  1. True, that said though, I'll take Ted Lilly for a #4, or maybe a #3 over the likes of Gooz, Marmol, or Mateo any day of the week. He might be overpaid, but he is still an improvement. It's not our money, so if the Trib wants to spend it then let 'em. Lord knows we aren't going to improve from that steaming pile of crap known as the Cubs farm system. I don't care if the cubs spend the money either, what I do care about is HOW the cubs spend the money. For example, Gooz/Marmol + Lugo + Floyd>>>> Lilly + Izturis.
  2. Yeah, I pointed out earlier that he seems to give up a ton of dingers (28 last year in 181 innings). Can we do a wind-directional platoon at SP? And that was actually an improvement in his HR rate from the year before
  3. While I really like Padilla, I still have to take Schmidt over him. It all really depends on the $ and years, but I think theres a better chance Schmidt continues at this level or slightly regresses for the next few years compared to Padilla miraculously making the jump that Schmidt did. It'd be interesting to hear a scouting comparison of the two.
  4. O'Brien stated in the Cubs.com article that he would present a counter-offer to the Cubs. When you combine that fact with the above quote, it seems clear that the Cubs came in under 4/37, but were probably in the ballpark. Pun intended... Hopefully that ballpark includes 3/21.
  5. It cuts both ways...remember when Hank White's batting average was how many inches tall he was.
  6. yeah, I think I'd find another team to root for at that point I would too but only because of OJ. a world series team doesn't have an outfielder with OJ's obp. objects with broad penetration?
  7. the problem with that is it ignores market conditions. you wait to sign someone until January this offseason, you end up with Mark Redman. He will probably a great consolation prize for someone and a very judicious use of their money. I really like Ohka, especially for the amount some one is going to have to pay him and the length of the contract. Probably not for a team like the cubs, but I think he'll be a good signing. see edit and second post. I now have no comment :)
  8. Actually, stats disagree with you. ERA+adjusts for parks Jennings since hes been in the league full time 02:108 03:93 04:92 05:94 06:127
  9. yeah, I think I'd find another team to root for at that point I would too but only because of OJ. :?: OJ only killed 2 people that we know of. He changed his name when he went to college...he used to be known as Pol Pot
  10. What happened to Murton, do they not know that he's on our roster? I didn't even notice that part. I'm assuming such a series of events would leave the lineup looking like: Soriano Lugo Lee Ramirez Barrett Murton DeRosa Izturis That is not something I'd like to see. I don't mind it if our rotation is: Z Schmidt Jennings Hill Prior/Miller Westbrook > Jennings Shoot for the stars, man. Gotta add a few more >s in there.

  12. I definitely agree with both ends of the spectrum, but tend to think the middle can change based on assumptions. Right after the offseason everyone thought that Suppan would be way overpaid because of his success in the playoffs. Well now it looks like everyone has caught up to him and will be overpaid as well. Also, it depends on your risk adversion. Suppan has a lot less variance than someone like Lilly or Marquis. And we really have no clue what marquis will sign for. But for the most part, I agree with what you have.
  13. Not if you're willing to pay 9 to 10 million per year. Padilla for 9 to 10 million a year or Lilly/Meche for say 8 million? I'll take my chances with Padilla. padilla is foing to be hthe best pictehetr signed this winter. brioook it. its brioooked!
  14. Great, now we are going to be totally useless against all those ROOGYs.
  15. I think its a perfectly reasonable request...if only anybody was listening.
  16. They make the Cubs look like geniuses in almost every respect. Thank God for the Orioles.
  17. Ugh fine :) In 06 his ERA vs Bos/NYY was 4.55 and 4.31 on the season. So pitching against those two teams slightly hurt his ERA. In 05 his ERA vs Bos/NYY was 5.11 and 5.56 on the season. So pitching against those two teams slightly helped his ERA. In 04 his ERA vs Bos/NYY was 3.99 and 4.06 on the season. So pitching against those two teams slightly helped his ERA. The net affect is that a claim that pitching against Bos/NYY adversely affected his ERA is untrue. I thought you were debunking that coming to the NL would help him? He just did, I think. I was debunking the belief that you need to take into consideration that Lilly pitched against the BoSox and Yank's offenses, implying that they had an adverse affect on his overall numbers. Over the last three years that is clearly not true.
  18. Sure didn't hurt Vicenta Padilla. Now thats some one I can endorse!

  20. He's better than Gil Meche. Ted Lilly is not a good pitcher. And how is he a better option than Gil Meche? Since when is a 4.31 ERA, 15-13 "not a good pitcher"? Pitching many games against the boston and new york line-ups mind you as well. Move him into the NL Central and it's easy to see why he is a good option. 5 of 7 starts in 06 vs Bos/NYY he let up 3 ER or less. Must be good to do well against those line-ups! Just bunking your contextualization that Lilly's #s should be better not having to pitch in the AL east.
  21. I'd love for some one to give me a really good reason why we need a lefty. I guess we don't want to be succeptable to all those ROOGYs. And man, if we face a tough righty, those one or two lefties in the lineup are sure going to save us.
  22. Good point, I've never had my appendix out, but they did wait over 3 months after the surgery. I would imagine that they wouldn't have thrown him out there if they weren't confident he was healthy, especially because they were concerned about his confidence. MLB.com said that they would trade Penn (not Loewen) in a package for Hudson, so I do think he is available.
  23. good call. I'm pretty sure we don't have to since he's already signed. I was under the impression that we still had to, but I could be wrong.
