    Depending on the weather, I see it being a higher scoring game. It's probably going to be close regardless of the weather. While the Raiders have a good pass defense, a lot of that is rushing a lot of guys to get pressure on the QB because outside of Asomugha, the secondary is fairly weak. I could see Manning throwing a lot of quick passes to prevent the blitz a chance to get to him and picking the Raiders apart. I thought Branch was pretty good?

    The high one is Boozer. I disagree, it's gotta be Korver. Or Rose, or Brewer, or Deng....oh yeah, and Noah.

    Why can't you start Hillis and Rice? I would start Maclin for sure. The other WR spot is a toss up.

    Raiders are a really tough matchup for the Colts. Raiders can run, Colts can't stop the run. Colts like to throw, Raiders have one of the best pass defenses. Raiders can't stop the run, doesn't matter because the Colts can't run (though they did last week). Plus, the Raiders have an opportunity to put some points up in the return game, as the Colts have never been great at stopping returners. I still think the Colts win, but it's going to be a close game either way.

    When all you have to do is come in and work a drive or two while down by a couple scores, that type of QB can flourish without much exposure. It's the 4 quarters worth of hits and full weeks of opposing defenses preparing for you that can be tough. Yeah, but it's hard to prepare for the speed of Webb or Newton. And it's hard to prepare for Newton's arm strength. It's definitely more difficult to play 4 good quarters than it is to move the ball on 2 drives vs. a laxed defense. But it will also help for Newton to have 6 months to prepare for game action than it was for Webb who didn't get any practice reps at QB until last week.

    Newton has some crazy upside though. He obviously has the arm and mobility. He just needs to be taught the QB position. And I actually don't think the learning curve is as bad as people make it out to be. Look at Joe Webb. He barely practiced at QB all year, and has put together a couple good drives in the last 2 weeks. Give Newton an entire offseason (if there is offseason football activities), camp, and a half season worth of reps, I don't think he will kill you at the QB position. I'd pick Newton over Mallett. Mallett is a statue. Get him out of the pocket and he's completely ineffective. He does have some upside too, as he has an elite arm also. Has shown he can make multiple reads, but also can lock in on a WR and try to make a tight throw. I actually think he would be fine doing that if he threw a little harder. He can do it, but I think he uses too much touch at times, if that makes any sense.

    The Jets also can't rush the passer without blitzing, which the Bears have beaten pretty badly.

    Of those 15 teams, only the Patriots, Colts, Steelers (2), Giants and Saints have rings. Only the Eagles and Seahawks have even been to the SB besides the Bears. It's hard to put the rest of those teams over the Bears, even with the same (or more) years of playoffs. So, at worst, the Bears are 8th in the NFL the last 7 years. But then when you consider the Eagles SB appearance was 7 years ago. The Seahawks are on their way to a 3rd straight 10 loss season. Even the Saints are only included if you count this year as them being in (haven't clinched yet), and they have 4 of 7 season at 500 or worse, including a 3-13.

    Now that they've had a successful 2010, sure, but Angelo's early years and recent run of mediocrity weighed heavily on the overall body of work. Just imagine how good they could be if they had the Gaines Adams trade back. Or if they drafted OL early at all, ever. And if they didn't bust on top 3 picks such as Gilbert, Iglesias, Okwo, and Bazuin. Granted, every team has bust picks but the Bears had no early picks combined w/ busts. There was a good 2 years where they added 0 young talent on a defense that was built on adding young talent.

    Chris Harris gets a one day repreive from criticism for that stop of Gehart last night. That was awesome. Harris had his best game of the year last night, if you take out the first drive, where he missed 2-3 tackles.

    No, D-line play is clearly, IMO. Idonije getting full time snaps. Peppers is much better than Ogunleye and Brown ever were. Melton, Toeina have stepped up. The safety play has been better, but the biggest factor in that has been Manning moving from FS to SS. Harris has helped in that he's "not Al Afalava or Kevin Payne". Major Wright hasn't played enough to have been that big of a factor.

    Urlacher is not a new face. And the last time Urlacher played for the Bears, the D was bad then too. It's not like they were bad last year because he wasn't there. He was there in 08 and they were bad. Peppers has made Idonije into a potential double-digit sack man. He has made the D into one of the top run stopping units. He has made the pass D respectable.

    I'd vote for Peppers, FYI. Defense was in the 20s last year, top 5 this year. Peppers is the only new face on the D.

    Who else is going to be in the running? While I think Peppers has played as well as anyone, I don't think 8 sacks is going to get him that many votes. I imagine Clay Matthews has already won the award. Maybe Polamalu or Shaun Phillips? My boy SP!

Polamalu was in the running, but will likely miss the rest of the season. I think missing 3 games takes him out. Clay Matthews was in the running, but he's now 2nd in sacks and won't win unless he has 2 big games and the Packers make the playoffs. Maybe John Abraham if you're looking for the best defensive player on one of the top teams.

    I think every call mentioned in this last page was a bad call. The helmet to helmet on Forte was weak. Technically, it was helmet-to-helmet contact on a defenseless player, but no whistle had blown. Players should play until the whistle. Cutler got hit with a helmet to chin on the INT. Early whistle on the Favre concussion should have been a fumble. Late hit on Cutler should not have been called as one guy hit him into another Viking, who got blocked into the spot where Cutler went after being hit. The one I will side with is the last Forte forward progress play. He never stopped moving his feet.

    Time to give Lovie props? I've been as critical as anyone of Coach Smith, but he now has led the team to 3 NFC north titles in the last 6 years. Obviously, that is better than either Minnesota or Green Bay over the same span. Two of the 3 came when the Bears were nowhere near favorites to do so. And now the 3 non-playoff seasons in between don't look so bad with no seasons below 7-9.
