  2. Maybe he is heading for better times, but I am more inclined to believe that the Cubs' bats were simply horrible last night, as they have been prone to be many times this year. But, maybe that's not the case. I don't really know. From what I read today, he was decidedly better last night. More strikes, more getting ahead of the batter.
  3. Well, he must be lobbing pitches up to the plate so swinging would seem to be appropriate. He's allowed 31.9% LD percentage so far and 35% of his fly balls given up have been for home runs (which translates to teams batting .384 off of him and him giving up 3.26 HR/9 so far). His K/BB ratio is actually pretty decent but he's still getting pounded. Nope. 95MPH over the middle of the plate. The first three innings you'll be shaking your heads. The second time through the lineup, he'll start using his curve and missing, and everyone will sit on the fastball. Want to make a gentlemen's bet that he earns at least a quality start tonight for the Buccos? Not sure if you made a remark about this a few pages back, but yeah I win. 6 IP 2 ER, 5 H I did, around when he came out of the game. I didn't get to see as much of it as I'd have liked, but the numbers look good. He's got good stuff, but he needs to learn to control it. I guess last night he did a good job. If he can get his act together, we'll win more games.

  6. Charlie Morton is starting. We're not letting the children watch. It's going to be that ugly. Last year, he had one putrid (to be kind) start against you guys where he gave up 10 runs and didn't record an out in the second inning. Other that that, he had a high 3 ERA. This year, all of his starts are like the one he had against you guys, so perhaps today he's going to go the distance with a shutout.
  7. While they swept us at home, we took 2 of 3 from them last week in beertown.
  8. TV or Radio ? Len & Bob = TV Pat & Ron = radio Any bend in the playing field is a "Nooks and crannies" for Bob. Also, any triangular shape in the outfield is a "Bermuda Triangle" Also, he can go on for hours on how winning leads to team chemistry or how team chemistry leads to winning. FWIW, Northside Notch is the local name for the Nook.
  9. Didn't say I was happy with it, per se. Just that anyone expecting better returns as far as major league pitching is delusional, with the exception of Bay. Wasn't doing that at all. BBB said we didn't trade for pitching, only bats. I listed the pitching traded for. Grabow was a free agent to be, Gorzo was a malcontent. Get something for Grabow, rid the club of a guy who didn't want to be there. What were Gorzo's numbers the past two years? In one sense, we really didn't give up much in that trade. They weren't going to be foolish enough to pay Grabow $3.5m/year.
  10. First, I'm assuming you mean Freddy Sanchez, and not Freddie Garcia. The only one on that list who could be worthy of bringing a front line starter was Jason Bay. Bryan Morris was supposed to be that guy. He wasn't (Although he's off to a good start this year). Who's giving up young, #1 or #2 major league pitchers at the trade deadline for a non potential hall of famer ?) Nady brought three back of the rotation guys. Ohlendorf could be a #3. This is in addition to Tabata, who's raking @ AAA right now. (Yeah, it's only a month.) Plus, the minors have been stocked with a lot of pitching. Enough that a low percentage success rate will still yield a decent staff.
  11. Why do you say this ? Maybe I spoke out of turn. Is someone else to blame for the Pirates starting rotation? Over simplification of the problem. And, a rather myopic view. Possibly so. However, the appearance to me is that they keep trading for bats and ignore the rotation. That is absolutely not true. Nady brought Karstens, Ohlendorf & DCutch. Bay brought Bryan Morris (High A) McClouth brought Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke. Freddy brought Tim Alderson Jack & Snell brought three A level pitchers, two of whom are AA bound soon (All starters). Grabow & Gorzo brought two pitchers who promptly ripped up their shoulders upon arrival. Donny Veal, rule V draftee, is a starter @ AAA right now. In addition, look at our draft the last 2 years. They may not be the best, but at least it's an attempt. It's kind of a throw enough [expletive] against the wall strategy and see what sticks. The only holdovers in the rotation are Duke & Mahlom.

  14. Just saw this thread... He's out of the hospital. He has a concussion. Nothing broken. Kind of dodged a bullet. On the 15 day DL. No idea when he's going to be back. Depends on the symptoms. He's going to travel with the team, and get tested every day. I'm surprised they don't send him back to Pittsburgh.
  15. Most of my optimism for the season evaporated over the past three days. As bad as yesterday was, one needs to look at that whole series, and it gets worse (yes, it can actually do that.) Fortunately, we fly into Houston today. (I probably just jinxed them, didn't I.)
  16. It took even a bigger hit last night. I'm going to have to look at the numbers on games Charlie Morton doesn't pitch. Last night was 6 runs, taken out without recording an out in the 2nd. Duke winning 4-3 and Morton losing 8-1 counts as a 1-1 record, with a -6 run differential. When we lose, we really do it. When we win, we eke it out. No, this is not sustainable. But, I'll enjoy it while I can. Been too little to enjoy the past couple of years.
  17. you do realize that the Cubs are next to last in the NL in runs scored? Yet we would be pretty good if our bullpen wasnt so damn awful? The bullpen is one place Neil Huntington spent a lot of effort overhauling this year. And, with the exception of Hayden Penn (Since DFA'd), it has been good enough.

  19. I went back a couple of pages, interesting read. As we now know, Hunting let Capps go for nothing. The only two holdovers in our Penn right now are Hanrahan and Meek. Hanrahan put up some good numbers for us the last two or three months of the season, Meek is young. The good money went to Dotel, who's the closer. How he does is a crap shoot. 1.something million to Donnelly seems like good money. Those 4 are the back end of the pen. Not bad. The other three guys (Carasco, Lopex & Traschner) are what they are. I think the Pirates desire to keep Grabow was not that high, so getting anything for him was a bonus. The experiment that was Hayden Penn was put out of it's misery yesterday. Quite honestly, it should never have gotten out of spring training. He was DFA'd with a 30+ ERA. No, that's not a typo. (He was kept around while Hanrahan was on the DL. There were better choices.) Save for Penn, many consider our bullpen improved. It will be interesting to see how it goes.
