  1. Hill is far, far, far from untouchable. He's had a nice run in the 2nd half, but if the Yanks want him and others for AROD. Take'em!
  2. Perhaps because he's old, it might be his last chance to manager, the Yankees job is unavailable, SF is too far and the Cubs spend a lot of money on payroll and employ lots of veterans. Lots of managers think payroll and veterans are the key to winning. Aren't they? It hasn't helped us the past 3 seasons, has it? TALENT and payroll, maybe. I was just editing my post. I agree Talent wins.

  4. Can we hold his decision making ability against him, since he chose to go there? :D He chose Tampa because he and his family live there. Not because it was an ideal winning situation. So can we assume he's not coming to Chicago because of its ideal winning situation? I think he's coming here because he thinks he can win. Why else would he come here?
  5. I don't know, there's a pretty big difference between 3/24 and 5/75, and those are two of the more frequent deals I've heard for each guy. Both aren't worth their contracts but I'd rather over spend for Soriano then Pierre. Ain't that the truth!! Bring in Sweet Lou and bring in Soriano in CF!! Sounds like a upgrade from Dusty and Pierre to me! :o

  7. I don't believe that. If they were at odds LR would've taken the 3 year deal that Detroit offered him last year... Not necessarily. Detroit was not picked by anyone to do as well as they have this year, and the Cubs for all of their faults were picked to at least contend in their division this last year. Rothschild could have been looking at it from the perspective of, if the Cubs succeed, Dusty stays and he retains his job (I also thinks he has a good relationship with his pitchers) if they fail, he would have been the most likely to get a shot as interim manager if Dusty was fired. That makes no sense. Turn down 3 year contract for a one year contract with a manager you are at odds with? Huh?

  9. Them chickens ain't hatched yet. Fair enough. I still don't beleive Piniella would be so eager to come unless he had some sort of behind closed doors reassurance that the Cubs were significantly raising the payroll. And I will continue to beleive the Cubs are going to be really aggressive this off-season. Piniella's hiring seals it for me. I agree. Lou would not come here otherwise, espically with the NY job opening next year...
  10. I've assumed Piniella was going to be the manager for a while now, so it's kind of hard to react one way or the other. My timetable for serious thought on this team is once Hendry starts making player decisions. It will be pretty annoying to read about how much of a difference Piniella made if they do win next year, but if they win, I'll live with that annoyance. It seems pretty clear that Hendry believes Detroit will win the WS, going with the crotchety old manager who won't accept failure approach. I really doubt that's why Hendry hired Piniella. I believe (just guessing) that if the TRIB does raise salary (115mil) the upper management as well as Hendry prolly want someone that has experience. Maybe so, but it sure does fit his style. I'd be surprised if there was a press conference and Leyland's name doesn't figure prominently. I wouldn't be shocked...

  12. And how much better do you think Bochy is then Piniella? What the hell has Bochy done in 12 years on the Padres?
  13. WSCR say it's a 3 year 9 million dollar deal. Not a bad deal.

    Injuries

I thought he had nice definition in his shoulders and arms, but his abs could have used a little more work if you ask me. :-k Baseball players don't have to be models to be in game shape. I agree - In fact I think that most are too "in" shape. The zero percent body fat doesn't work well in baseball.
  15. He apparantly tried to use Kazmir on short rest to win one last game to get to the meaningless goal of 70 wins one year. That's a sign of a manager with misplaced priorities. I think you can go back and review any manager and find one or two incidences of abuse. Let's not nitpick everything to death here.
  16. I will go on record and agree with this right now. Way to cover your butt. The comments of some on this great board are starting to diminish the quality it once had. Too many people jumping on the opinions of the outspoken. I think if the Cubs win in '07, it will be 95% due to the players and 5% to the manager, no matter who they hire!! I totally agree. I stated in one post that I doubt that there would be a swing of more than 3 games no matter whether they hired Piniella, Bochy, Girardi, or Brenley. Whether we want to admit it or not, these guys are all competent enough to win with the right players. I agree. The amount of crying on this board has reached a epic-like proportion. Any of the 4 above mentioned managers I'd would be fine with. Piniella is just as proven as Bochy and Brenley so what's the problem here?
  17. I'm not sure how hiring say, Joe Girardi, would be a sign that the Cubs don't want to win now. I'm also not willing to give Hendry any credit for hiring someone to "win now" as that's as much an effort to save his own job as anything else. Furthermore, it could potentially make a bad situation worse. When the GM is desparate to win now that's when the worst trades tend to transpire. Garland for Karchner for example. Let me ask you -- If your the owner of the Cubs and (by all indications) are about to spend 115 mil. wouldn't you want to bring in a season vet manager opposed to a 2nd year manager?
  18. I think Lou is a notch or two above Dusty.
  19. Well at this point why not! Might as well try something different...Let's face it the past 4 years the Cubs have become a bunch of cry babies.
  20. Count me in as being happy about this! Looks like the Cubs want to win now, which means the rumor about raising the payroll looks to be true... We can be the Tigers of 2007! \:D/
  21. This never gets old. Pretty damn funny! http://youtube.com/watch?v=b4cnE8Td-Co
  22. Yes on both, I'm keen for these two. The more I learn about Matsuzaka, the more I want him. He's younger than Hill for crying out loud. Matsuzaka I'd love but JD Drew I wouldn't at all. Get Soriano and Matsuzaka and I'll be a very happy Cub fan! At least until the season starts...
  23. He doesn't like players loafing but what manager does? Besides Dusty I mean...Plus, this RAM loafing is a bit played out. They guy puts up the numbers and that's all that counts.
  24. The article is a bit pointless. I'm sure there will be qualified candidates next year if Lou leaves.
  25. Thanks that eases my mind a bit.
