  1. Duke, LaRoche, Young. No surprises, really. I just thought Duke & LaRoche would have stuck around to the non-tender deadline, but neither was going to get tendered. Young was a decent bat off the bench, but no glove, and, when given regular at bats two years ago, really didn't do anything with them. In other news, the sun came up this morning.
  2. Naturally, when something like this happens, there are going to be reactions like yours. There's also going to be a ton written in the blogoshpere. Here's some of it. Some of the pieces have link's to Dejan's twitter account which is the only place he talks about it. (He usually takes off from the end of the season until the winter meetings.) IF you're only going to read one of them, read the first. http://www.thisisgettingold.net/2010/11/defending-dejan.html http://whygavs.com/201011161461/pittsburgh-pirates/november-2010/small-town-bias-and-awards-voting.html http://www.bucsdugout.com/2010/11/16/1816882/kovacevics-inclusion-of-neil-walker-jose-tabata-enriched-discussion http://pittsburgh.sbnation.com/pittsburgh-pirates/2010/11/16/1817002/dejan-kovacevic-rookie-of-the-year-jason-heyward-neil-walker-jose-tabata
  3. He does. A lot of his early season moves got panned, notably some weird outfield alignments, Some questionable pickups, no physical performed on Aki, then no followup to see if he was keeping in shape, Keeping Charlie Morton in the rotation was a front office decision. There's more, this is just what popped into my head without having to think much about it.
  4. Although it's not apparent from the above quote, there was speculation that Huntington's job was not safe.
  5. Going around the 'Burgh
  6. Do you take another 3B and move one to first? Or do you grab one of the pitchers? Good question. The one to move to first would be Alvarez, who many thing we should move to first irrespective of our pick. I think part of it depends on how Rendon looks this year and how he comes through his physicals. If he fully recovers, I think we'll take him. If not, it depends on how recovered he is, Vs. the pitchers available.
  7. This is all moot. We win. With a Seattle victory last night, we clinched the first pick in June's draft.
  8. It was the FOURTH inning and his team was losing. He got himself not only into scoring position, but 90 feet away from home plate. Could have scored on a passed ball, wild pitch, base hit, etc. You can't expect to chip into a lead without scoring runs. yeah, but down so many runs, you don't need guys getting CS, you need runners on base. What if he had gotten thrown out? I guess the notion was more stupid than anything. You realize they weren't holding him on ?
  9. 20-something % of our wins are against the cubs.
  10. I do think it was interesting that the original article on espn (that Neyer quotes) didn't say that all those former All-Stars that aren't on the roster, with almost no exception, aren't worth their current salaries. The Pirates still suck, but does anyone think the people they've let go in the last few years have been bad moves? Eventually you have to forgive them for trading Ramirez, etc, right? Re the Ramirez trade - the original intent was to trade Benson, who was making about the same money and had worn out his welcome. Supposedly there was a deal in place, but then he got hurt. The Ramirez thing was thrown together rather quickly, and the results speak for themselves. The Nady trade looked very good tonight. This is going to be an interesting off season for us, especially with the words of intent to spend. There's no firm number. If we want to get better, we need to go outside the organization - there's really no one @ AAA ready to come up (Although recently aquired John Bowrker looks like he'll be considered for RF next year.) What we need is pitching. But, then who doesn't. We're not going to get Cliff Lee. I wonder if we can trade for a pitcher near the end of his arbitration clock.
  11. That's just it - what do you believe. Nyer has an interesting take: http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/4933/parsing-pittsburghs-ps-and-ls
  12. FWIW http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10235/1082040-63.stm
  13. Basically yeah. There's a verbal agreement, and the the team faxes something to the MLB office. The fax is what has to be sent. Three years ago we had the whole [expletive] w/ Boras saying Alvarez Agreed after midnight. It lead to a whole long drawn out pissing match. I learned more about the process than I ever cared to know through this whole process.
  14. In some sense, you did.
  15. We have people in Pittsburgh who have never seen a winning season of baseball, or were two young to remember it. This includes our second baseman, who was 6 last time we had a winning season. Sorry, meant to add more.... Our fan base seems to be losing the younger set. Most of the fans I know are my age and not much younger. (i'm on the older end of things on this board, I'd say.) Especially with how well the Pens & Steelers have been playing. Many have no interest in baseball. This, of course, has little to do with Fontenot. Except many fans still cry over the Freddy trade.
  16. You're basically criticizing yourself for not being That Guy that you always are. well, at least i beat you to it. Yes, because if I'm known for anything here it's for living by the stupid "everything bad of course will happen to the Cubs" mantra. That's actually the only reason I came here to read this thread. You guys let me down. This, from the guy who roots for baseballs worst team, 18 losing years running.
  17. While I think you're being kind to Ed Creech, overall you're correct here. Additionally, as they were dismantling what they inherited, there was a concerted effort to get talent at different levels. Our trade deadline deals, including this one, are no different. We've promoted a lot of guys this year (Tabata, Walker, Alvarez) and our talent in the upper minors is really lacking (wasn't that great before these promotions.) We need players at this level.
  18. While we won the series, I'd hardly call it embarrassing. And, if you look at our play coming into Chicago, I think the word relief comes into play.
  19. Fundamentals are learned when you're 13, and should be perfected by time you reach the majors. Guys making millions of $$ are expected to know fundamentals.
