  1. He more or less split his time in the minors between catcher and first base and played first almost exclusively in the majors, save for a whopping 16 innings at catcher in 2004. He also has 3 career major league innings at the corner outfield spots. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/S/Chris-Shelton.shtml
  2. You know what I mean. This: http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r71/bcvm22/sigzeon/ph_136725.jpg
  3. With the full Abe Lincoln goatee; it's not even a question. If I were Hendry or any GM, I wouldn't even negotiate with him if there was no goatee involved. It's part of his mystique.
  4. Looking at the numbers, I'm not sure I'd mind him in RF if we lose out on Fukudome.
  5. Given Rosenthal's track record thus far this offseason, I'm inclined to simply keep my fingers crossed for now.
  6. Love the interview with the Riot, but even he doesn't quite have his uniform number history right. ELI: You've been forced to switch numbers several times over the past couple seasons, are you finally set with number 2? RYAN: I was actually thinking about switching to number three for next year. I've made a couple changes. I never wanted to be number 55, I always wanted a single number. So I moved to seven, then to three, and then back to seven. But DeRo [Mark DeRosa] took that so I got two. I think I will stay with number 2, unless we acquire Derek Jeter this off season. He wore no. 55 when he was called up in 2005, started 2006 with that number, switched to no. 3 early on, took no. 7 when Walker was traded away and Izturis was traded for and then gave DeRosa no. 7 and took no. 2 this past offseason. 8-[ :-"
  7. Per his Wikipedia entry, "it was during the 1994 season that he began to use his given name, "Ichiro" instead of his surname, "Suzuki" on the back of his uniform. Suzuki is the second most common surname in Japan, and his manager introduced the idea as a publicity stunt to help create a new image for what had been a relatively weak team, as well as a way to distinguish their rising star. Initially, Ichiro disliked the practice and was embarrassed by it, but "Ichiro" was a household name by the end of the season and he was flooded with endorsement offers."
  8. When he reminds us all that he'll wear KOSUKE on his MLB jersey. Why exactly is that? I know Ichiro does it, but you didn't see Hideo Nomo with "Hideo" on his jersey. So Taguchi's jersey doesn't say "So." Chan Ho Park's jersey doesn't say "Chan." Did Tuffy Rhodes' jersey say "Tuffy?" It kind of bothers me that Ichiro did it and this guy is supposedly doing it too. This guy is doing it because another player (can't recall who) warned him what Fukudome could be confused for in English. If I understand right, he has Fukudome on his jersey in Japan, but will change it for translation reasons in the States. As stated earlier in the thread, it was some friendly advice from Alex Ochoa, who told him the surname "FUKUDOME" wouldn't quite translate to American culture for obvious reasons.
  9. Was I misreading it that badly? Wow. Oh well. What he said.
  10. When he reminds us all that he'll wear KOSUKE on his MLB jersey.
  11. This scouting report predicted 3-4 years totaling $12-15 million over the length of the contract, but that was before he had the elbow problems.
  12. I think in this case it can be allowed. The guy's name is FUKUDOME. It's a perfectly normal surname in Japan, not so much here. If the guy wants to head off a possible minor distraction before it starts and just not worry about it, I'm fine with it.

  14. Superb. They can sign David [Hustlehoff] Eckstein to play shortstop and call it an offseason.
  15. Urgh. Just say no, Jim. We already have enough players on the roster who typically decide not to turn it on until 25 games into the season; we don't need a guy who, among other shortcomings, can't actually play until 25 games in.
  16. Sources: Schilling, Sox near deal Supposedly worth $8 million base, $5 million in incentives. Cross him off the list.
  17. Why's that? I don't think he does that in Japan. Did he say otherwise? It was some friendly advice from his teammate Alex Ochoa. "If you play in America, wear Kosuke on your back instead of Fukudome. It'll translate better." Fukudome himself has said as much as well, I believe.
  18. http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/P/Ppinil001.htm Retrosheet has his career ejections by year. 14 as a player, 59 as a manger for his career.
  19. The same reason people harp on Muskat for just doing her job. In a "perfect" (see: not real) world, PR writers are 100% objective and critical of the organizations that pay them to write fluff and sports agents say things like "My client would play for free if it meant he could play the game he loves forever."
  20. I don't know the precise answer to this, but I do recall reading that in a 4-inning simulated game the Rockies played last week, Clint Hurdle saw some time in left field and Vinny Castilla, who isn't on the 40-man or the coaching staff, played third base, which gives some idea of whatever restrictions there are.
  21. Who knows, maybe Papelbon will tear off Beckett's arm in a drunken dancing mishap. "Keep the faith."
  22. Can you imagine Demp in that situation? We'd all kill ourselves.
  23. You could tie it to the fact that Jackson's name was bandied about in widespread rumors of trades with the White Sox back around the deadline, while Murton's name didn't really pop up in too many reports of that ilk. You could also figure it's largely because fans of Jackson's team are, for the most part, morons.
