  1. Because he was coming off a career year that he could never possibly measure up to again, if you recall.
  2. Small sample size. We all know the man has prodigous power. He's got five 30+ HR seasons and two with 45 HR. Yeah. Let's just ignore the 206 AB's he has this year. He's had a horrible two months. This isn't a bad two weeks we're looking at. His OPS does suck, but he has 10 HR this season after the one today, I believe.
  3. As has been mentioned, he was finally starting to come around when they decided to give him a few days off, making the decision even more incomprehensible.
  4. Hill showing the value of improved fielding over Barrett.
  5. You are correct that DeRosa has been better than Barrett this season, but not lately. In June: Barrett: .261/.370/.522 DeRosa: .316/.325/.395 Barrett has been heating up, and when you look at their last few seasons, there is no question that Barrett is the better hitter. I'd put him 5th behind Aramis and move Murton and Floyd (neither of whom have been producing or hitting for power) down in the lineup. This is more or less what I expect Lou to do, though Barrett may hit behind Floyd on days when he is in the lineup. As far as Jones goes, I agree that he should be benched, but I thought that the first line of your post indicated that you meant the posted lineup was what you expected Lou to use, and I was just wondering why you thought Lou would change his mind and bench Jones.
  6. I'd expect Jones to continue to get playing time (for no apparent reason) and I have to ask why you expect Barrett to be moved down to the 8th spot?
  7. I like this one the best...though with Murton leading off and Soriano batting 5th. I'm also getting sick to death of Michael Barrett. I wish we had a catcher that could play defense and hit just a little bit. He costs us way too many games defensively and stumbling around the bases like a drunken sailor. At this point I'd just as soon Hll catch everyday. Z seems to like him. A catcher who could play his position well would be nice, but playing the AAA catcher over a guy who has consistently been a very strong hitting catcher over the last three years is ridiculous. Even at defensive positions like catcher, offense is more important than defense, and Barrett's bat is finally starting to pick up again.
  8. I would be OK with letting Barrett get most of his off days when Zambrano is pitching, but if you look at the larger sample size posted earlier, you can see that Zambrano has had plenty of success pitching to Barrett over the course of his career. Catcher's ERA is a pretty meaningless stat anyway.
  9. Also, if someone was trying to rig the vote, wouldn't all of the fraudulent votes have come at once?
  10. As was pointed out earlier, the number of votes in this poll is around the same, if not lower than, the number of votes in the other polls up now. If someone were rigging it, there would be an unusually high number of votes. EDIT: As a side note, does anyone remember anything about NUN? When was the last time he posted?
  11. Should we stop using a quality closer because of his second blown save of the season? Do you feel comfortable with Dempster as closer? I feel more comfortable with Dempster closing than with just about any other reliever in the pen. An argument could be made for Wuertz, but Dempster has been solid overall.
  12. Oddly, it was his decision not to use Eyre, the blower of leads, that led to the collapse yesterday. Many of the losses rest on Lou's inability to recognize that certain pitchers should not be on the mound with the game on the line. This was not one of those losses. I think Dempster faced about 4 lefties out of 5 batters to start the god awful eighth. Of course, Eyre's been terrible against lefties this year. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Eyre's line against lefties is worse than his line against righties at this point. I don't care who is batting, you can't send Eyre up in that situation. Lou made the right call, and Dempster blew it. That kind of thing is bound to happen occasionally. It would probably happen less often if Lou used the right relievers in the right situations more often.
  13. Oddly, it was his decision not to use Eyre, the blower of leads, that led to the collapse yesterday. Many of the losses rest on Lou's inability to recognize that certain pitchers should not be on the mound with the game on the line. This was not one of those losses.
  14. Because they have nothing else right now but Theriot, who's on a cold streak that makes Izturis look good.
  15. With Ohman pitching? Heh, Wuertz. Much better.
  16. Best part was that he said he was waiting for it. He clearly was expecting to throw out a Cubs pitcher today, no doubt that he was biased. Has an umpire ever been disciplined for gross misconduct on the field? I'd say there is pretty much no way that anything is done to compensate the Cubs here.
  17. Too bad the Cards already won. If we can win today, that would be revenge enough.
  18. I wanted to see the Cubs score a run. At this rate, neither may happen.
  19. When was the last time an ump was actually held responsible for gross misconduct on the playing field? There's no way he will be punished in any way at all.
