    I took another look and started to like the idea of getting him if we can move Soriano or Byrd. But then I looked at his H/R splits from last year and they strike me as weird. His slugging was actually better in Oakland than it was on the road. His overall slugging % was down but he had 29 HR's. His K rate was up. On the more sophisticated side, his oWAR was 2.3, but his dWAR was -0.5. BAbip / tOPS+ / sOPS+ = .287 /100/ 123. Crap, I don't know. Maybe I need to reverse myself? Does he make sense if the years and money are right (2 years at $7 million each, 3rd at club option with raise to $9; $1.5 million buyout)? Plus we have to be able to trade Soriano and/or Byrd so we can make room for him and Jackson? I dunno. The OF situation confuses me.

    I remember a nearly identical report at some point last offseason about Garza. Its a sensible way to try and drive up the price. You know, the anti-Hendry approach.

    Speculation around the web is that TB could make him available. Reforming the picthing staff appears to be a priority. Looks to me like he would a positive addition. Interested? What would it take to get him? Do we have to clear Z from the books first? EDIT: 6.1 WAR last season after a truly awful 2010. Reminds me of how Cliff Lee evolved.

    I loved Willingham three years ago. Now I don't see where he fits, and he's probably going to be slowly regressing over the next few seasons.

    If we whiff on Pujols and Fielder, would you consider bringing Lee back for a year with a club option for second? Obviously not ideal, but he played well for the Bucs last year. BTW, I didn't mention Pena because I assume he will want at least a three year contract.

    Fell sort of badly for Mike. Not saying he was the greatest manager ever, but he seems like a nice guy. The team was so poorly constructed that he really had no chance. I don't want Ryno largely because I don't want him to come in here and ruin his legacy as a great player by being a poor manager. Looks like Theo isn't interested in any case.

    You really think the Mets can't demand McNutt-level prospects? With a poor FA market @ 3B there would be lots of interest which would drive the price up. Let me re-phrase that - they can demand but they aren't likely to receive...

    I just don't see the huge risk here. The Mets can't demand McNutt-level guys for him anymore, so you buy low. The real value to the Mets comes in shedding his salary a year early. But I also see the other side of this - wait a year and then sign him as FA.

    Why couldn't you sign him to an extension? And wouldn't the price be considerably less than, for example, King Felix, because he's only under club control for one (potentially two) year and is coming off an injury?

    Good question. I guessed he was refering to his career stat line from year-to-year, but if he means that he is streaky in-season, well so is everyone else.

    - I don't think he's that expensive given that you have him for one year and tthen can cut bait. - He wasn't injured until last season and he still played over 100 games. - Aramis wasn't a stud defender - he was average and we'd all likely have him back in a second. - He's not an up-and-down hitter. Look at his career stats. EDIT: Check that. He was injured a few years ago as well. My bad.

    Tim Kurkijan says he may be available due to the Mets' financial concerns. Looks like we need a 3B, unfortunately. Assuming the report is correct, would we want him? What would we give-up to get him? He had a down year (for him, anyway) last season (.254 /.345/.427/.771.; 114 OPS-plus; 1.4 WAR), but that was probably due to injury. When healthy he's unquestionably a stud on Aramis' level. (Career stats) He's only 29 and is signed through next season at $15 million, with a $16 million club option for 2013 ($1 million buyout). This looks like a great opportunity to me. The risk is low as he is only guaranteed one more year and the buyout is small. Could we trade for Wright and sign Fielder in the same offseason? If we do aren't we instant contenders?

    Those are a couple good points, but it is still a little disconcerting that Keith keeps having the same issues that plagued him last year. Phoenix is atrocious, and that Bolland goal was funny. I agree and think part (but not the only reason) of that is that Q keeps pairing him with Leddy. Nick is talented as hell and is going to be good, but he gets physically mandhandled almost all the time. I think it sometimes leads to Keith having to do more and getting caught in bad spots. Bolland and Hossa are showing just how important they are to this team,m and Frolik is really underrated. The Bolland-Frolik-Bickell line is **expletive** awesome. Remeber how bad the third line was most of last season? We might have the best 3rd line in hockey now.

    There's a million factors at play. Crashing at 220 mph in an open cockpit is safer than crashing at 65 mph while driving to work. But that track was conducive to bunching up a lot of cars and while the catch nets help fans out they don't do any favors to the drivers when they tear apart any car that reaches them. Several years ago a similar death occurred, don't remember who. When things decide to get bad they can get really bad. Not saying you are wrong, but can you explain to me how?

    I wonder whether that sport is just too dangerous. I know its not going anywhere becauase of $$$$, but racing around a narrow track at 220 mph in an open-cockpit vehicle without anyone around you would be pretty dangerous. Add a couple of dozen other cars and it becomes pretty close to inevitable that something like this would happen, no?
