    That's the problem. They may just be "marginal" upgrades but when you're around 89-90 runs each win brings your chances of making the playoffs up so much. All wins aren't created equally. Wins between 88 and 92 are the most valuable in baseball, economically and on the field wise. are you saying a win in april isn't as important as a win in september?

    I think if the cubs REALLY wanted Griffey, they could get him. Package Marshall, Epatt, and Murton together, and take a bad reds contract along the way. Too bad that probably would not be in our best interest.

    Yeah I'm of the opinion that any addition we have been talking about making is not worth the players we would trade, and I'd be content with standing pact with the offense. On the otherhand, I could go for another SP......

    In general, this makes sense, but the argument you're giving is fairly abstract. It is possible, for instance, that Jon Daniels is an emotional man who would want to make sure that Sammy stays happy no matter where he is, or that Daniels made a verbal agreement with Sosa and is unwilling to break it without Sosa's consent. Although it is true that NTC-less players have no negotiating leverage built into their contracts, other factors sometimes apply. But there you go, you said it yourself. Sosa isn't the reason, it's the GM's. It's Ultimately them that decide what he wants to do with a player without an NTC.

    Ok my 2 cents. FIRST and foremost. While sammy has been good against lefties this year, and historically has mauled them, I think I'd be content with just platooning murton with floyd/jones. Either way though, I'd welcome Sammy in open arms, I love the guy. 2nd. The idea that a player can sway trade talks WITHOUT an NTC is just ridiculous, I think the examples of Soriano and Vazquez have already been brought up. Plain and simple, Sosa is just as likely to get traded if the GM wants it so as say, Ryan Theriot. THERE IS NO BASIS TO SAY OTHERWISE. The only reason that it wouldn't happen is if the GM's didn't want it to work out that way. Without an NTC, Sosa is as much a pawn as the next guy, 600 Home Runs or not. PERIOD. 3rdly, we won't get Sosa. Hendry isn't smart enough to see him as an upgrade, and wouldn't want him anyway, so this whole discussion is all for naught.

    Pretty much, but he's got the defensive ability/reputation to actually get playing time in RF. Fun fact about Ethier: His OBP and SLG are identical this year v. RHP and LHP. Only a 4 point difference in OPS last year too, so he's not a guy that needs a platoon partner. I mentioned trading for Vazquez and then using Marshall in a deal, but the Dodgers want starting pitching, what about a 3-way deal with Ethier/Murton/Vazquez as main components? yeah thats a good idea, since vazquez is the only guy performing this year who can be had (other than oswalt). how does Cubs get: Ethier, Vazquez Dodgers get: Marshall, and Petrick White Sox get: Murton, and Meloan sound?

    If jones is producing again, then you don't need to get an OF bat as much. Go after a SS, or maybe a decent hitting C :P.

    Hahahaha...something tells me this guy is just jerking everyone around. He is apparently not the only guy with this rumor. Remember, Milwaukee radio reported it. FYI, this was posted by Lance on his blog LAST night. http://www.1530homer.com/pages/lancesBlog.html?page=1 i assume that he means escobar the SS. Bad deal for the reds.

    Rumor I heard is that Toronto is trying to acquire Jack Wilson. Guess they have been missing there idiot IF quota for the last year or so :P, gotta fix that!

    it couldn't be that these guys are all "better" than their major league counterparts because they've not been given enough of a chance to fail at the big league level, could it? i suppose, but the fact of the matter is, for the combined estimated 18 mil that your getting out of the vets, you could get slightly less to better production out of your cheap in house options. While i'm not going to go and say that there is a 0% chance that ALL of these young guys will fail, is it a stretch to say that we'd be better off? You have murton who's already produced at the ML level, Cedeno whos tearing up AAA who could definately do better than Izturis, Soto who has also had sucess at AAA that couldn't be any more of an anomaly that Kendall and Hill have been in 07', Pie who is our young stud that needs to go through the growing pains that could show some flashes, but will inevitably pay off more in the long run in his development than having pagan as your 4th of with mediocre offense. Petrick who had done good in limited time on the ML squad, and has been great in 07' in the minors, should definately outpitch Eyre if given extended time. The rulingn is out on Piggy though, but I think you will agree with me that you'd like to see him pitch on the ML team more than Ohman.

    Dunn can't be any worse than floyd is out there in right. And who's to say alfonso is sticking at LF, he could probably play in right, and there's no reason to think he won't move. Point is, when you're upgrading your offense as much as you are with dunn in the lineup, then you find ways to work him in. The cubs are in the hunt for the best bat possible with less priority on the position at which they play. Obviously we aren't going after a 3B or 1B only guy, but if he has the ability to play in the OF, MIF, or C, then you have to assume there's a chance of adding him.

    In my opinion, getting rid of ohman and eyre supercedes the need to go out and try to get a player at a position as iffy as reliever. If you rid us of these two, and call up piggy and petrick, we probably are better off.

    Dunn to the Brewers is not something I would be very happy to see. Make no doubt about it, Dunn is a great offensive commodity, and the fact that the brewers might get him for so little makes me cringe even more. Hart, Fielder, Braun, Hardy, Dunn? Ugh......
