  1. With twelve pitchers (and assuming Miller's starting) we'll have 4 spots to fit Guzman, Wood, Ohman, Wuertz, Cotts, Cherry. Lou has said Wuertz is in and we could assume Wood will be left behind at the start. That leaves 3 spots for Guzman, Cotts, Cherry and Ohman. Who is the odd man out? Even if we were to assume we'd wait on Cotts or Guzman and option them at the start, we'd eventually--and soon--be forced to make a move (especially if you consider Wood steps into the pen soon enough.) Whom of these pitchers could we fetch something worthwhile for while being expendable enough? I don't think we need 3 lefties. Ohman would likely serve as a better LOOGY to us than Cotts, and Hendry wants the security of Eyre on the backend, but I don't see them dumping Cotts after trading for him nor him staying in Iowa all year. They like him enough. So do we trade some of the relief excess? Who is it and what's he worth?
  2. He only has to clear revocable major league waivers. He'd never end up with any team who put in the claim. If this were outright/special waivers or otherwise irrevocable ML waivers, you'd be correct. But I agree the best option is staying in Mesa for the reasons Raisin explained.
  3. Scott Moore, a left-handed hitter, has a career .294 average against right-handers. Carlos Marmol, a right-handed hitter, has a career .286 average against righties. Jose Reyes, the catcher, has a career .333 average against righties!
  4. I guess I don't know the whole emoticon language so well. You had stone lips guy and not the lip-wiggle guy, so you were 'smiling' opposed to 'LOL'ing so I thought it might have been an idea you were in favor of. But it was sarcastic, got it.
  5. Yikes... so we end up trading two guys and our two biggest lefty bats for the roster space for one guy. Then once you trade Jones and your only OFs are Murton, Soriano, Pie, then are you forced to go out and acquire a 4th OF? Besides needing Floyd's permission and Union approval to trade him, it doesn't seem logical.
  6. OK... so all of Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Wuertz, Guzman, Cherry, Cotts, Ohman, Wood would make the roster if ready for the roster. What happens to 2-3 of them when all are ready? Which 2 miss the opening day cut?
  7. I haven't seen these endless discussion, but Guzman does have an option remaining this year.
  8. This has been said a million times, and it still doesn't prove anything. I wasn't making any accusations. Prior's one of my favorite Cubs. But it is odd to see his calves (which used to be huge) so much smaller. http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/getty/a3/fullj.getty-73493133sd007_chicago_cubs__5_51_14_pm.jpg That is a picture from this spring, you want to retract that at all? Ha. His calves are as big as my thighs. Yeah, I saw Prior this spring myself and I thought his calves still looked huge. I don't understand how so many people are saying the exact opposite. I'll call it photo perspective, I suppose...
  9. And that looks like it might be it.
  10. I'm going with Al's numbers too but it's a strange discrepancy. If she had just flip-flopped their numbers it'd make sense, but where did 86 pitches for Marquis come from? Hopefully we can get a third set of numbers to confirm.
  11. ?? Also, Al says he got his pitch numbers from Bruce Miles. Maybe he or someone else can clear this up.
  12. I never said you couldn't be frustrated but the point is that we can't fill that spot within our organization unless you're electing it to be Cedeno or Tomas Perez. Both of them are also the same worthless MI you're frustrated over. Sure, we could create threads that entirely reconstruct the team to "do a better job with the lineup" or we could acquire a top-notch MI that drops our current ones to backup but that's not realistic for this Spring. Since as things stand our 25th backup MI is: Cedeno, Tomas Perez, or Other. I'd choose "other," who has a great chance of being better than the other two. I suppose you choose Cedeno and that's a fine opinion too. I don't think anyone was serious in naming Neifi or Macias and they'd obviously not be chosen.
  13. Who would be the last middle infielder then? It certainly sounds like the Cubs are looking for a young middle infielder just as much or more than a veteran. It sounds like they might look for youth, but it's still annoying that after jettisoning all the worthless MI trash they've had, they might just end up with the same type of crap all over again. Then who do you suggest? They need a middle infielder and the goal is for it to be someone better than Cedeno or Perez. If your wishes were to not acquire another MI then we'd be rostering the "same crap" in Cedeno or Perez.
  14. I like Escobar better too in the longrun but he has a half season between rookie ball and Low-A before his 2006 season at AA when he batted .264. Can we really expect him to perform at the major league level yet? And even if the potential is there for it to occur, would he fit the current need by potentially not being any more ready than Cedeno?
  15. It's possible he could be claimed if the Cubs put him on waivers, yes. But if so, they are revocable so the Cubs could pull him back and then they'd either have to DL him or keep him on the 25-man. But these waivers are generally easier to get a player through because there is some level of courtesy involved since every GM wants it in return. If you know there's no chance you'd get the player as the waiver request would be revoked, then there would be little motivation to put in a claim other than to screw with the team and then expect it to happen to you. That's not to say there's nothing to fear but it's certainly not irrevocable waivers.
  16. Bruce, I apologize if this has been covered but I've been looking to see if you've weighed in on the 25th spot on the roster. It seems Lou wants it be another middle infielder but doesn't seem comfortable with giving it to Cedeno. Other than Tomas Perez, we don't seem to have any other practical option. Do you believe the spot will go to one of them in the end - or will the Cubs look to fill it in trade or on the waiver wire? If so, are there any names that might be sticking out right now?
  17. Looks like it will be Chris Woodward or Tony Pena Jr. the Braves are making available with Pena out of options.
  18. Actually this is only partially true. Prior has options left but his clock has expired. He could be optioned to the minors but he'd have to clear revocable major league waivers.
  19. But Damian also stormed out and said he's done with baseball forever.
  20. That's true but I think of it more as him juxtaposed to the Jones/Theriot/Izturis, Ward, Floyd, Catcher he'll be on the bench with. He'll never be the guy you're looking to against a righty with several better choices but if Theriot was in already, then this guy would need to be who you want for a lefty.
  21. If our 5th bench player is a middle infielder, as expected, who's being looked at through trade? I'd imagine our trade material is probably Wade Miller, Will Ohman, Novoa maybe even Marshall off the 40-man. This isn't likely to be someone who clearly starts over DeRosa/Theriot, rather another piece to mix in and flexibility to start both DeRosa and Theriot at times. At the same time, I'm looking for someone much better than our options of Cedeno and Perez. Huge bonuses for speed and/or ability to hit LH pitching.
  22. Pagan as a centerfielder is unnecessary anyway. If the plan is to give Soriano the go-ahead for center, then you'll only have a small handful of games that you'll need another centerfielder. In those games, we have Jones and Theriot. Jones plays a better center than either Soriano or Pagan have thusfar anyway. His issue has always been the erratic arm and last year coupling with it being hurt made it slightly less "erratic." Pagan's place on the team would be purely speed and another bench bat from the right side. Position-wise, we'd rather have another middle infielder. But if we put the 25th man on the bench, we could obviously fill both. I'd rather we have a better RH bat than Pagan in that case though, giving the speed to the MI.
  23. Ohman actually does have an option left, but then yes clearing waivers after would likely be difficult. And I agree with Ohman, that's why I said it's very difficult to send him down with last year's performance and his new contract. However, the problem comes in spots. If we roster Ohman, that means no chance for Cherry, DL-only for Wuertz, and more time to wait for Guzman... if we're carrying the 11 pitchers as Lou desires.
  24. With Lou's recent comments, he's saying he's leaning toward carrying 11 pitchers out of Spring. Zambrano, Lilly, Hill, Marquis, Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Wood, Cotts, means only two of: Prior, Miller, Wuertz, Cherry, Ohman, Guzman, X If Prior makes the club, it likely means we trade Miller. But then which 1 of: Wuertz, Cherry, Ohman, Guzman? It seems all of them are getting the nod around here. I'd rather the long reliever than the LOOGY or well, ROOGY and Wuertz you could keep behind in Mesa. But if Ohman doesn't make the team, are we trading him or are we really optioning him with recent performance and contract? And Wuertz would very soon need a spot that doesn't seem to be there. Is Lou going to be forced to carry 12 pitchers? Trade Miller, DL Wuertz, carry Ohman and the better spring of Guzman/Cherry?
