  1. Divining what the voters looked at wasn't the point of posting the stats. If I wanted to understand the voters' thought processes, I could try reading tea leaves or casting bones.
  2. That one was bad, but it wasn't monumentally bad. Not nearly as ridiculous as Rollins winning it this year, IMO. Sosa was 7th in VORP that year and a whopping 36 runs worse than McGwire.
  3. These are the top 10 NL VORP leaders in order: 1. Hanley Ramirez 89.5 2. David Wright 81.1 3. Chipper Jones 76.0 4. Matt Holliday 75.0 5. Albert Pujols 72.1 6. Miguel Cabrera 71.4 7. Prince Fielder 69.1 8. Chase Utley 68.8 9. Jimmy Rollins 66.1 10. Ryan Braun 57.2
  4. Doesn't really help with athletic performance.
  5. Nah. The people writing the articles are still idiots.
  6. I hope he's right, but several of these seem very optimistic to me.
  7. You got me. I can't believe I fell for that.
  8. I would rather have Hill than Crawford.
  9. No. All it measures is the runs produced by a given player compared to a replacement player for that same position.
  10. Gross. Carl Crawford VORPed 38, while Hill and Marmol VORPed 40.3 and 34.5 respectively.
  11. What did we give up for Monroe, again?
  12. I don't want to pick nits, but Robinson Cano had an awesome 2007. His VORP was 40.5, or nearly as high as Aramis Ramirez and higher than Manny. He may not hit .340 every season, but he doesn't have to in order to be a great player.
  13. Will Carroll on Byrd's HGH: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=618 A choice cut:
  14. I know, I was being facetious.
  15. Clearly, no one but a computer could read any of this.
  16. Not necessarily. It sounds like Meph weighted each player's contributions according to his context. Rather than directly comparing baseball performance, Meph is trying to compare each player's value to his specific team. I don't know that I care for the approach, personally, but I would love to know more about the weighting algorithm, if Meph has a link or the inclination to write about it.
  17. Why is Helton so low? He's better than Lee offensively and defensively.
  18. Although Lee actually did EqA .306 to Aramis' .301.
  19. Just copy and paste the stuff from Soccer10k's post.
  20. No, just the quote tags and the stuff inside them.
  21. How would a Fuld hbp leading to a run be brilliant? Pinch hitting for Hart. That doesn't answer the question. Unless Fuld has mastered the art of surreptitiously leaning into pitches, or Lou found out Fuld's been nailing Osoria's wife or something, there's no reason to expect a hbp there. It certainly would have been a good outcome, but it wouldn't have been brilliant by any means.
  22. How would a Fuld hbp leading to a run be brilliant?
  23. Marqueef is doing what he was signed to do.
