  1. He must not have realized that the Tigers would have to keep playing if they won too much. I think he's trying to get eliminated.
  2. On second thought it's probably a bit late for that, but Kielty should be starting every game versus a left-hander. He's just too good of a hitter against lefties to keep on the bench when the alternative is a damaged Kotsay hitting weak grounders.
  3. They need to get Kotsay out of the game and put Kielty in there.
  4. The other anouncers should really take this opportunity to hit Lou Piniella in the head with a brick. Otherwise he's gonna get a managing job or retire or something and years from now they'll look back and think, "Man, I wish I had taken care of that when I had the chance."
  5. It's not really a wrist injury, though, it's an arm injury. Anyway, I agree with TT's take on Lee. I wanted to trade him while his value was high after 2005. We might still be able to get a good return on him if the right deal came along, but it's less likely.
  6. Regardless of the ability of WARP1 to accurately measure wins above true replacement level, the BP marginal cost comparison still stands as a qualitative indictment of the Cobs organization.
  7. You probably should have started a rant thread instead of pulling a drive-by in this one.
  8. No, he isn't. Most players peak at 27-30, but that's because baseball is a game of both physical skill and experience. Physically, players peak earlier than they typically do in their baseball careers. Dunn's leaving his physical prime now and I'm not sure he's shown the ability to make the sorts of adjustments he'll need to make to continue being successful. Now, I'm no expert on these topics, and I certainly understand that I can be wrong. However, young players with old man skills tend to age poorly, and that describes Dunn to a T.
  9. Is Rich Harden going to pitch Game 2 then? Anyone heard yet?
  10. I actually wouldn't do Prior for Dunn. Dunn has had some good offensive years, but he's had to rely on old man skills to be productive. As Dunn continues to leave his physical prime, how well will he hold up? If we could get him without giving up Prior I would be all for it, however.
  11. It's not that they're the best, it's that they tend to get good results for the money. Having the best would be too expensive for them.
  12. He obviously just knows how to win.
  13. It's obvious that he WATCHES the PLAYERS, Vance. When are you going to learn that the numbers can't show hustle, heart or sheer gumption? We need to get all this calculator crap out of baseball.
  14. I noticed that myself looking at the list. I didn't see any other Oakland starters anywhere close to that amount.
  15. Maybe it's why Neifi is gone?
  16. I can't believe Murton got taken out of the game after going 2/4 with a HR.
  17. Theriot should be evaluated on his own merits, Rich Hill notwithstanding.
  18. Did Aramis do the Sammy finger thing after his second homerun?
  19. All that base-clogging will come back to haunt them when they try to get their running game going.
  20. Game score is a metric devised by Bill James to show how dominating a pitcher was in any particular game. To determine a starting pitcher's game score: (1) Start with 50 points. (2) Add 1 point for each out recorded, so 3 points for every complete inning pitched. (3) Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th. (4) Add 1 point for each strikeout. (5) Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed. (6) Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed. (7) Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed. (8) Subtract 1 point for each walk. The top game score in the history of baseball was Kerry Wood's one-hit, no walk, 20 strikeout performance against the Astros on May 6, 1998. His game score was 105.
  21. What was the weather like at Wrigley? Wind direction?
  22. This is the greatest thread ever. Edit: Nevermind, it got fixed.
  23. Frank Thomas really doesn't strike out excessively. He's even hitting for a pretty good average now (around .280 after today's game). This is really just a case of the Big Hurt being old and kind of broken down.
  24. Howard may be catching up to Pujols offensively, but he still isn't the better player. Pujols is actually a good defensive first baseman while Howard is pretty shabby. The difference in fielding runs alone between the two is worth a couple of wins. Pujols totally deserves the award more than Howard, gaudy homerun totals aside.
