  1. There's not real evidence to back up the idea of Raffy juicing. From 1988 - 1994, he slowly and annually ('92 his only real hiccup) raised his AB's, Walks, HR's, RBI's, OBP, and AVG and kept his K rate steady. He peaked when most players do, 5-7 years into the bigs. He simply learned how to play well and did it for over 15 years. His biggest weakness is his inability to find a winning team to play on. Raffy was improving before Jose was around, and continued long after he left. He never had a dramatic size shift, and his increases and decreases in production were right along where age and experience would have it. If he juiced, he's brilliant for perfectly timing it.
  2. He only played 111 Games in 1994. Does anyone know why? I sure as heck don't get it.
  3. Skip Bayless is awful. Usually hate to jump on the pile, but this is an exception. There's credible, hardworking journalists, TV personalities, and radio talk show hosts that struggle to find jobs, yet this blowhard gets work consistently. I can understand how Joe Morgan and Joe Carter get work, having at least played the game, but what has Bayless ever done to make you listen more. Like "The Real World," I can just watch Skip and think to myself "Damn, I must be doing something right." Palmeiro is in. First Ballot. If he plays another year, Only Mays and Aaron will be with him in the 600 HR/3,000 Hits club. You cannot reasonably argue against that greatness. I love the Hawk, but staying healthy is part of the "greatness." Sure, another 5 years would have gotten him in, but that the way it goes. Happens pretty often. Could it be happening to Scott Rolen? Anyway, I want Hawk in, like Vince, because I loved him. He made the Cubs watchable (along with Ryno) in the late 80's before the days of Gracie.
  4. This is a very, very good question. When it comes to starting pitching, I think the comparison is dead on. '04 Cards (playoffs) - Morris, Williams, Suppan, Marquis '05 Sox - Burhle, Garland, Garcia, Hernandez/Contreras The biggest difference is the #1 starter. The Sox have one, Cards didn't last postseason. Suppan was their best starter, and Woody Williams wan't too bad, either. Morris, Williams, and Marquis were all very similiar 6 IP, 4 ER + guys last fall. I don't see Garland (no track record), Garcia, El Duque or Contreras (all inconsistent), doing much different than that. If the sox add a big gun with AJ Burnett or another starter coming over, that makes the comparison void. The offenses aren't even close, and the pitching difference will be greater. If you're looking to say the '05 Sox will collapse like the '04 Cards did, which is possible if the Sox get the postseason jitters, then you'd have to expect injuries, which is really what killed the Cards season last October (Morris, Carpenter, Rolen, etc) .
