  1. I don't recall there ever being a Hill/Dunn trade being discussed. I do recall a comment from Bruce Miles that Hendry valued Hill so much, that he wouldn't trade him for Dunn, but that's all I recall. Refresh my memory on the proposed Dunn trade that would have included Rich Hill. That was last year. Hill is no longer an untouchable. Music to my ears. Any chance that means he might be heading to Baltimore? There's always a chance. They're so early in the process right now, but as I wrote today, I think all the old presumptions are out the window. Would this include Pie, as well??? Possibly.

  4. Why would he do that? He would do it to get out of a bad situation. The Cubs may even offer a little sweetener. I look for them to make a huge push here.
  5. Bruce, nice article today about Tejada. I just hope that Hendry shares your enthusiasm. Do you think Hendry views Tejada as someone that the Cubs would be willing to part with "untouchables"? http://www.dailyherald.com/sports/sportsstory.asp?id=130468 Oh, I think so.
  6. Things get worked out all the time in this regard. If Player X is unhappy enough in one place, a lot of times he'll waive that trade opportunity to go to the new team.
  7. Actually, there are a lot of things that go on here. There are business-related meetings, and the minor leagues have a huge presence here. There's an exhibit hall with some cool stuff. My guess is that years ago, baseball people created these things as a way of drumming up publicity for the game in winter. Free agency has taken away from the meetings in recent years, and few trades have actually taken place. That may change this year.
  8. The question about targeting a shortstop is a fair one. I think they're fine there, and maybe the Furcal thing will be a blessing in disguise. I think Hendry made a very fair offer. I'd be happy with Cedeno starting. Got to head across the street to the winter meetings hotel. Maybe I'll even check out the doughnuts.
  9. I wouldn't get too excited over this Burnett stuff or these Texas rumors. Once again, people forget three little words when it comes to Kerry Wood: "no trade clause." Not to mention the fact that he's coming off surgery. They're not trading him. What Bruce Levine is reporting this morning is accurate and pretty much in line with what the papers have this morning. Leadoff man is the No. 1 priority. Things will follow from that.
  10. Putting all the economic and sociological arguments aside, I can tell you Pittsburgh is one of my favorite cities (FWIW). It's really an underrated gem. The people are extremely friendly, and there are some great places to eat and drink. PNC Park is just beautiful, and Pittsburgh's skyline provides a nice backdrop. (Too bad the press box is too high. Just like a writer to complain.)
  11. I'd be very skeptical of that one rumor that's been posted here. I'll be talking to Cubs people later in the day.
  12. I've checked into this myself, and JeffH is right. All of the formalities and paperwork of adding Eyre to the 40-man should be taken care of any time now.
  13. Got to use the vacation time at some point or else I lose it. I'll be back in the fray at the beginning of next week. I'll be attending the winter meetings, as usual, too. Hang in there.
  14. Thanks but now I'm confused. Hendry said that Perez and Cedeno would battle for 2nd base. Why is there no mention of Walker Bruce? I think you can guess the answer to that. They have every intention of trading Walker.
  15. Neifi gets $2.5 million in each of the next two years. Walker, ostensibly a starter, will get $2.5 million next year, wherever he plays.
  16. Murph was talking about me, and not Bruce Levine. I did write about Abreu today. It's possible Gillick will move him. If that's the case, I expect the Cubs to get in on the action. They like Pierre more than Crawford at this point. They really like Pierre, but I think they (over)value his speed more than anything. I'll hear from Jim Hendry a little later this afternoon. Me e-mail in box has been jammed, as you might expect.
  17. Furcal-Pierre is not an either-or thing with the Cubs. They'd like to have both.
  18. I've got to go on a conference call (with Neifi) at 11:30 this morning, so I'll make it quick: I'm not seeing much interest at this point in the players you mentioned. They do like Giles but feel he'll be overpriced. There is some question within the organization as to Giles' "declining" production. Funny, his OBP was higher than even D-Lee's this year. Hendry is going to do all he can to trade Walker.
  19. As I wrote in today's Daily Herald, Hendry has gone to the GM meetings wtih the idea of trading Walker. They'll make a push for Furcal. If they get him, they'll go with Cedeno at second base, but as I also wrote, somebody has to make it clear to the manager that Neifi is a backup.
  20. I won't get all the financials until later today, but my guess is all the dough is guaranteed.
  21. I remember the roundtable, as well. The moderator was pleased with what both sides had so say. It's hard to capture voice tone and such in print, and I'm sure Gary came off more harsh than it seemed. Back in March, I did a feature package on the whole scouts vs. stats thing _ you'd be surprised at how many people in the our general readership had no idea such a debate existed (we're a very specialized group here). In any event, Gary gave me a quote that said that the "work these (stats) people have done is phenomenal." He also told me that when he picks up a stat sheet at the ballpark, the first thing he looks at is on-base percentage. I have no reason not to believe him on that, and again, look at his track record over time. It's pretty good. As a whole, though, the Cubs really do need to start looking at the more sabermetrically oriented stats and how to apply them. You balance that with good scouting, and you've got something.
  22. So you are thinking it is a coincedence that the only two "moneyballers" besides Bean were let go/walked away? I'm not saying it's not but I find it interesting. The Gary Hughes' of the world hate the stat heads. I won't get many on this board to agree with me, but Gary Hughes doesn't "hate" the "stat heads." He's one of the more open-minded guys I've been around, and believe it or not, he relies on stats. He just happens to value the opinions of scouts. I think he has a pretty impressive record of procuring talent in places like Montreal and Florida. Just think of the teams Montreal could have had if they had money. I've talked to Gary on numerous occasions and find him very enlightened on a lot of trends in baseball. My belief is that there is plenty of room in this game for input from all sides. Theo Epstein, another talented guy, isn't just a "Moneyball" disciple. He relies on scouts, too. He'll be a tremendous addition to his next organization. Too bad for him and the Red Sox he lost a power struggle in Boston.
  23. Not necessarily. There's a lot to be negotiated here, with incentives. If I had to guess from this distance, I'd say the Cubs bring him back.
