    what banks said. it adds much lacking OBP & speed to the lineup without giving up a ton of prospects. Troll for a top 3 SP after that.

    getting on base does matter. It drives me nuts when people say it doesn't. Again, look at the red sox lineup. Those guys take pitches & get on base. They work counts & get into the opponent's bullpen. It forces the other team to throw strikes which creates better hitters as they eventually see better pitches to hit earlier in the count. Putting Khalil Greene's 3-1 strikeout to walk ratio, .250 average & sub .300 OBP onto this team that is already dreadfully full of these guys (including our overpriced leadoff hitter) makes no sense. We were swept out of the playoffs for a reason...because we did not get on base so that our better hitters mattered when they came up. Khalil Greene does have power although he's only shown it for one year & this team already has enough power hitters. What it needs is more speed, more patient hitters & better placed hitters in the lineup. A closer as well as another 1-3 starter is needed but first things first. This team used to be built by putting together a slowpitch softball hitting lineup. That doesn't work in the major leagues anymore.

    i think greene is highly overrated & I hope he doesn't land here. I believe in low strikeout guys & guys w/ high OBP...especially those at the top of the order. Go scan the Red Sox roster & look at their obp stats. They showed the rest how it is done while our lineup full of dave kingman's went down in four straight. It is very evident that the Cub organization is shifting offensive philosophy. fuko is a high obp guy & they covet roberts as a leadoff hitter for the same reason. They want soriano out of the top spot. For the cubs to get back to the playoffs & create any run at all it is a must.

    so...your question is...do i come on here just to get a rise out of people? No. Do i think others do, especially the ones that say over & over again that OBP is overrated & that striking out isn't a bad thing? yes.

    you are wrong. I just find it strange that the only ones that feel soriano is a good leadoff hitter, the only ones that feel khalil greene is "all that" & that brian roberts would not be a huge upgrade in regards to leading off & moving soriano's bat down in the lineup...are a few posters on this message board.

    he is far down the list of shortstops as he does not hit for average, strikes out a ton & does not get on base. He had one year of above average power & is still fairly young.

    i could say the same exact thing of you in regards to saying the same thing. Is Greene better than Theriot? Yes. Does this offense need more players that get on base & strikeout less? Yes. I am all for Greene if we don't have to give up much for this .254, low obp, high strikeout player that also doesn't steal bases. An upgrade, but not a major upgrade to Theriot. The guy trying to argue that striking out is better for the offense needs some help as that is possibly the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

    you get tired of me bashing soriano as a leadoff hitter? I get tired of those saying he is fine there. I also get tired of the khalil green bandwagon. How is my drum banging any different than the others in regards to these players? to the poster that thinks his fantasy baseball skills rival those of hendry/piniella...you are really out of touch w/ reality. why did piniella bat sori leadoff last year? 1. there were no other options 2. that was part of the negotiation when sori was signed & helped him choose chicago over others. He is also on record saying he'd move out of the leadoff spot if it was best for the team. Stoney is on record saying sori will move only if a legit/better leadoff hitter was brought to the team. Kasper indicated today that fuko might be considered if we don't deal for roberts. our best case scenario is roberts & bedard while keeping hill somehow. we are overvaluing pie imo & should part w/ him, cedeno, gallagher & marshall & others. If you haven't noticed...we are going for it all these days. We will not win w/ sori hitting leadoff, w/ our current starting staff, w/ derosa & theriot starting at the same time. derosa is a super sub...plain & simple.

    it's funny that the only ones advocating derosa to stay as a starter & as soriano to stay in the leadoff spot are message board posters. Steve Stone, Jim Hendry, Len Kasper & Piniella all are in favor of derosa being a super sub w/ soriano moving down the lineup as he is not a good fit at leadoff in this lineup. This is not so much about adding roberts as about adding a natural leadoff hitter. Len Kasper on the score even hinted today that fuko may be looked at to lead off if roberts or another leadoff hitter is added. That's the first i've heard this so it is very clear that people in the know (not message board posters) are advocating for soriano to move down in the order.

    as stated previously, the red sox lineup is chock full of patient hitters. It is well documented that was their offensive philosophy. I never said you had to have speed. I said we have a team full of free swingers & bad baserunners. The red sock hitters take pitches...not just at the top of the lineup either. They work the count & get into the opponent's bullpen. The Cub does the opposite. We keep average pitchers in the game by aggressively swinging at everything.

    wrigley boy? let's save the sophomoric nonsense. I never heard stone say that & I highly doubt he did. there was a time a couple yrs ago that aramis was constantly hurt, would go in prolonged slumps & wailed away at the plate. He showed a complete lack of character when dlee went down by tucking his tail & seemed to have given up. Many thought the cubs were looking to move his salary at the time. With a healthy lee, he came back to form last year. Speaking of a lineup full of free swingers, for those johnny peralta lovers out there...he brings no speed to the lineup & whiffed a whopping 146 times last year. He is hardly what this lineup needs.

    so only qualified people can post on message boards? I've got news for you. Ones that are really qualified have enough going on in their lives that they don't feel the urge to post on message boards. And speaking of qualifications. Steve Stone would have a few & he also is not a fan of soriano leading off. Hendry had to promise this to soriano last year as that was his wish when he was a free agent. That is now over. Hendry has been shopping for a leadoff hitter for a reason. I doubt he would have done it if Piniella wasn't on board so that makes three baseball people that are not only more qualified than all of us, but ones that are much closer to the day to day action to form those opinions. Soriano's mindset is to hit the ball when he bats leadoff. His mentality as a leadoff hitter should be to take pitches & run the count to 8 or 9 pitches, take lots of walks...put the team's needs above their own. Soriano has never shown me that mindset. This of course...is my opinion, but also appears to be that of others that are very knowledgeable.

    like i said, sori does not have the mental approach to be a leadoff hitter nor the baserunning skills. He has the mentality of a 3-5 hitter. He was put into a position that does not fit his mental approach. Why? because we did not have a good leadoff option. If we get one & then move sori down then our offense gets much better imo...especially w/ the addition of a lefty in fuko.

    yeah it was. he does not show the patience needed, working the count, smart baserunning needed of leadoff hitters. Also, he has more of a 3-5 hitter swing as he is an aggressive hitter. There was a reason why fuko was added & we were chasing roberts & now a possible figgins. This team lacks patient hitters up & down the lineup. Another year of Soriano leading off by swinging at the first pitch, flailing at high strikes, outside strikes ala shawn dunston & pulling hammy's, running through stop signs...means another one & out for the Cub.

    our offense is horrible because it is a lineup full of free swingers & bad baserunners. We helped our plate discipline by the addition of fukodome. If that is the only offensive improvement then that will not be enough. The Red Sox are a team based on patient hitters that work the count in order to tap the other teams bullpen. We are built to keep the starter in the game. Until that changes, we will go nowhere again. Soriano leading off is a selfish move on his part just like his at bats are. To go from Roberts to Lieber & Byrd is a joke.

    you have your head in the sand on the leadoff issue. soriano is a very overrated leadoff hitter which is why hendry is in the market for one in the first place. derosa's value during his career has been as a bench player/super sub. Steve Stone, Jim Hendry & Lou Piniella all agree w/ this. What makes you smarter than them?

    for all of you derosa lovers out there, why is it that roberts play in mlb all star games while derosa has only started for a couple of yrs?

    roberts is a huge upgrade at 2B. He is the 5th rated 2B in baseball & is an all-star. DeRosa has only been a fulltime starting 2B for a couple yrs & is nowhere near the top 20 in mlb. DeRosa would more than likely start at SS over theriot if we get roberts. Soriano at leadoff got us swept in the playoffs. Piniella wants him moved down in the order.

    David, why do you have to be such a jerk? Everyone knows you are not in favor or Roberts or for taking Soriano out of the leadoff spot. I have news for you....Piniella wants it to happen & that's what matters so you better get used to it. This is a message board for opinoins. Do you really get off on taking parts of opinions & ridiculing them? Is there an award for this that I'm not aware of?
