  1. I didn't necessarily mean on payments owed, but more on the relative lack of revenue generating luxury boxes, smaller overall capacity, higher costs for upkeep due to its age, etc...
  2. Nobody is calling out the Cub's fan base or Chicago over this...you'll find ignorance anywhere people gather whether the place be large or small. Nobody can claim immunity. Props to Jones for his professional handling of the situation.
  3. I'm going to guess that Wrigley Field itself has plays a significant role in that.
  4. Defense is not worthless...but by the time you make the majors, most regular starters can field their positions at least competently. An .850 OPS 2B who's slightly below average defensively is worth more net runs to his team than a golf glove 2B who hits in the .650-700 OPS range. Above average defense is nice, but hitting and pitching are more important.
  5. After reading the threads on this board the last two days, that choice of words kinda gave me a chuckle...but I don't argue that the Cubs have some very good fans. The reason why I read this board so often is because the quality of discussion is generally very good. I also noticed that the Cubs owners were one of the ones spending below their predicted amount based on revenue...bottom ten if I remember right. Now whether that can be interpreted as a general stinginess on their part, or more optimistically as a predictor that they might be expanding payroll next year (a return to the mean so to speak), is a matter of speculation. Regardless, I thought the discussion led to some interesting illuminations about relative profit for different clubs, and the stadium deals that different clubs have around the MLB. Good stuff.
  6. Not my work, but an excellent short thread that I thought you might find interesting. LINK
  7. Out of curiousity, why would the Angels give up that much for a guy unless they had assurances that he would play out the rest of his contract? The Angels aren't going to give up something along the lines of Santana and Aybar for a short-term rental when that's their offer for 3 years or whatever of Tejada. Also, to whoever noted that the Cards might not pick up Edmonds' option...there's a $3 million buyout, so essentially it's only costing them $7 million more to keep him. Even with his decline, Edmonds for one year at $7 million >> any other player available considering the current market and how many years it would likely take to sign them.
  8. What, no one is picking the Cards??? I pick the Tigers.
  9. The winds were 80-90 mph through St. Louis that day...it touched down as a tornado about 15 miles south of Busch. My house was without power for a week and four neighbors within a block had full grown trees blown onto their houses. And I still thought that clip was hilarious. The best part is the guy right in front of the one who got railed...he doesn't even notice that the guy right behind him was just picked off by a rogue trash can!
  10. OMG, this is the reason he needs to go!!!!!! Thats what we are all in agreeance on. *Sarcasim* dude, I'm not sure what your post even means. perhaps you are agreeing with me, perhaps not. but I do know that these one line posts that add nothing to the conversation are not particularly welcome. I know you are relatively new, but the general idea here is to not be like the ESPN and Cubs.com boards. I was agreeing with you. but in a sarcastic way because i feel that what you said is an obvious statementSarcasm indicates that you mean the opposite of what you are saying...hence, his confusion.
  11. That is interesting... Like somebody else said, it's just eleven games. Rolen and Encarnacion are red hot right now...that's not going to last forever. But it would be nice if it lasted until Pujols was healthy again.
  12. Actually, they probably could have. 2002: 193.2 IP 2003: 173.1 IP 2004: 174.0 IP (but included some relief pitching for St Louis) That's another reason the Cards shouldn't have traded him. He has been extremely durable since being drafted, and as Cub fans who have watched Wood and Prior spend so much time out of the rotation, we understand how important it is to have a solid pitcher who's ready to go every time his turn comes around. I sure didn't remember the 193.2. I did remember the 170s figures. Still, that's 5-6 extra starts over what what he had the two years before...all at the MLB level, which might be a little harder on the arm than whatever minor-league competition he was facing three years before. (In terms of having to bear down almost every hitter, etc...but I have no evidence to back this up). Honestly, it's not worth arguing over. Nobody thought Haren would be this good, this fast. (He was the afterthought in the trade...remember? ATL gave OAK the better arms and the Cards gave up Barton). I'm positive that LaRussa wouldn't have given Haren a significant role last year in the postseason as a rookie...not over any qualified veteran anyway. Bottom line for this trade is that it looks darn bad right now. Hopefully it won't look quite so bad in another few months.
  13. I'm a diehard Blues fan...but I was rooting for them to lose this year. Play hard, yes, but still lose. It hurt a lot...but deep down I knew that losing meant a better shot at the #1 draft pick, which was probably the best thing that could come out of the season for the Blues. Especially after management traded away Pronger, and let go or traded away any even remotely skilled forward we had. Sometimes what's best for the team in the long run isn't what's best for it right now. You just have to figure out which one is more important to the team and root for that.
  14. There's a big difference between starting and being a relief pitcher in terms of preparation and execution. Does anyone here think Wainwright is going to put up these types of numbers as a starter next year? You can be a successful reliever with one gimmick pitch. Working an order three or four times is entirely different. Yes, I am aware of that, but it was also a 212 inning year for him or something like that...I'm fairly positive he's never even come close to that before in the minors. No one could have predicted before the season how he would have responded to a workload like that.
  15. It's the inherited runners that have been the real problem...
  16. Last year Mulder was a stud over the last three months of the season and pitched credibly in the postseason as well. Probably much better than Haren would have given his inexperience (both starting in the postseason, and in dealing with late season arm fatigue), but that's impossible to really know. At the time, I felt better having Mulder out there than I would have felt having Haren starting. This year, obviously, it's a different story. Haren is pitching better, is younger, and is cheaper. It would be nice having him back, but I still don't mind the gamble that Jocketty took for last year's playoffs. Nobody knew that Mulder would fall right off the map like this at age 28 (he's only three years older than Haren, remember). If Mulder had continued his resurgence from the last three months of the season, Walt would be looking pretty decent. As it is, right now, the deal looks pretty bad. There's still time for another face-saving turnaround though...Mulder blew in the middle of last year two and still salvaged a pretty decent season out of it. Either way, I don't see the Cards signing him to a long term big dollar deal this offseason.
  17. We're silent because we came here to get away from "Cards Talk-esque" posts...
  18. Sloppy game...fitting way to end a sloppy series. My current puzzlement...if Edmonds was healthy enough to do what he did today, then why on earth didn't he make some sort of pinch hit appearance in the first game of the series???
  19. I want too go on the record as saying that I think this is a stupid, stupid move.
  20. Good game all...hope nobody gets carpal tunnel from all the typing.
  21. Just tell her they got beat by the better team :D I already told her we were playing the Cubs...
  22. I'm going to have a really hard time justifying this to my gf if the Card's lose this game....
