    I'm 50/50. On one hand, I think Trestman feels anyone can run this offense and Emery won't spend 100Mil if he thinks he can adequately fill the QB position for much cheaper, with a QB handpicked by him and the coach he handpicked. On the other hand, I think they know Cutler is extremely talented and know that handpicked QB will not be ready to run the offense as good as Jay in 2014. It's going to be tough to franchise him at 20mil or whatever it will be for next season. That's a lot of money for a guy that may or may not be in your long term plans. But Jay's not going to accept a below market contract or a 1-year deal. And without Jay, you basically go into the draft planning on taking a QB and a QB only in the 1st round (Mettenberger or Carr, don't think Manziel or Boyd are of interest and none will be there mid-2nd). Emery has shown the last 2 offseasons that he doesn't like to go into the draft desperate at any 1 position. If I had to bet money on it today, the Bears franchise Cutler and draft a QB in the first 3 rounds. Jay is either a lameduck QB or playing for this longterm deal again, with a future option already in place.

    I'm going to go big. 2 new OF (starter/platoon and backup) New starting middle IF. (Castro or Barney traded) New backup C 2 new SPs (Shark traded, 1 FA) 2 new RPs New backup IF 9 new players.

    While I agree with your overall point, football does not work this way. Exactly. They gotta win and win big. Lovie won but is out because he didn't win big. Firing Lovie was settling on being an offensive football team. And they don't have several years because they could be starting all over next year. Not in position to take a Luck or RG3. So whoever they take is going to be a step back from Jay. Basically, sign Jay longterm and the coach/GM are tied to him. Draft a QB and let Jay walk, they are tied to the rookie. If they get rid of Cutler it's tantamount to starting from square one, again. I know football is shorter term by nature but these big time shakeups, year after year, just shows they don't have a real idea how to build long term success like the top tier teams do. That's what bothers me. Well the "they", Emery has only been around 2 years. The coach for 1. So you can't possibly know if they know how to build long-term success.

    Is this the prevailing thought up there? I just can't fathom this being a common idea and this is coming from a generally pretty smart guy. I'm sure it is. And honestly, I can understand someone thinking like that. Its wrong. But I understand, especially with the loss still fresh. Jay makes stupid throws, but he makes a lot more amazing throws. The problem is. ...if not Jay, who? McCown isn't a real option. Draft may be, but starting a rookie QB who's probably the 4th or 5th best at his position (even if you take a QB in the 1st) is not ideal. I wish they fired Lovie a year earlier. This team could be really good if the offense was established last year. Now they face the real possibility of losing all the great progress from this year with a new QB next year.

    The Lions have a 2 game lead now with the tiebreaker, it's pretty much over unless the Bears can finish 6-2. Wildcard in play if SF wins Wildcard very much in play. Even with GB, who the Bears have the tiebreaker over. Even if Carolina loses, and they still have NE, NO twice, and the Jets, who are good sometimes. The Bears can take out Arizona and Philly on their own.
