  1. Yes, but the deadline for doing that is December 20th, not today.
  2. Don't forget that we're acquiring Mench to send him to Oakland for Zito. :D
  3. Why wouldn't they with Nomar, just in case? Even if they have no intentions of re-signing him right now, wouldn't it be nice to not close that door for a couple of weeks? Because, if he accepts, you're potentially on the hook for a lot of money for a guy who'll end up being a glorified utility guy.
  4. Please read my post above carefully. Everything you need is in there.
  5. Everything I've heard is that today is the arbitration deadline. Isn't that the same thing? Today is the deadline for offering arbitration to your free agents (Nomar, Burnitz). December 20th is the deadline for offering contracts to all of the players under your control - arbitration eligible guys like Zambrano, Patterson, Hairston, and Macias - and 0-3 guys like Murton, Cedeno, Wuertz, Hill, etc. When you offer ("tender") a contract to an arbitration eligible guy like Macias, you have in effect offered him arbitration. If you don't, you've "non-tendered" him.
  6. Today is the Non-Tender Deadline Not true.
  7. they already have maybury who fits that description. Mabry should get the Macias role. Get another 4th OF type, like Bigbie. Bigbie-Murton-Mabry-Perez-Blanco is a bench I could finally support. Who starts in left? I think you only have 12 guys. I'm one of the ones that wants to bring in 3 new outfielders (including Pierre). As a primary LF, Floyd would work. Wilkerson, too. Green. Huff. Any number of guys.

  9. Abreu + Utley wouldn't do it for you? :D Abreu, Utley, and Rollins, for Prior and Walker? I'm still probably wouldn't do it. That deal I would do yesterday.
  10. He gets on base at a rate 50 points higher. I'm not a big Soriano fan, but that's really not a fair statement. It's generally been more like 20-30. I know about the home/away splits. Please don't cover that ground again. That kind of thing is not always predictive. This would be the worst time to acquire Soriano, because next season is probably going to the highest salary he'll ever earn (unless he gets a whole lot better soon - unlikely). Soriano is durable, while Walker isn't (for whatever reason). That's a huge plus in his favor. Games missed by your second baseman will be played by Neifi. Neither one is very good defensively. If the Cubs are dead set on trading Walker (for whatever reason) AND the Rangers get to a point where they're essentially giving him away AND we wind up with $10 million that we can't spend on anyone else, I'd take Soriano. A lot of bad stuff would have to happen for me to want him.
  11. I assume you're looking for an answer more sophisticated than "it's against the rules".
  12. Zito or bust. If no Zito, stay with the in-house options.
  13. Get Mench from the Rangers and turn around and send him with a couple of prospects (Hill and ?) for Zito.
  14. Interesting that you want proven power, but you also say no to a guy with 303 career HR's... The simple fact is Shawn Green hasn't been the same player ever since he has had shoulder problems. The past two years he has been a notorious slow starter so it's not interesting at all. Well OK, then I wasn't aware that he had injury problems. I can tolerate an older player, but not an older player with injury problems. I'd therefore have to go for A or B then, with the caveat that I don't want A for too long, and don't want him if he has past history of injury problems. Who are these dudes? You've chosen defensive liability Raul Ibanez (A) and certifiable nutjob Milton Bradley (B).
  15. If you can't get a dominant RF, the right thing to do is get three new OF and move Murton to a platoon/4th OF role. The guy's going to be 24 all season long; it won't hurt him to not play every single day this season. The Cubs need to get deep enough in the OF so that Mabry (or Bigbie) doesn't get 400+ PA. Green is very good against RHP, but he's weak against LHP. I wouldn't mind playing him with Murton in LF and getting Bradley or Wilkerson to play RF. Green is extremely durable, but he'd probably benefit from some more time off as he moves into his mid-30s.
  16. I'm sure Bruce will confirm that Mitre is included and Muskat is wrong (what a shock!).
