  1. Maybe if Ed Wade was still their GM.
  2. Ughh. If Konerko is going to be getting on average @12MM a season for the next five years, I can't imagine what Lee is going to be asking for.
  3. They should. They're better than the Cubs and doing a whole lot more to be better in 2006. The end of the Phillips era got really ugly in Queens, but they've been improving since bottoming out in 2002/2003, due to a lot of nonperforming contracts. I think there's a good chance they go into the season as a strong favorite for the NL East, and possibly the favorite for the NL. The offseason is still young, and there's a long way to go before next October, but do you think that their starting pitching behind Pedro is good enough to get it done in the playoffs? I also have some concerns as to who they will have pitching the 7th and 8th innings?
  4. 1) Pie +10 +10 2) Pawelek +10 +10 3) Hill +10 +7 4) Harvey +10 +5 5) Cedeno +10 +7 6) Patterson +10 +5 7) Marshall +10 +8 8) Dopirak +10 +8 9) Pinto 10) Nolasco +10 +6 156
  5. This from a snippet in a NY Post article this morning.... Drats. I thought this guy could have been a nice alternative option to Pierre and could be had for less than a king's ransom. Bummer, eh, UK?
  6. Beinfest is a shrewd GM. He plucked Willis away from us. I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt on this deal. Sanchez is going to be good. Beckett's amazing, but he hasn't been injury free himself either.
  7. You think so, eh? Yeah, it is a good deal for Boston, but it's a good deal for Florida as well. Behind Lester, Sanchez could arguably be BOS's best pitching prospect. I was able to watch Annibel Sanchez this year in Wilmington. If he stays healthy, he has a chance to be special. You may be contracting that statement in a couple of years. His fastball has a lot of movement, and he locates it pretty well. He's got a nice curve as well and a developing change-up.
  8. BA's already said that 2006 is shaping up to be a weak draft class, so as of right now I'm not too upset about losing a 2nd rounder. Cubs better nail their 1st rounder though.
  9. Why is it frustrating? Why should it matter? A, B, C...the Cubs weren't going to offer Nomar arbitration anyway, so it's all a moot point. If the Cubs offered Nomar arbitration he'd most likely jump on it in a heartbeat, and the Cubs certainly aren't going to risk arbitration and pay Nomar another $8MM or whatever he earned last season.
  10. If not, no problem, we can always trade him back to SF.
  11. Probably not. The Phillies are looking for a #1 or #2 starter and aren't going to dump Abreu for prospects. Unless the Cubs want to talk about moving Wood (no trade clause), Zambrano, or Prior, I think they'll have a hard time getting PHL to listen. PHL, like the Cubs, wants to try to make their team better. The Phillies want to win as much as the Cubs do in 2006.
  12. Nope. Not true. According to a recent quote from Sabean recently, SF offered a multiyear deal to retain him prior to him declaring UFA. But, it could have been only two years.
  13. I can't wait to see how much we're going to over pay another middle relief guy...
  14. How about spending what it takes just to keep him from going to STL? If Giles ends up in STL, we might as well crown STL the 2006 division champs. If he goes outside the division, fine. But Hendry can't let Giles go to STL. Would the Cubs be better off if they had Abreu in right, Pierre or another good bat like Ichiro in in CF and Furcal at SS then the Cards if they just added Giles? Everyday player wise? I'd rather have Giles than Abreu. Simply from the standpoint that Giles will only cost $$, but Abreu would cost players and money. Personally, I'm a little disenchanted with Abreu's 2nd half slide from last season. Pierre, Ichiro, and Abreu would all be nice, but how much of a team and organizational depth will we have left after trading players to get all of those guys? I'd rather see the Cubs spend some of the Furcal money to get Giles, and go with Cedeno at SS. It'll never happen though with Dusty around.
  15. How about spending what it takes just to keep him from going to STL? If Giles ends up in STL, we might as well crown STL the 2006 division champs. If he goes outside the division, fine. But Hendry can't let Giles go to STL.
  16. But can he catch the ball?
  17. In a new release over on ESPN regarding two former Cubs... And this is interesting... Finally, an excerpt from a recent Ken Rosenthal article...
  18. two words for you: Scott Kazmir Any GM that can get absolutely fleeced like that doesn't deserve the job. Hendry is a moran, but I'd still rather have him than Phillips (i'm sure you were just kidding about that :D ). I may be wrong but i dont think that Phillips was the one who traded Kazmir, wasnt it his replacement? true. it was Phillips' assitant that did that after Phillips was canned. maybe i should have said "phillip's regime." he's still a moran though. Jim Duquette was the GM at the time, but it was widely rumored that the owners son - Jeff Wilpon, made that deal in a last ditch effort to try and make the playoffs two years ago. Duquette was a figurehead in NY his last year as GM before Minaya got there.
  19. I like what the Cubs get in this deal. The Phillies compensation looks a bit light though. The Cubs would have to part with more than CPatt and Hill. Philly is looking for a #1 or #2 starter in return for Abreu. Something that the Cubs won't be able to give Philly. Besides, I don't think CF is a dire need for PHL. They can go with a platoon of Jason Michaels and Lofton (should they choose to resign him).
  20. May be a foolish question, but would the Cubs have the $ to take on Abreu's salary? If they give Furcal $9-10MM, possibly then take on Pierre @$6MM, would they have $15MM to give Abreu? (he's owed $31MM for the next two years correct?). Realizing that Hendry has @$30MM to spend, would that leave him with enough $ to shore up the other area's?
  21. I'm pretty sure he costs us a 2nd round pick. Because the Cubs finished in the bottom 15 right? So if the Cubs sign Giles or Burnett does that cost them a 3rd round pick or do the Padres/Fish get a supplimental pick in the 1st or 2nd round? Yes. The Cubs would then lost their 3rd rounder if they were to sign Giles or Burnett. (Surely, both of those teams will offer arbitration to both of those players.) Where is gets tricky is on who would get the 2nd and who would get the 3rd rounder. That all would depend on who is ranked higher (through the Elias sports bureau rankings) between Furcal, Giles or Burnett. I would assume that all three players will be Type A FA's. If all three are type A FA's then both teams getting our 2nd and 3rd rounders would also be entitled to receive 1st round Sandwich picks.
  22. I'm pretty sure he costs us a 2nd round pick. Yep. ATL would most definitely offer Furcal arbitration, which would cost the Cubs 2nd rounder (since our first rounder is protected).
  23. Depends on what else the Cubs would have to surrender to get him.
  24. I believe it's tonight at 12:01am - or I guess tommorrow then.
  25. I agree. I definitely think Hendry will try to pursue other options. I just think Bradley would be a perfect target and would make the perfect project to test Dusty's abilities as someone who can manage a clubhouse. IMO Bakers abilities to manage a clubhouse are to play the veterans. He can't control the players like Bonds, Kent or Bradley. Hmmn. You serious cuse? I thought Baker did a half-way decent job in SF from keeping Bonds and Kent from killing each other. Are there any other volatile personalities on the Cubs at the present time that could potentially send Bradley off ? I'm not aware of any. I think the Cubs would be a good situation for Bradley considering their star player and manager both share the same race. It would appear that it would make for a comfortable environment for him.
