  1. Looked to me like he hit Dmitri Young on purpose. Young had two homers (2-2) prior to that at bat.

  4. I would have won this thing if all the players went to the destinations I picked for 'em. Book it.
  5. Ronnie really likes to be heard at Spring Training. Less spectators, smaller venue= hearing Ronnie no matter where he's at for the entire game.
  6. Never heard of any of these guys.
  7. Kris Benson? The Mets are idiots, and they are run by PR people. Minaya is a Sosa lover and he's been dying to take credit for him since the late 90's. Everybody thought they could have had Vladdy if they wanted him, but they didn't. Everybody thought they could have had any big name free agent since 2000, but all they got was Glavine. You never know with those guys. Kris Benson at half a year and 3m is a big difference from Sammy at 2 years and 35m. The only way Hendry would eat a huge chunk of Sammy's salary would be if we got quality talent in return, and I think the Mets would be boarding the 2005 version of the Titanic if they did that. Hey, if we can get someone to take Sosa, I'm all for it. I honestly thought he finally figured out what he was doing wrong and fixed that problem with 5 games left in the season, unfortunately, he decided to wait until there were only 5 games left to make that adjustment. If nobody takes him, then all I can do is hope that the adjustment he made in those last 5 games of the season carries over to 2005.
  8. How would you feel about Matsui, Walker, Aramis, Beltran, Lee, Patterson, Barrett, Dubois? I'm sure that could be arranged if Sammy is shipped out to the Mets for Matsui. I'd love it. But why would the Mets make that deal? Why wouldn't they just sign Beltran themselves? Or Richie Sexson? or Carlos Delgado? or JD Drew? Etc... I would say a big reason would be that obviously the player has to WANT to go to the team. I would say that would make it diificult to sign most of them. Not impossible, just difficult. In addition, none of them would put butts in the seats like Sosa would. More butts equals more money equals more revenue equals better teams equals more butts equals.............you get the idea. Money makes a guy want to go to a team. It's why A-Rod went to Texas. It's why Mike Hampton went to Colorado. It's why Pudge went to Detroit. NYM has a lot going for them. They have a lot of money available and they have some key guys that are young and inexpensive. Why wouldn't a guy want to play for the Mets? I guess I just can't grasp why the Mets would skip out on all the big name free agents and give up some of their players for a guy who is clearly not the same player he once was.

  10. He also got to a shot down the right field line quickly and fired a strike to 2nd base to keep the hitter from advancing. Dubois is an interesting problem. He's most likely ready for a major league job. However, what's his value as a Cub if he doesn't play everyday? I don't think he's someone you can give a back up job to, as he will rust sitting on the bench. You could go with him as a platoon, but the right handed hitter will get the lesser amount of playing time due to the high percentage of right handed pitchers (ignoring the way Dusty used Grudz and Walker this season). The other issue is that Lee, Sosa, Ramirez, Barrett and possibly Nomar make the line up right hand dominant, something the team struggled with this year. LF is a place we can upgrade with a lefty bat, and possibly a top of the order OBP type guy, something else the team is sorely lacking. If we went with Dubois in left, I'm not really sure why we shouldn't just resign Moises to a 1 year deal, since Dubois will most likely be a lesser Moises, at least at the plate. And I want Moises gone. IMO, LF is where the Cubs need to address the top of the order, assuming Todd Walker comes back and hits 2nd. LF lead off hitter, Walker, Nomar, Aramis, Patterson, Sosa, Lee, Barrett
  11. Why is it that you can list Weston and Mallory as potential late bloomers, but all of our lefty prospect pitchers can't achieve a higher status than poop tossing lefties?
  12. Beckett is getting worked by Montreal this evening.
  13. This is all true, no doubt. Pretty slick move for a small-market team to invest its revenue-sharing funds in a major league pseudo-star, satisfying local fans and the MLBPA, then trade away the contract for prospects a few months later, thus preserving the windfall. The old bait-and-switch, as a used car salesman might say! The Brewers will have all kinds of teams knocking on their door this year, with guys like Spivey, Jenkins, Counsell, Overbay, Ginter and Grieve. They also have a lot of bullpen arms that could fetch more prospects down the stretch. They have a lot of talented kids on the farm, and with attendance hurting, they may push to get some of these guys up to the bigs as soon as possible. While it isn't the wisest of decisions to rush these hot prospects, I wouldn't be surprised to see quite a few of them getting some quality playing time later in the season.
  14. My sole purpose for looking up Calvin Murray in the first place was to compare his defense with Macias, and honestly, except for more service time for Murray in center, I don't see that much difference. Certainly not enough difference to warrant signing him. With Walker and Martinez being able to cover all of the infield spots, I think I'd rather see someone like Kelton getting some pinch hitting duty and part time left field work rather than having Macias, Goodwin and Murray all on the roster until Patterson comes back. Well, I suppose Alou could use the defensive replacement late in games, so nevermind.
  15. I thought the news out of the convention was that Corey was progressing on schedule to be ready for opening day. What this? That's pretty much how I heard it. Baker did say on the radio earlier in the day that the Cubs had signed Calvin Murray to cover themselves in center, just in case Corey wasn't ready quite on time; but that's just a standard precaution. I'm not sure I understand the need for Calvin Murray. We have Goodwin, Macias and Hollandsworth to cover center in Patterson's absence, correct? Goodwin obviously would get most of the playing time until Patterson was ready. Macias doesn't appear to be all that bad there either. Off on a different tangent. I did a search on ESPN for Calvin Murray and it brought up Calvin and Heath Murray. I clicked on Heath as it stated he was on the Cubs roster. Lefty reliever with a horrible track record in the major leagues. No service time in 2003 with any teams. Non roster invitee I presume? Old information?
  16. Big congrats Hoops. I admire your ability to find hot new information. However, I sincerely respect your ability to always debate a topic in the friendliest of manner. Well deserved award!! :D
