  1. I am legitimately sad to see Junior Lake go. He was usually pretty bad, but sometimes he was incredibly good. That's the best eulogy I have for his Cubs career.
  2. Thank goodness for tweetdeck on a day like today.
  3. Ok. I'm not high on Haren, but he's better than our other fifth starter options. Assuming the prospects are mostly non-entities, this is a fine move. Uninspiring, but still an improvement.
  4. We don't have anybody to comp for Norris. Hes cost controlled forever and slides in the Detroit rotation right now as their best pitcher, probably.
  5. True things about Jonathan Papelbon: He's an a-hole. His fastball velocity has been declining for years. His strikeout rate has declined from his peak. More true things about Jonathan Papelbon: His walk rate has gotten significantly better to offset the loss in velocity and strikeouts. His FIP in Philly is 2.84 (2.60 in Boston) Despite playing for a terrible team, his WPA is the 3rd best in baseball amongst relievers since he joined the Phillies. Jonathan Papelbon is still one of the best closers in baseball. False things about Jonathan Papelbon: He sucks. I've never understood the Papelbon hate.
  6. That would be a huge waste. We have four perfectly acceptable starters in Lester, Arrieta, Hammel, and Hendricks. If you want to add an ace to push Hendricks to the #5 slot and out of the playoff rotation, that's fine. But acquiring two starters would mean that you're using Leake to force Hendricks to the bench. There's no real gain there, except for depth in case of an injury. And since we're just talking about a 5th starter in your scenario, you could probably get a 5th starter a lot cheaper than Mike Leake in terms of prospects after the non-waiver deadline. It doesn't really matter when you acquire them, since you wont have them on the playoff roster anyways.
  7. If you told me in the offseason that I'd see that line on gameday this season, I'd assume our record was a lot worse than six games over .500.
  8. It's irrational, but I want the Cubs to sell some prospects just to stop hearing the fans slot every Cubs prospect they've heard of into The Future as a starter. They'd still do it, just with prospects who have even less of a shot of making it happen.
  9. I feel like he was DFA'd not too long ago and the Cubs took a pass. Nobody wants that salary right now.
  10. Per twitter. Will serve as DH. Nice.
  11. I still think Marquis was an undervalued asset in his time here. Don't mistake that, I don't think he was particularly good. But he was a slightly below average back end of the rotation pitcher who contributed enough with his other skills as to be worth about what we paid him those first two years. The problem with Marquis wasn't that he in particular was overpaid. The problem was more that Hendry was incapable of getting any cheap role players. And with a bench full of guys like Neifi, a bullpen full of guys like Eyre, and our back end of the rotation usually being a bit expensive like Marquis, we didn't have room left in the budget to spend it on guys who might make a real difference.
  12. Pawelek gave up 0 ER in 63 IP while striking out 132. Even for fun, I just can't get excited by high school stats anymore.
  13. I'm not sure he has to add a whole lot more velocity, really. At 6'8", he probably releases the ball closer to home plate than most pitchers. So that should give him a couple ticks of phantom velocity.
  14. I imagine that's the case a lot of the time. Hard to bench those guys you're paying big money for. So you keep running them out there until they're either fixed or you can justify just dumping them.
  15. The 'if traded' thing is worthy of consideration, but otherwise it's a 'if you do things you've never done in your career in 2016, sure you can void the option'. And if he actually reaches those milestones in 2016, I'll be so happy about his previous year's performance that I wouldn't even care if he opted out of his contract.
  16. It means nothing. If they get a deal they like they'll gladly sign Fowler to a 4-5 year extension with the intent to trade him off before the end of the contract.
  17. I'm on board with Happ, Aiken, or even Daz.
  18. Yeah, I'm still sitting here wondering if they're going to bring them back out. Rizzo looked like he missed the tag there badly.
  19. Ok, I found this weird sign on reddit and thought some of you may get a kick out of it. Mildly NSFW, due to a poorly drawn boob. [spoil]http://i.imgur.com/qHOZ3eS.jpg[/spoil] The answer? [spoil]5 to 4 in the bottom of the fifth with one out and no one on.[/spoil]
  20. I can't help but give Neyer a partial pass. He's outshined completely by better writers when trying to write about current events. But he does a good job with historical stuff, and it was a lot of his work that provided a base for me to move into trying to really and truly understand the statistics behind the game of baseball. I wont ever hate the guy, but I'll roll my eyes and wish he was working on a book instead of writing articles for his website.
