  1. Why trade the Bs if you can't good return? Given the grim outlook, I'd rather hang on to a Pie for CF than trade him + a handful of take-your-picks for another Pierre. eta: Of course, I retain high hopes for Gallagher & Veal being eventual contributors.
  2. What are you considering a long-term contract in this scenario? Anything over 3 years? It's true, the Cubs didn't and don't have options. But they won't concede to a rebuilding effort. If nothing else, the Tribune Co. is breaking apart and they want to retain the short-term value of the asset. Which is worrisome in that Hendry will be under pressure to trade what few players of value in the farm system for another stopgap who can be easily labeled and marketed.
  3. 6/90 is still $15/yr if you don't backend the deal. He'll get plus that easily from someone else. When did 'Beltran money' become shorthand for Outrageous Contract? (am I misinterpeting the intent of using that phrase?) BTW, Beltran signed his contract -- which to me isn't hugely onerous -- after asking for 10Y/$200M out of the gate. Aramis' agent is starting the process with Beltran's contract as the asking price out of the gate.
  4. Beltran money? LORDY How's a small market team like the Cubs supposed to be able to sign anyone asking for Beltran money?
  5. The sub-.500 record under 25 years of ownership doesn't give me the warm fuzzies, either. It's broken; it keeps getting worse (remember the glorious late 80s?!); bring on the new ownership!
  6. HA, that's the same offer they made to Beltran. 5/75.
  7. No way? He did that. What a puke. He's also under the impression that we all watch Matlock. It's pretty obvious why Cub fans are drunk all the time. We're just trying to dull the pain of being Cub fans. Yeah ... Sullivans's still an ass, regardless.
  8. Sullivan was probably too busy working on another Special Report to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch on drunk Cubs fans to make more than one phone call.
  9. Iwamura for 3b. Too late, bidding ended already I thought it was going to end on Wednesday? It ended yesterday, they have until Thursday to accept/reject, the Padres submitted a bid, I haven't heard who else was a confirmed bidder.
  10. Ramirez or bust with me. And by "bust", I don't mean Adrian Beltre. Seconded.
  11. If they lose Ramirez, I'd still hope they sign Zambrano. Lee and Barrett, should be traded by Dec. 1, though. If Z stays, it will only be because of some illogical yet psychotically awesome attachment to the Cubs coupled with the fact that Hendry and everyone else would be afraid to say "no" to his face. That's the only hope. And Lee and Barrett won't be traded. They need to placate the true believers. Gotta keep the seats filled, and there are a lot of koolaid drinkers out there.
  12. Somehow this will end up costing about $120M.
  13. Honestly? I hope he spends a lot of money signing a lot of mediocre players to short-term contracts. Hendry is a short-termer. He should have been fired with the change in management and wasn't. He'll be gone when new ownership arrives. I just hope that he doesn't screw up this franchise for the next decade with idiotic moves to try to salvage next year.
  14. He is gonna get chastized at the Convention. He better just do a video conference. I'm sure they'll be teary-eyed at the sight of 16,000 people paying for the privilege of being in the same room as they are.
  15. Penny wise, Pound stupid. Same old story.
  16. That's my take, too. If Aramis walks, I just see this as another cycle on the treadmill where a bunch of lip service is paid to competing while washed-up vets are shuffled in and out.
  17. Not announcing a deal tonight would be a disservice to the throngs of Cubs fans standing by, ready to inject their foreheads!
  18. There's no problem with discussing whether Hendry is technically an idiot ... but can we keep this thread focused on hysteria over Aramis staying/leaving, plz? If I need to start a new thread for the Hendry talk, I'm happy to do so.
  19. Link. Yay? :| Who's the second choice for 3B?
  20. On Steiner's show today there was a lot of talk about how Drew opting out helped the Dodgers by freeing up a boatload of cash that they can throw at premiere free agents like Aramis.
  21. Welcome to the forums! :) The same link was posted a couple of pages ago and people are discussing it now.
