So hypothetically, the Cubs sweep the Brewers, the Marlins win 2 of 3 against the Pirates, and then it all comes down to a 1 inning game where the Mets need to score at least 1 to tie and 2 to win. But in that scenario, we survive until Monday! That's almost as good as making the playoffs, right???

Fun with arbitrary endpoints - The Cubs are 6-13 since the start of the Arizona series on 9/7. If they could have just gone 8-11 over that same period, they would be headed into Milwaukee with a lead.

If only some of the bad Cubs teams of the past few years were this good at tanking late season games...

To be fair, the Cubs are tied with San Diego in the category and they are under .500

I get that, but we have seen this team win games by a lot, and then consistently lose them by a little. Maybe that's all that bad luck in how runs are being sequenced, but I have a hard time not thinking this particular bad bullpen has led to a lot more close losses than close wins.

He is a solid #2 or 3. This year was almost certainly an outlier.

Counterpoint: Good starting pitching is going to keep games close and terrible bullpen is going to lose a lot of those games.

I have no idea how Swanson is still hitting .247 because it seems like he keeps going a week between hits. Oh by the way, he would be the 8th best hitter in the Braves lineup.

Only a 1 run lead, so the Marlins can't lose by that score. I expect the them to score 2 in the 9th.

Eh. If they can limp into Milwaukee still tied, they have a shot. Maybe getting out of Atlanta, and with the Cubs fan energy in Milwaukee, they can bounce back and put one more mini run together. I know I'm probably being over-optimistic, as all signs point to this being over, but I'm not completely ruling them out yet.

As hopeless as this all feels, all it takes is a Mets win tonight and then Cubs still have a reasonable shot. If the Marlins win, then it becomes highly unlikely.
