  1. Pass-happy is good. The Bears had the 9th most rushing attempts in the league. Missing out on another year of Cutler in his prime was no blessing. yes. it is a passing league, what is everyone's fixation with going back to the days of the wing-t? People that keep preaching "it's a passing league" are just as bad as the people who want to run the ball more. You do whatever works best. It's only a passing league if it works. The Bears were a good running team, why take that away? The Bears gave up a ton of sacks the last 2 years, why continue to try and pass? The Bears having the 9th most rushing attempts is a good thing when Forte was 6th in the league in yards per carry for RBs with over 150 carries (2nd for RBs over 200 carries). The Bears having the 9th most passing attempts would be bad if they got sacked once every 7 passes like last year. The Bears don't magically win or lose based on whether they run or pass the ball a certain number of times.
  2. Agreed. But it was stupid 2 years ago when Lovie was a lameduck coach and brought in Martz. That was the time to get a long-term OC. That's why I think Tice should get the job. He's a stopgap that doesn't cause any drastic changes. He doesn't make it 6 different offenses in 7 years if another lame duck is brought in. If Lovie stays and an outside OC is brought in, my guess is that means Lovie is here for the long haul, unless that OC is also being earmarked for the HC position in a year.
  3. I don't agree with the statement in bold. Perhaps calling Ballard and Celek beasts was a bit much in a general sense, but both have dominated games at different times this season when the match-up dictated. To your point, having a really good WR or two creates that scenario in the first place (Cruz and Nicks; Jackson and Maclin). May be if we had WR's then Kellen Davis would be as productive as Ballard or Celek. But if we had a Gronkowski, Davis, Finley or even Aaron Hernandez, it would be even better, IMO. Nobody is disputing that having Gront, Davis or Finley would be ideal. But you can't tell me that Ballard and Celek are that much better than Kellen Davis. Davis is bigger than both and probably at least as fast. He just doesn't get used as much. Like jersey said, the need for a dynamic TE was overblown when Dez Clark was doing fine. And it's going to be done again because of the few that are out there.
  4. I'd love to see OKC/Bulls in the championship. I actually think it would garner better ratings than a lot better than people think too.
  5. Tice is from the Coryell tree also. Part of the issue with Martz was his play calling. Tice, I think, would know not to throw a screen on 1st and goal when you've run 3 times for 35 yards on the previous plays. Tice would know not to run a reverse to your slowest WR in the closing minutes of the game before the Superbowl.
  6. The only thing besides Tice that makes any sense is if the GB guy comes in as GM and brings the Packers QB coach in with him. Billick is a terrible idea. Just like the Martz hiring. He's an offensive has-been.
  7. I don't understand why it just wouldn't be Tice. Cutler didn't want Martz, but they brought him in. After last year, he begged for more protection, they didn't bring anyone in. He all but begged for a big WR, they got him Roy Williams. He has been quoted as saying "you can't keep changing offenses" and that may be exactly what happens. I don't know why they just can't stick with Tice. Stick with the current playbook and lingo, with some tweaks in protection and routes.. Get Cutler some weapons and then give this 1 more shot. If it fails next year, everyone's gone anyway. My main concern is not continuing to piss off the only talented QB this team has had in the last 70 years.
  8. Unfortunately chipping/helping the LT is certainly not the only thing you have to worry about. You have to worry about Chris Williams not falling apart and Carimi actually reaching his promise and Garza not showing his age and your mediocre RG situation not taking any step back. This is no time to pretend the line is settled. It's a 5-man group that needs constant attention. Hence, the word "IF"
  9. Considering the best offenses in the league today feature a dynamic TE(i.e. Finley, Graham, Gronkowski) yes, yes we are. GB won the Superbowl without Finley last year, and he only had 750ish yards this year. The Giants, Steelers and Eagles were also top 10 offenses without dynamic TEs. Not sure how you define "dynamic", but Celek and Ballard were both beasts this year. Miller less so, but he's steady/reliable and can hurt you if you vacate the short-middle because you are worried about the Wallace's and Brown's of the world.(see the Eagles game earlier this season). That said, I think Kelen Davis could be a useful target in the right offense. He's not going to line-up in the slot like Finley does, but he's a big target. That said, having a guy like Finley or Vernon Davis creates mismatches in the slot if you put a LB or S on them. They have to be covered in a zone or by a CB. Ballard had 38 catches for 600 yards this year. I don't think that's dynamic. Those are Greg Olsen numbers (with more catches for Olsen). All TEs are mismatches vs. a LB. No LB could stop 6-7 Davis if used properly. But still, that's icing on the cake. The cake is having WRs that can actually get open and make plays.
  10. No way. It's a 5 man grouping, Webb is still a mess and Garza is going to need to be replaced soon. Two spots might be fixed, but there are 3 that remain in flux. Yeah...Webb is a prayer every time the ball is snapped. I'd like someone in to challenge/threaten Webb's spot. But the OL will be fine if Webb is the only problem. Louis/Spencer should be fine at RG next year. Carimi good at RT. Williams was good at LG, and Edwin came in and was pretty solid after. C is a non-issue. Garza is OK, but he's mostly doubling on blocks anyway. If all you have to worry about is chipping/helping the LT, the OL is fine. Would like to not have to help the LT at all, but that's not realistic vs top pass rushers.

  12. But that offense was still 9th in points scored and 15th in total yardage when Cutler was healthy.
  13. Looks like he resigned. resigned an extension? No, that would be RE-signed
  14. Looks like he resigned.
  15. Don't sleep on Kendall Wright. He's only 5-10, but he's a good fit for the offense. Super fast and strong. Drawing a lot of Steve Smith (carolina) and Mike Wallace comparisons.
  16. Because it would be Cutler's 5th offense in the last 6 years (Shanahan to McDaniels, to Turner to Martz). Plus, if the Bears don't make the playoffs next year, there's a possibility that the whole staff gets fired. That would mean a 6th OC in 7 years for Cutler. Cutler didn't play under McDaniels. Yes, but I'm sure he had the playbook and was learning the offense.
  17. 1st round WRs. Justin Blackmon- top 10 pick (probably goes to wherever the Rams trade down to) Michael Floyd- top 20 Alshon Jeffrey- top 25 Kendall Wright- 1st round

  19. I don't know what's going to happen. I do know that Martz didn't want Hanie, that Angelo essentially forced Hanie on Martz, and that the 2011 season was lost the second Hanie stepped foot on the field. On the surface it looks to me that Jerry lost a power struggle and that Lovie will get one more chance. It makes plenty of sense to bring back Martz in that situation. But that assumes Lovie and Martz got along. There were reports each of the last 2 years that Lovie was not OK with the run/pass ratio early in the seasons. Playcalling has been an issue. Getting play calls in from him up in the booth has been an issue. who is in the quarterback's ear? i always thought martz was talking to him. i don't understand why there has to be a middle man between martz and cutler. Martz sends the play to Day (QB Coach) who sends it in to Cutler. Martz can't send directly to Cutler from the booth, I don't believe.

Getting play calls in from him up in the booth has been an issue. It took Lovie half a decade to wake up to the fact that this is a passing league, but I think he finally did, even if he doesn't like it. You don't win running the ball. But the Bears actually did run the ball. There are issues, but if the situation is that Jerry is out but Lovie is staying, I'm guessing it has a lot to do with Caleb Hanie, and Lovie will only have one year to make things right. It doesn't make sense to have Lovie find a new offensive coordinator in that situation. I'm figuring the "new" coordinator would be Tice anyway, with Shane Day calling the plays. Doesn't make sense to change the offense, but there's no reason he can't change to Tice as OC.
  21. Eh. Bell was alright. He fumbled 3 times, but he hadn't really carried the ball much in 3 years in the NFL. He wasn't used to the workload and fumbling issues are correctable. Barber is due 1.9Mil next year. That's money that can be used to upgrade various positions, or upgrade a position more.

  23. Scouting, I actually don't have a problem with. The Bears have done a decent job with late round picks, where scouting really comes into play. Melton was a RB/DE in college and led the league in sacks by DTs this year. Lance Louis was a college TE. Knox, Moore, etc. Eh, scouting is pretty huge in the first 2-3 rounds. Outside of the top 5, it takes scouting more than worldwide consensus to decide who is worthy. Yeah, maybe. And part of the problem with the early picks has been the scouting failures with guys like Dan Bazuin and Garrett Wolfe going higher than most thought they should. And guys like Jarron Gilbert being a failure. But I think the Bears can scout just fine. I think the problem is they think they are too good, and don't go with the consensus scouting choices.

  25. Sure, there's room for improvement, but in a salary cap league the Bears did well under Angelo. A lot of other guys have done a lot worse with the same resources that he had. On the bright side, the new guy doesn't have to acquire a franchise QB (the toughest thing for personel people to do). But we still don't know that there will be a new guy running things. I'm not sure what you consider "doing well". The Bears have had 1 playoff season out of the last 5. And the times they have been decent, Lovie has gotten significantly higher production out of his team that the talent level would indicate. Last year's OL debocle was enough to fire any GM. This year's handling of the FA period.
