  1. That'd be a good trade for the Pirates. Morgan's been ok for you guys, but he has absolutely zero power, and you need some badly. Hanrahan was pretty damn decent out of the pen last year too for the Nats. Don't know what's up with him this year however. But it's not like you're going to miss Burnett anyway. I'd almost trade Morgan and Burnett just for Milledge. Hanrahan seems to have been a victim of lousy defense. We'll miss Burnett, but not that much. The reality is, the only one in this trade who has any star potential is Milledge, and he's coming our way.
  2. The team you play tonight will look a bit different than the team you played last night. http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/pbc/default.aspx
  3. Granted, 17 over all and 13 in a row is an impressive, go to the Indy Indians site and look at the video of some of the [expletive] those guys were swinging at. I could have had 10 strikeouts against those guys. Well, OK, no I couldn't. But, you get the idea.
  4. Ha! Seems everyone else is following our model! :-)
  5. Hey, we're only 5 games out. How'd that happen?
  6. The Pirates took Tony Sanchez and it was labeled as a money saving pick. And, it was, but it wasn't about being cheap. It was about allocation of funds. The general thinking is that a #4 pick would command about $4.5 mil. The Pirates brain trust came to the conclusion that no one who'd be left @ #4 would be worth the money. Sp, they agreed ahead of time w/ Tony Sanchez. That left $2 mil. Here's what they hope to do with that money: http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/pbc/archive/2009/06/26/recruiting-news-von-rosenberg-cain-in-for-visit.aspx The general thinking is, more or less, these 2 guys and Sanchez will help the major league club more than some guy better than Sanchez and two guys who would take slot money at those rounds. It's going to be interesting to see if it works. They tried the same basic strategy last year - they passed on signing Scheppers and used the money to sign Quenton Miller and Robbie Grossman (also high school stars committed to universities.) There were others who signed who's names I can't remember, and others who didn't. There's still a long way to go, but at least it's looking a bit brighter these days.
  7. Duke, Ohlendorf, and who knows. Could be Vasquez, depending on how he does tomorrow night. Duke will leave after the 7th having only given up one run. The rest is a crap shoot.
  8. Snell down, Virgil Vazqeuz up. Vazquez will pitch tomorrow in what was Karsten's spot. Morton, who was supposed to pitch tomorrow, will be pushed back to Sunday (Snell's spot.) Morton has a hamstring problem. If it's still tight, look for Gorzo to come up and take the start. If Gorzo comes up, Morton either goes down or to the DL.
  9. Not sure yet. I'd like to see him pitch someplace other than Coors. His numbers seem to indicate that he's turned some sort of corner this year. And, let's face it. He's replacing Jeff Karstens in our rotation. How bad can he be ?
  10. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09172/978977-63.stm Lack of hustle gets one cut.
  11. Doesn't get any lower than that. Steven Pearce is coming up. The statements say it's more about bringing Pearce up than cutting Monroe. But, let's face it. Monroe's main job was as a Pinch Hitter, and he was 0-14 in that role. Yawn.
  12. Please stop bringing the Aram trade up> It's like picking at a 6 year old scab at this point. Let it heal, please. Sucks about Roberto Clemente, Jake. Yeah. But, he'd be retired by now anyway.

  14. Two pro-trade opinions in the local papers. FWIW http://www.timesonline.com/articles/2009/06/04/sports/pirates/doc4a289fa00536e118828105.txt http://community.post-gazette.com/blogs/bobsmizik/archive/2009/06/04/mclouth-deal-bold-gamble-worth-taking.aspx
  15. That's a silly reason to not like it. What don't you get? The Pirates season was thrown away the minute it started. Seriously they weren't going to do anything. And McClouth wasn't the guy who was going to determine if they ever returned to contender status. The Pirates season ended the moment Bonds and Bonilla left town. Too bad the Pirates dont have any money. Imagine them with Aramis Ramirez, Bay, Nady, McClouth, Freddy Sanchez, LaRoche, and Ryan Doumit. The NL Central could have spent a lot of years looking up at them As I'm sure Jake will tell you, the Pirates have money. They just won't spend it. Actually, they are spending money these days. Just not on the major league roster yet. We spent $10 million on the draft last year, going above slot in many rounds. Also, about $5 million (i think) on a new academy in the D.R. They say they'll spend when we're ready to make the next step. I'll believe that when I see it.
  16. We certainly didn't miss Nate today. My not getting it post was frustration. I'm still frustrated. I'd have liked to have seen Nate & Cutch playing side by side. Jeff Passan seems to think higher of Gorgys & Locke that you guys do. Morton was a throw in. Locke is left handed, throws hard and has control problems (Sound familiar?) We weren't going anyplace this year. We had an outside shot of a winning record, but weren't going to to win the division. So, on one hand, I understand it. It's just that Andy LaRoche was starting to hit, as was Moss. Get Doumit back, and with what Freddy is doing, a line up of Freddy, Nate, Andy & Brian 2-6 was sounding good. Adam heats up around now, that's 2-7, or move Nate up to 1, or plug Cutch in at 1 (Morgan has gone cold. ). With what our starting pitching is doing....... sigh
  17. Quick lunchtime thought: The three guys the Pirates got could go on to hall of fame careers and I still wouldn't like this trade. We basically threw this season away. I don't get it.
  18. Not saying I agree with this, but this is what management is thinking. The minors in the organziation are lacking, to the point that we can't win a championship. So, it's either buy like the Yankees, or restock. This trade is about restocking. When will we win? Hopefully year after next. I need to work. I'll try to post more later.
  19. Starting this afternoon, prolly in CF. (Might be Morgan in CF, Cutch in LF)
  20. The article in the link says that Rule 5 picks can only have 30 days of Rehad assignment. I'm no sure if that includes his DL time or not.
