  1. Don't forget Pie is 20 years old and expected to be playing regularly in the majors at 21. I don't know what you consider a "can't miss" prospect (or if there is such a player), but he's the closest this organization has had in a long, long time. Yep, pretty much since Patterson was rated the #1 prospect in baseball. ;) However, we have had a couple of pitchers come up since then that were pretty much "can't miss". For example, there was the kid named Prior... thats exactly what makes the can't miss label so useless. if a player who is labeled can't miss like prior lives up to the hype while another cant miss like patterson doesn't (if he wasnt a can't miss why was he labeled the #1 prospect in baseball?), the label of can't miss seems to be a hindsight evaluation without much value.
  2. I guess you didn't read that quoteless story very carefully and took the assumptions you made as verifiable fact. Was there a quote in that story from Hendry saying, "I will never trade Pie or Hill for anyone, so any GM out there that wants them shouldn't bother asking"? No. Did the author of the aritcle say that Hendry wouldn't trade Pie or Hill period, that they are completely untouchable? No. All the author wrote was that Hendry had been turning trades away that were asking for Pie. Did you ever consider that maybe who was being offered wasn't good enough to warrant trading away Pie? actually it was pie, hill or murton. regardless, hendry has said in the past that pie was an untouchable and i dont see his performance this year as changing that. not much in the realm baseball trades is verifiable fact anyway and this board is no exception. that said, i would take odds on pie being a cub for a long time to come as hendry does not have a history of trading his top farm prospects.
  3. there is no such thing as a cant miss imo. his .903 ops in AA at 20 years old along with his gold glove fielding however is indicative of very good (if not great) things to come if he can improve his plate discipline. how many ABs did he have last year? 240. not alot i know but he is very young for aa and put up some great #'s for his 1st time around. with pie, ep, marshall, gahllager, marmol, pinto & nolasco (unless they start at AAA), the double a team looks to be a very exciting one imo.

  5. i think that either floyd or wilkerson will be the cubs right fielder next year. maybe a walker/nolasco/novoa/dopirak package would be enough to snag heilman & floyd. if the cubs can sign furcal, wilkerson can play cf instead of right. maybe cp, jvb, marmol & mitre for wilkerson?
  6. I agree with you although I still don't quite understand including Hill in this "untouchable" list. Pie isn't going anywhere, period. he did lead all the minors in k's last year i believe (or maybe it was all lefties?). since he found his control he has dominated and he does have great stuff. he is 1 pitch away from being a very good starter in the majors imo. if he can work on a decent cutter or change, i can see him being a solid addition to the starting staff for years to come.
  7. i guess people didnt read the blurb about hendry turning away when other clubs inquire about pie or hill. they aint going anywhere and certainly not both for abreu. a silly trade proposal imo and one that hendry wouldnt consider for a second.
  8. they have blasko & petrik (sp?) listed as lefties when both are rhp.
  9. nice job on the pic. maybe pierre or furcal will be next since you already have theirs done!
  10. A few fans? Cub fans have been suffering since 1908. Many have died without ever knowing the feeling of winning it all, unless they are Bear fans like me. If he doesn't care, then it's high time to replace him with someone who does. A 100m payroll even tells me that The Trib cares about winning. im talking about the fans who thinks he sucks because he doesnt sign or trade for the players that they like. do you really think that we fans care more about the cubs winning than hendry does? for us baseball is a diversion, for him it is his livelyhood.
  11. you might be right but wasnt jason bay traded like 5 times before he hit it big with the pirates? who knows what dubois could do if he gets 500 ab's in the majors?
  12. Ah...Goony...you remind me once again why you're my hero. To everyone preaching that we wait and see how the off season unfolds before crucifying Hendry and company, that's the exact same mantra that's been bandied the last few seasons. I bought in last year, so any criticism I levy is a result of waiting for the non-existant difference making moves last winter. what does it matter anyway? if the cubs win it will not be because of us and if they lose it will not be because of us. i love the cubs as much as anyone but it's only a game (and one in which all of us are only spectators who have no real after effects of them winning or losing). for hendry it his his lifes work and his career. i'm sure hendry & his staff dont care one bit about a few fans think about him and his moves and neither would i if i were in his position.
  13. Amazing how fast (a little over two years) someone can go from God and Genius (after stealing Aram, Lofton and Lee) to incompetent buffoon. :? before 2005 kenny williams was the worst gm in baseball and now he's a wonderboy. of course if the sox tank next year he'll be aweful again.
  14. since they will both be in the pen next year if the cubs sign eyre, what does it matter who is better between the 2?
  15. Yes, NY, Hendry was helped along in those trades, but that doesn't change the fact that these guys helped us land our best offensive players. He also traded Willis for Alf or Clement. You can take your pick of which. I love how whenever someone brings up previous bad deals by Hendry, this is always one that comes up. In retrospect, the Marlins probably got the better end of the deal to this point, but how do you know Willis will amount to much over the course of his career just because he had a couple of good seasons so far. Clement was a big part of that 2003 team that ended up 5 outs from the World Series, and without him there is no way the Cubs make it as far as they did. When that trade was made, most people were elated and thought that the Cubs totally got the better end of the deal because they got two major leaguers for a couple of minor leaguers. who actually made the trade for clement-hendry or MacPhail? MacPhail was the gm & hendry was the vp of player personnel when the trade occured.
  16. eyre is a lefty. i thought heilman was also but i was mistaken. he would be a good addition to the cubs pen if they can get him for walker.
  17. if the cubs get a solid rf like abreu, wilkerson or floyd would a hairston/greenburg platoon be enough to man cf?
  18. i wouldnt mind heilman for walker but according to espn 1000 this morning the cubs have a long term deal on the table for scott eyre so i dont know what they would od with him unless they want heilman to start.
  19. I'm still holding out for UW-Whitewater alum Bob Wickman. Yeah, I know he sucks, but *points to avatar*. wickman closes for the indians and last year he had a 2.47 era with 45 saves. i wouldnt say that sucks.
  20. i remember how upset some people were when the cubs didnt sign mike hampton several years ago. it turned out to be the best thing that could have happened. the same thing with beltran last year. i would much rather see wilkerson or floyd (or even abreu or ichiro if they can be gotten for a reasonable package) than to see the cubs way overpay for giles. the guy has a great obp but he is 35 and his power is suspect. the cubs should be able to get a solid cf & rf for less than the price of giles alone (much less if he's going to get 12+ mil a year).
  21. tim kirchen (sp?) on espn 1000 this morning said that the cubs have a long term deal on the table for scott eyre and are very interested in signing him.
  22. other than maybe a lefty like eyre, i hope the cubs stick with the pen they have. ohman, wuretz, jvb, novoa, williamson & dempster are all solid pitchers imo. no need to spend big bucks on fa's when you have guys in the system who can do the job.
  23. One word Jerry Hairston Jr. He filled in nicely on the DL for Sosa IMO. Injuries to key players did play a factor as much as you'd like to bury you head in the sand on this fact. The injuries and the thin bench expose was the Cubs undoing. Simple and also in the past. We move on. the braves had alot of injuries but they had a great season because they went to their minors & played a bunch of talented rookies instead of forcing bench players into starting roles. cedeno, murton & dubois were obviously ready to contribute last year earlier in the season but were not given a chance. baker also seems to mess up players by not putting them in the roles they are most suited for (rusch, dempster, hawkins, walker, hollandsworth to name a few). look at how the braves used remlinger compared to the cubs and look at the results. granted mike was often injured with the cubs but when he was healthy he still was used to try to get lefties out and they crushed him the majority of the time.
