    Lawrie is better than every single one of our 3B options. 106 career wRC+ in over 1100 career PA despite being just 23 years old. Plus defender and the scouts loved him. Still cheap and under club control for a few more years. There are plenty of ways to rearrange the defense to accommodate Baez and Bryant if/when they force the issue. If Lawrie is on the table, the Cubs would be fools to pass him up. There's no [expletive] way he's a better option than Bryant unless the world has gone crazy. I love Bryant, but he's still got plenty to work on in the minors. He's played 16 games at A+ and 20 games in the AFL and he's still striking out in over a quarter of his plate appearances. Nobody thinks the glove is ready yet either. Steamer is currently projecting .213/.261/.348 for him. Yeah, Bryant may be a better option in the long-term. But Bryant is far from a guarantee to force his way up before the end of 2014 and be handed the starting job in 2015. It could be 2-3 years before Bryant is really ready to take over the reins.

    If I thought for a second that the Cubs are serious bidders on Tanaka, Ellsbury, Choo, or even Ubaldo I'd be feeling a lot less pessimistic right now. What was the last estimate as far as how much payroll room we have to work with though? 15 mil after arb raises or something like that? I keep trying to puzzle my way through a workable solution, but I'm stumped. What potential matches are you looking at in trades? The only guy I could really see us pushing for is Porcello.

He can work out a three way deal where we move Vitters, Jackson, Barney, and Lake for Trout and Cabrera. Then we are golden. I guess you're still fixated on Hendry. If you think signing a few mid-tier FAs are going to get us to about 88 wins, then you're drunk, stoned, or crazy. Read it again. Slower. Key off of words like "magically" and the creative use of italics. Report back to us when you grasp what I was actually saying.

    I had resigned myself to the fact it looked like the Cubs weren't going to be in on the major FA. But seeing the mid tier guys like Hudson, Johnson and Young flying off the board without our involvement is annoying. And seeing Bourjos go to the Cards really stings. There just really isn't enough in left in the mid-tier of the market to give the Cubs a reasonable shot at being a decent ballclub next year. It'd take Kazmir, Haren, and Infante. And smart bench pickups like Kottaras and Sizemore. Plus holding onto Samardzija. And being able to trade Barney+ for a 3 WAR OF. And rebounds/breakouts from Castro and Rizzo. Oh, and the pen needs to magically become awesome. All of that might get us to about 88 wins and a 50/50 shot at a wild card spot. This is going to be a frustrating offseason.

    Scott Sizemore is a FA now. I wouldn't be opposed to picking him up. He'd be a decent short side of the platoon with Valbuena, and give us another option if/when we trade Barney.

    Gotcha. Personally the Angels don't interest me as a trade partner much aside from Bourjos, so I'd prefer a smaller deal where they truly sell low on him. I'm not sure if that means as little as Villanueva for Bourjos or as much as Arrieta+Russell for Bourjos though. Yeah, there's not much on that roster that really looks like a match besides Bourjos. Trumbo could be a useful piece, but given his skillset I imagine he's going to cost a lot more than Bourjos despite being the inferior option. I wouldn't have much issue with Arrieta and Russell for Bourjos, personally. I like Arrieta as a reclamation project, but he's got long odds. And Russell is just a run of the mill reliever that we can probably find a better version of for free on the waiver wire. (Like trading Campana last year and then nabbing Sweeney on a minor league deal).

    The thing I like the least about Callaspo is that he doesn't fit the roster very well. He's able to play 2B and 3B, but he's better at 3B where we have at least 3 okay options. He's a switch hitter, but he hits better RH where we currently have 3 other options(2 once Barney is traded). He'd do the job as a bridge/platoon at 2B, but at a certain point he's only so much better than a Watkins/Murphy platoon at doing that. If the payroll is 100 million and we can still go get a quality OF and SP, then that's fine with me, especially since a good reliever is the true aim of adding Callaspo. But even if we're clearing Barney, Shark, and Schierholtz, an 85 million payroll is restrictive enough for me to worry that Callaspo would leave them unable to make more productive moves. Very good points. In a vacuum this would probably be a fine move, but there are bigger fish to fry right now.

    Callaspo has been a favorite little target of mine for years. I'd be pretty happy to get him as a "take this contract off our hands please" guy.

    I wouldn't worry about it. If the front office felt that hard up for pitching prospects they would have grabbed Gray in the draft instead of Bryant.
