  1. @Buccigross Outside the Lines has learned that MLB is preparing to suspend Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Braun and others connected to Biogenesis clinic in Miam I really needed to see this post about 15 minutes ago. Fantasy baseball issues? A guy in my league tried to trade me Braun after he saw the news. I guess he was hoping I wouldn't check.
  2. I'm happy with any of the three and am comfortable with the front office's judgment. I would be disappointed if the one we get comes significantly more expensive than the other two, though.

  4. I like Headley. But his track record has been more good than MVP caliber. And since trading for him would be to lock him up mostly in his early 30s as opposed to actually during his prime, I'm hesitant to give up potential franchise cornerstones for him. I dunno. I guess it's a good thing we'll have a lot more information to work with before a trade like this becomes a viable idea.

  6. One thing I noticed before this season that intrigued me a bit was his BABIP. For his career, it's currently sitting at .268. He leans a bit towards the flyball-heavy side of things so I would probably expect his BABIP to be a bit lower than league average, but I'm not sure it's enough to justify a career .268 figure (and I'm too lazy to run an xBABIP calculation). It's not much, but it's possible that could signal there may be a bit of offensive upside.

Cute. Wrong, but cute. As always when we have these discussions, the thresholds aren't magical numbers where the statistic instantly switches from "completely meaningless" to "ZOMG now it means something!" in a single PA. Nobody is saying that. But we're only about 60% of the way towards that threshold. Considering the quality of opponents faced to this point, I think it's prudent to see how he does against some of the lesser competition before getting ourselves all worked up.

50 PA: Swing % 100 PA: Contact Rate 150 PA: Strikeout Rate, Line Drive Rate, Pitches/PA 200 PA: Walk Rate, Groundball Rate, GB/FB 250 PA: Flyball Rate 300 PA: Home Run Rate, HR/FB 500 PA: OBP, SLG, OPS, 1B Rate, Popup Rate 550 PA: ISO For the uninitiated, that's how long it takes for a statistic to become reliable. Rizzo seems to be taking some more pitches. But we are still a ways out from being able to reliably predict what impact that's going to have on his strikeout and walk rates. It's way too early to freak out.

swinging strike % 2012: 9.6% 2013: 9.3% swings outside of the zone 2012: 38.5% 2013: 30.6% i'm not remotely worried about him yet; he's just been pretty cursed so far, it happens over a SSS this reminds me of last year when people were panicking over Shark's demise (in June?) when he was still pitching really well, just with unsustainable poor results Yeah, this. He's not doing anything different from last year. He's just had bad results to this point. I'm not reading anything into it.
  10. Sveum wasn't hired to manage a winning team. He was hired to try to turn young prospects into quality major league players.

  13. Ugh. I really hate the idea of a JumboTron.
  14. It would had to have been McNutt as he pitched the 9th. Yeah, they just corrected it. It was McNutt. Confused the hell out of me for a minute.
  15. Sweeney is a 5th OF / defensive sub type. More important than that, he's a known quantity. We really don't know what we have with Sappelt. If we were discussing a guy to be the starter, I'd see the argument for Sweeney. But since the role is a short side of the platoon and occasional pinch hitter, there's no reason not to use Sappelt right now. He could always surprise us and look a bit better than expected.
  16. Yeah, that made it way too easy.
  17. Wow. I thought Soler was better than that.
  18. What? Leaving him at closer isn't exactly throwing in the towel when we don't have anybody better for the job right now. Camp and Russell posted similar FIPs and xFIPs last year and aren't exactly big upside guys themselves. Maaaaaybe Fujikawa, but I think it's pretty early to suggest that. As to the "sucks" thing, 2010 was his best year. 2011 was definitely respectable. And he was just fine after coming off the DL in late May last year. Is anybody expecting him to revert to his 2010 form? No. But there's a very reasonable chance he could look useful to a contender. Your argument isn't logical. It's purely emotional. Which is fine, I suppose, as long as you'd rather be making silly arguments than being frustrated.
  19. Most of the people lobbying to have him taken out of the closers role are being pretty dumb. He's not an elite reliever anymore, but the Cubs don't have anybody that's any more than a 50/50 shot to be better. Best to leave him there and try to get some trade value. Besides, it's not like 3 innings pitched tells you anything about a player (not even stuff like how "hitable" they are). That said, I'm not completely ignorant as to the human factor of things. Marmol is going to have a much harder time righting the ship with all the added pressure from the media and fans. Probably best at this point to pull him out of the role, get some nice matchups to boost the stats, and maybe reintroduce him to the closers spot in Mid-May when the public has stopped paying attention -- It worked last year. It does suck that the fans had to choose a guy we're trying to trade as the scapegoat though. Why couldn't it ever be a non-entity that we shouldn't care about, like Brent Lillibridge or Joe Mather?
  20. This isn't technically the offseason anymore, but I don't know that it warrants its own thread. Apparently the Cubs signed Ryan Sweeney to a minor league deal. Nifty little deal. He's a good defender and has just enough bat. Averages almost exactly 2 WAR per 550 PA for his career (though you can probably bring that down thanks to one UZR outlier). This is what I like about Theo and Jed. They trade Campana for potentially useful pieces and then replace him with a better player for no cost. It's not going to make or break the organization, but it's nice to have people at the helm who have a clue.
  21. That's awesome. Raisin, thanks so much for all the work you put into this.
  22. I think he definitely belongs with that Whitenack, Loux, Wells grouping. And I think I like him just a tick better than Whitenack, so 22 works for me.
  23. Lets get to 50. We are close. Oh, and Starling Peralta was returned. So he's probably a lock for the 48 spot.
