  2. He plays third base without any problems throwing across the diamond in a timely fashion, I can't imagine he'd be any worse than Theriot arm-wise at shortstop.
  3. Joe Blanton was a name kicked around on the board here, but I'd wager that after trading for Roberts, further emptying of the farm system will be minimal this offseason.
  4. I'd give him a low-base pay, incentive-laden contract without question.
  5. ESPN just did a graphic showing the Cubs' "possible 2008 lineup" to go with their 10-second news bit about Fukudome's introduction. My favorte part was Murton in LF and Sori at 2B. #-o [expletive] ESPN, no need to do a little fact checking, eh? Just smear some crap on a graphic and run it.
  6. Per ESPN and Rotowire by way of Yahoo! Sports, pending a physical.
  7. We probably won't know for absolute sure until we see some official merchandise show up on Cubs.com or Muskat confirms it in one of the mailbags, but you would think that in introducing their prize free agent signing, the organization's historic first Japanese player, they would have made extra sure they got the name he wanted on the first public photo opportunity of him wearing the jersey.
  8. Kosuke looked like he was chuckling at Muskat.
  9. What about Alex Ochoa? Won't someone think of Alex Ochoa? :(
  10. Hey! Hey! That jersey has the wrong name on the back! They can't do that, dangit!
  11. Pagan is 1/2 left-handed. That has to count for something, right? :-k
  12. http://mlb.mlb.com/images/2007/12/17/GVTYMZXL.jpg The Rays gave him a press conference. I didn't know Cliff Floyd generated that sort of media attention anymore.
  13. I imagine most of them will set it straight once Fukudome is introduced this week. Has anyone heard what day his press conference is yet?
  14. I don't think there's strictly a rule against it, but I've always figured that teams "strongly encourage" their marquee players (read: players they mass produce jerseys and shirts for) not to change numbers on a whim, because then they have to manufacture new merchandise and market it. Slightly different situation, but I remember that during the WBC in 2006, Miguel Tejada wanted to wear No. 4 (his number with Oakland) on his Dominican team jersey, but was turned away from doing so because they had already made a ton of merchandise with No. 10 (his number with Baltimore) on it. Any piece of merchandise licensed by the MLBPA (which I'd wager is most of it, outside of the really really cheap stuff sold outside Wrigley) will say KOSUKE 1 on it to match his jersey. Furthermore, I think I saw where someone on this board tried to order a FUKUDOME 1 custom jersey/shirt and the order was cancelled shortly thereafter. The bottom line is that I think the Cubs and their official licensors will try and cut down on FUKUDOME 1 merchandise as much as possible, but the fans are a resourceful and free-spending lot and the Fukudome name is going to get its fair share of play on unlicensed/customized merchandise.
  15. Let's file that in the "Possible but Unlikely" column for now.
  16. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-071212cubs-fukudome,0,3419710.story 12th paragraph.
  17. PETCO's going to go a long way in sapping what power Edmonds has left.
  18. GEOVANY SOTO If you meant a jersey shirt, I imagine they'll start showing up in select outlets once the new season starts and Soto (possibly/hopefully) adopts a new uniform number. This season was the first time Soto had made any real impact on the team, and with him penciled in as the starting catcher next season, I'm sure he'll get a shirt, even if it is hard to find. I've seen authentic-style Fontenot, Marmol and Theriot shirts in some places around Wrigley; if a backup second baseman, a middle reliever and a glorified utilityman can get shirts, I'm sure the starting catcher can. ...Geovany Soto
  19. Ah, that does make sense. I forget sometimes that despite being big free agents, the Japanese players are technically rookies and subject to the rules of service time and such. Thanks.
  20. I saw this on Cot's Baseball Contracts and hadn't seen it anywhere else. Contract includes clause requiring club to sign Fukudome to an extension by 2011 or release him, allowing him to become a free agent. http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com/2005/01/chicago-cubs_112114177768677294.html So if I'm reading this right, the Cubs are required to either extend him prior to the '11 season or void the last season of the contract and let him become a free agent? Is that accurate?
  21. Great trade for Houston, but I do not at all see the value from Arizona's end.
