  1. I actually heard that quite a bit, and I could certainly see that happening. That would be the only way to get rid of him...
  2. 2006 will make 5 seasons out of 12 where a MacPhail run team has lost 90+ games. Say what you will about the Tribune's desire to make money above all else, but at what point do they start looking in a whole new direction? Isn't now as good a time as any? The record speaks for itself. Then add on the complete and total embarassment that is 2006 and the fact that MacPhail has extended the man primarily responsible for creating this mess (Hendry). Is it possible the Tribune will step in and clear everyone out, including Andy? I say no, but I guess part of me still hopes. EDIT: this probably should be in transactions, oops. No way! The Cubs don't think in terms of win and losses. Since MacPhail has taken over the Cubs have become wildly successful in terms of $$$$! Baseball is a business, so why fire somebody that has been successfull in making money. MacPhail will stay unless he wants to step down.
  3. I can see Pie, Hill and Veal would get Cabrera...
  4. I wouldn't say that. With Z, Lee, ARAM, and Barrett it's not a bad core of a team at all. I was in Girardi corner for manager, but the more I read about him and his ways the more I'd like someone else.
  5. has zito been quoting as having said something along those lines? No, but I don't see him wanting to come here. If you had comparable offers from the Dodgers, Yankees, Angels, or the Cubs who would you choose? The only way the Cubs get Zito is to overpay greatly for him. Which won't happen. In other words, you're expressing your opinion, but telling others it isn't worth discussing as if it were fact. It's not for you to tell others what is or is not worth discussing. It not worth me discussing. You can discuss your little heart out for all I care... Let me edit this so I don't come across as a a-hole. It's just that every year we sit here and dream about getting the big name FA and every year we come away with a Jaque Jones instead...
  6. That's if there is a Aramis next year....
  7. Or course he had to say it twice because he's so witty!
  8. I said the same thing about Guzman in this thread. I hope the Cubs use him next year in long relief and spot start him...
  9. Andrew ( Chicago): Who will be the Cubs manager next year? SportsNation Gary Gillette: (2:57 PM ET ) Not guaranteed, but I think there's a reasonably good chance it's Girardi. I think he's history in Florida unless they go to the NLCS and, if he's willing to negotiate a buyout, he could quickly become the leading contender for the Flubs' job. Goose (Chicago): Flubs, that hurts. Do you see the Northsiders spending a ton of money this offseason to keep their fans? I have a feeling they will not sell out in record time like they did this year unless some serious changes are made. SportsNation Gary Gillette: (3:02 PM ET ) I think the Flubs will open their checkbook again, but they've got to get a lot smarter or it won't have the right effect.
  10. As I said every player's different. It's not my theory either. I'm just saying what Todd Walker has said. Maybe Todd Walker is the only baseball player who feels this way, I don't know.
  11. If it were harder, then we'd probably see marked differences in performance when players go from one to the other. I think you do see that. Look at the stats of Edgar Renteria where he had 30 errors with Boston and only 11 so far this year. AROD in NY has how many errors at 3rd base. You can't tell me the fans getting on him isn't pressure? What City other then NY would boo AROD as much as they have? Cory Patterson feeling the heat last year? Yeah, David Ortiz sure went in the toilet after going from small-market, no-pressure Minnesota to the media frenzy in Boston. Every players different. Some thrive off it and some don't.

  13. Are you freaking kidding? After his poor start of the season, demotion to the bullpen, and demotion to AAA, every start is a pressure situation. Pressure is an individual phenomenon not a team or group one. When I am golfing and am lining up a 4 foot put for par, with no money on the line, no crowd, and just my friends watching is one of the biggest pressure situation I face on a weekly basis. I don't agree with you. Even if he failed this time around he would've gotten serveral more shots at the bigs because of his stats in the minors. Todd Walker once said it's easy to play for smaller market teams that draw no fans because there is no pressure. Playing for Boston and NY is far more pressure, where you are expected to excel from day 1 and expected to win. I don't know how to respond other than asking you about when you feel pressure. Is it becuase of the situation or becuase of what others say about the situation? BTW- I would think that pitching in Wrigley in front of a packed house, for a manager and GM who haven't exactly "had his back" is a pretty big pressure situation. How much pressure do you think Anibel Sanchez had last night when he was pitching in front of 30,000 empty seats? I don't play in the major leagues? So I don't know what kind of pressure players feel. I'm assuming it's a hellva alot harder to play in Boston, NY then in Tampa Bay or KC.

  16. I say NO to Zito because he will command too much money and IMO not worth it for a 3.5era pitcher. I would love to have Schmidt but only for a 2 year deal which is unlikely. I would like to see Lilly to be honest. Z, Hill, Lilly, Guzman, Prior/Mateo/Marmol/Marshall Yeah, it's not the best rotation but it might work out. zito has a career 3.54 era in the AMERICAN LEAGUE. his career era+ is 129, quite worthy of whatever contract he is offered. He's going to command about 15 million per year. No way in the world is he worth that. He's not an "elite" pitcher. Plus, he's not going to come to Chicago. It's not even worth discussing. you know this for a fact, or are you just speculating? he's 28, has 101 big league wins, a 129 era+ and not an "elite" pitcher? Yes. Zito will get 15 a year. Boston will need to spend to get themselves out of the Beckett trade fiasco, and the Yankees simply don't care what they spend as long as they get the player they want. It will be a massive bidding war. He'll get a 15 a year. If Burnett makes 11 a year what the hell is Zito worth. Too many big markets are after him...

I would like to see Lilly to be honest. Z, Hill, Lilly, Guzman, Prior/Mateo/Marmol/Marshall Yeah, it's not the best rotation but it might work out. Even if you have to tack on a 3rd year for Schimdt I'd do it. Sadly I think Schmidt has already booked his first class ticket to Seattle. He would not be a bad move at all. Injury-wise I think he will stay healthy simply because it appears he is relying on his fastball more and phsyically he appears in top shape schmidt would be a better choice than zito. hendry should do what it takes, because if you don't throw at least one top of the rotation guy in here, it looks very bad going into next year. Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Guzman?, Marshall? 0_o Lilly is NOT a number two, maybe as a number four i'll take him. That is makings of a brutal year. You need another impact vet in that rotation. If not FA then make a trade...

  21. I wouldn't count on Mark Prior to be in the rotation next year.
  22. Agreed. And I'd like to just hand one to Angel Guzman. Tell him before the season he's got it, and he can't lose it no matter how badly he pitches... he'll be running out there every five days. I bet he could surprise a few people under those circumstances. I honestly don't think Guzman can stay healthy enough for the rotation right now. I would use him in long relief next year or spot starter.
  23. I am loving Hill, but if he can be the cheap centerpiece to net us a proven player like that, I'd do it in a heartbeat. It really wouldn't hurt to shop around to teams like the Reds/Yanks/Mets/Marlins/Red Sox/etc.. I'd certainly do that trade too. As a matter of fact, I think you can only find one group of people that wouldn't do that trade. The Marlins. You would have to throw in Pie to get that deal done.
  24. The only thing I still worry about Hill is how does he pitch under pressure? I mean it's easy to pitch for a last place team that is playing for nothing. But then again, he may never have to worry about playing for something, as long as he pitches for the Cubs...
