  1. isn't our old Alex Gonz on the way to retirement or something? EDIT: oops i see that NCC already said that he did.
  2. JD Drew will be a much much better hitter than Soriano in his 'decline' years. that should be considered.
  3. the reason Aramis got himself an agent is so that he has someone who will get him the best possible deal and that includes getting top dollar. some ask what's the difference between $10M and $15M since someone making either amount won't have their lifestyle changed as opposed to someone getting an offer of $75K vs. $65K. i say this really has nothing to do with the amount of money but rather how a person looks at money (read: attitude towards dollars). How a person values money when the amounts are still small is the same way that person will value money when the amounts are so much bigger. If you are willing to hold out on a 50 dollar offer to wait for a 60 dollar offer then you will also hold out on a 13 million offer if you can get a 16 million offer. the amounts will change but the attitude is generally the same. i once heard a millionaire being asked: "How much is enough?" He promptly answered: "Just a little bit more". Funny but that's human nature.
  4. MLB only informs Seibu of the highest bid. they are not informed on who the team is or what the other bids are. if/when Seibu accepts is the only time MLB reveals who the team is and what the winning bid is to the general public.
  5. You forget that they are a half day ahead, so tonight will be Saturday morning for them...I'm guessing the board will not make their decision over the weekend.this is a pretty big deal for them, they may not be waiting around for 5 oclock and then saying 'okay time to go, everyone have a good weekend'. the japanese are hard workers, maybe will be putting in some OT this weekend. i hope. IMO 32 business hours is plenty enough to make this decision. I hope you are right, but as the clock ticks it seems more likely that we are not going to hear anything from Japan until next week. However, that does not rule out leaks coming from the MLB offices in DC. Until the Lions accept the offer, they should have no clue what team it comes from. yes the japanese are hard workers but you have to remember the decision is not being made by middle management. it falls upon the board directors who are not bound to come to work from 8am-5pm let alone coming to the office everyday. the board of directors usually meet only once or twice a month, but this decision will probably warrant a specially convened meeting and so it's possible that they would meet even if it is the weekend.
  6. Everyone has been focusing on the WRONG words with these rumors. The key words really are: those words tell you that the writers know about as much as we do (which is not much) and that all they are doing is guessing (which is what we are doing).
  7. He had the 3rd best OPS for NL RFs. Hit .285 with 27 homeruns and is under contract for 9M for the next two years. Not to say that I like him or anything, but thats the sale I make to anyone interested. I'd love to send him to the Nats and get Kearns, Church, and Vidro in return. Not really sure if theres any other teams out there that would be interested. Possibly the Dodgers, Giants, Rangers. I don't think the Nationals would give up young talent for a vet like Jones. Not exactly what a team in rebuilding mode would do.
  8. Why? I've worked with too many companies to be surprised to see one take every available minute to make even a simple decision. I'd have to agree here. you wouldn't believe how slow big corporations can make decisions. were talking about a board of directors here who probably have lots of other stuff to keep them busy besides the baseball team. let's give it some more time.
  9. hey, the cubs need all the starting pitching they can get. i say come one come all, buy one take one.
  10. hall of fame voters are indeed an eccentric bunch. you never can tell if its stats, or awards, or milestones that put someone over the top. maybe its what the voter ate for breakfast that day. i'd think he has a shot at being a HOF but definitely will take quite a few ballots before he makes it.
  11. That's rather interesting how signing bonuses are applied in baseball. I believe in the NFL that signing bonuses are in equal installments over the guaranteed years.
  12. I'm an optimist so i prefer speculating on a Wrigley reacquiring the Cubs.
  13. My guess is Ryno asked to be on the staff as a way for him to get his future managerial career going and the Cubs were happy to oblige him because it is good PR for the team.
  14. don't they have to pay the $50M regardless of whether the player signs w/ them or not? if that's the case then i don't see any reason why you would blow millions just to prevent your opponent from signing a player that good. it makes no sense at all. if a player is good enough to keep your opponents from getting then he should be good enough to sign for your own team.
  15. I am tired of these beautifull girls you keeping flashing us Ole Miss, I am starting to believe they are really your sisters and these are family vacation photos. If not, then you are my idle. makes you wish you were that mascot.
  16. play with that fire but dont get burned
  17. Evidence that a player's production goes up 20-30% during their contract year? I guess I don't have any hard evidence, but observation seems to point to much better production during a player's contract year. All of a sudden .260 hitters turn into .300 hitters, guys who average 25 HRs hit 35 HRs, and pitchers who win 12 games suddenly become 18 game winners. I don't think there's a single 25 homer guy out there who wouldn't want to hit 35 every single year.
  18. There is no truth at all to that part of the report. None whatsoever. That's good to know. I still hold on to a slim hope that Bochy is hired over Lou.
  19. hahahahahha. who needs google when you got nsbb? :)
  20. Definitely one of the greatest photshops ever, though it became hopelessly outdated. Too bad there was never a 2006 version. I have to admit that it's already a bit outdated. We did come out with a Rookie Edition a while back.
  21. I corrected that for ya. We may have the Trib for owners but we are still NOT the Yankees. The problem with this team is that lately Hendry keeps acquiring the most mediocre players available at above market rates.
  22. It's quite obvious the the high K and high BB rate is a direct result of the organizational thrust regarding pitching: we keep drafting, signing and trading for kids who can throw 90++ nevermind if they can't hit the strike zone. I think everytime we acquire one of these players, the front office is always hoping that he will learn to have command. I blame Jim Hendry for this philosophy.
  23. isn't it funny though how practically all of the Cubs highly touted pitching prospects have "lively" arms but poor control? just for once i'd rather see someone who throws in the high 80's but has good command.
