd like to see him close full-time at AA (with Aardsma in Chicago).

  3. That's a lot of relievers for Florida. Kline, Julio and any of the TB guys make a pretty good back of the pen. Mota would definitely be available.
  4. I believe Duncan is a notch below Mazzone as a PC. I don't know if it's luck, but he's getting the job done. The Cubs run circles around them in pitching talent, but aren't getting nearly as much out of it.
  5. What the heck has happened to Jon Leicester?
  6. He's the top pitching prospect in the Cubs' system right now, imo. Agreed. Yep. Big fan of his. He'll have a productive ML career.
  7. Because Beltran is twice the player at half the age of Damon?
  8. They have to want the player back. Not everyone is Dontrelle. Odds the Cubs giving up another guy who will be this good are very small.
  9. Hosak, I don't see a fit for us directly in a 2-way deal. But here's a thought: despite getting Graffanino, I wonder if Boston and Texas would be open for a 3 way deal where Soriano goes to the Red Sox, Trot Nixon comes to the Cubs, and we send the Rangers 2 pitchers? Or maybe do the same deal with the Yankees and Rangers, and Hideki Matsui comes to Wrigley. I don't think Matsui is going anywhere, but it'd be nice. I think the Cubs would have to give up a ton in the 1st deal. My feeble attempt at a deal would be: Boston gets: Soriano and Wuertz or Wellemeyer Texas gets: Jerome Williams, Glendon Rusch, pitching prospect from Sox Cubs get: Trot Nixon The only problem I see with those 2 teams in the same deal is that both need relief help in the worst way. They are the 2 worst non-Tampa bullpens in the AL. I don't know that Wuertz or Rusch help them improve all that much and guess Dempster would be sought after by both.
  10. Pirates make out well if all they give up is Ward and Redman, and they don't pay much of any salary.
  11. 2 injuries? A few months? Whether he's had 40 injuries or 1, the fact is the dude has pitched 48 innings in the last 23-24 months. He's yet to got thru an entire minor league season uninjured. He's never thrown more than 94 innings in a season. Who knows if he will even pitch this year? He will be 24 at the end of this year, and still hasn't pitched above AA (outside of spring training). By the time he is completely recovered from this injury, he'll be 24. By the time his arm strength is where it needs to be he's 24.5. By the time the Cubs can reasonably expect his "bright major league future" to benefit them, he's 25. Nolasco has a much better shot at a ML future than Guzman. There are a lot less talented pitchers around than Nolasco. Guzman has the talent, but what's the point if he can't pitch? Holding out hope that Guzman will be healthy enough to one day reach his potential is similar to holding out hope that Brownlie will throw 95 again someday. It may happen, but nothing has been shown to suggest it will.
  12. Exactly. As I said in another thread. Pierre has a career .356 OBP and is hitting .354 since the final week in June. He's a career .300 hitter, so you can assume he had a down start to the year. He's also stealing at 79% success rate this year. I will admit he's not a huge upgrade over Hairston, and I wouldn't give up much for him.
  13. BTW, there are 2 threads about this deal. I got to thinking about the 3 Marlins trade threads in this forum and thought. If this trade goes thru, and they get Julio.....wouldn't that make Mota available? What about the Pierre rumors? I'm not the biggest Pierre fan, but he's not that bad. He has a career .356 OBP, and has started to hit again (.356 since June 25th). He's also about 80% in SB%. I would still like to add a corner OF bat......but would anyone do a trade of say: Pierre and Mota for Williams/Mitre and a minor league pitcher?
  14. Yeah, that would be pretty interesting. I think they could do this deal, add a ML ready starting pitcher (maybe by trading Mota?) and still compete for the Wild Card.
  15. I wonder if we don't tend to overrate our own guys and underrate those of other teams? Julio is having a reasonable year (WHIP of 1.20, and excellent K/BB), is young, and has a big arm. Marlins need a strong reliever. Equating Julio with Hawkins is silly, IMO. Penn is 20 years old,, and scouts with a much bigger arm than Marshall, IMO. Bigbie is pretty worthless, but he's athletic unlike Dubois. If Florida considered the analogy to be Dempster, Hill, and Murton, would that look so trivial? Good points all around. However, I believe Marshall is a better prospect than Hill at this point, simply based on age, experience, and control. I wouldn't do that trade, mainly because Lowell would have no position and Burnett would be a rental.
  16. One critical notion that's being lost here is that they need each other to perform as they have. If Ramirez is not a homerun threat because he pulls it back a little, then pitchers are less afraid of walking Lee. If Lee bats leadoff, then who is he going to drive in for an RBI? If Ramirez bats too far in back of Lee, who is he going to drive in? In any event, if a player changes his approach to simply bow out for another player, rather it be the triple crown a less substantial HR race, then he has cheated the integrity of the game and tainted any record that comes of it. Point taken. But I wish a sport that has all but endorsed steroid use (until this year) needs to stop bringing up crap about the "integrity of the game". Baseball has no integrity and every record of the last 20-25 years is tainted.
  17. I think that would put Mora in LF or CF, depending on who wins the battle between Matos and Surhoff. They have a dude named Palmeiro at 1B. That would be a great trade for the O's, even if Burnett isn't re-signed.
  18. I see what you guys are saying, but Mantle/Maris was for a HR record. The HR title was probably a fun battle for those 2, but they were going after 61, which could have been broken by both. Winfield and Mattingly were going for a simple batting title, you can't justify benching one over the other in that situation and showing favoritism. But the Lee/Ramirez situation would be different if it came down to that. A HR and RBI title is one thing, but when you add the chance of a Triple Crown, it becomes way more monumental than the other 2 situations. If the Cubs are out of it (don't think that will happen til about the final day or 2 if Lee and Ramirez are 1-2 in the HR/RBI races) and they are close, I don't think you bench Ramirez, but I think ARam would hesitate to swing for the fences, and I would bat Lee at leadoff to get him more ABs.
  19. Dopirak's error total is sickening right now. He's on pace for about 20 errors....AT FIRST BASE! If he finishes with 20 Es and an OPS under .700 like he is well under now, then he will most certainly have to drop way down. But I think you will see a resurgence from Dope as the 2nd half continues (assuming every game from here on out isn't rained out). His K rate has improved, and there's no way he's a .130 ish ISOP type of hitter. I'd say you can expect about .270-.280, 12-15 HRs, .220 ISOP the rest of the way from him.
  20. Both of Mrs. Patterson's kids are 1-2, with a single, steal and run each.
  21. I think he's on par with Rich Hill He's better than Hill. Yep. Similar stuff. If Hill had that type of control and kept the ball in the park the way Duke does....then you would have an argument. Of course, Hill would still be about 3-4 years older, so Duke would still be the better prospect. Down with Whitey!
  22. That's the point of the hit and run. He could have easily purposely pulled the ball thru that hole, knowing the hit and run was on.
  23. For the record, Duke is a very good prospect. Better than any arm the Cubs have in their system.
  24. Now he strikes out the guy with 4 career ABs! Should have done that the first time and kept it a 1-run game.
