  1. they're not really worth since the offense sucks so bad. That's 20-20 hindsight. If JH had gotten a good RF and Lee wasn't hurt, those signings would look great. As it stands, they both have been good, but the offense stinks so it doesn't stand out.
  2. No kidding. And try and lean into instead of just reaching.
  3. That "day-oh" thing is freakin' annoying.
  4. I would be shocked if Dusty was fired at any point during this season. Shocked. Eyes bugging out of my head  shocked, if it happens during the season. Let alone on this road trip. His seat ain't warm. I believe Hendry thinks he has the right man, and it's up to whether or not Dusty wants to return. I am not sure about that. I really think JH (finally) is seeing the light here.
  5. You're holding off judgement until after this weekend? If you're not convinced by now, you're either not paying attention or you never will be. Dude, take it easy on him. His point is that, realistically, JH has stood behind Dusty publicly, but that in light of the fact that he hasn't been extended and they are playing like c**p, he may only have through this weekend to turn it around. I don't think he meant this is the first time he noticed that Dusty is a bad manager. IMO, Dusty will be the manager for the rest of the year no matter what, and unless we make it to the WS (not win it, but make it), JH will not offer him an extension. I also think Dusty wants out.
  6. Looking him up, Wilson's not bad: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6642 Closing in on a 1.000 OPS.
  7. Some people actually predicted that the Cubs would have a hard time scoring runs this year. The problems we are seeing this year are the same problems of last year and the year before. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it. I wonder why Hendry doesn't see it though. And that problem is not injuries. Clearly not true Cubs fans Way to bring the thread down.
  8. no. Interesting. In any other employment situation "truthiness" would be a big issue. Sports is so removed from reality its frightening.
  9. And you defeated me. Congrats. All of my best guys got benched in the last week of the season (the three Pistons, Lebron, etc.) b/c their teams were well established in their seeds. My philosophy of drafting guys from winning teams is great during the reg. season, but can hurt in the playoffs. Still, I can't be unhappy with my results.
  10. Ugly. In a hitter's park, no? Is he traditionally a slow starter?
  11. You're fooling yourself if you think it's a temporary problem. With or without Lee, they have a crap bench. They need all the help they can get in that department. They've spent all their energy trying to find versatile bench players, meanwhile, they haven't bothered finding a bench player that can hit worth a lick. I don't care if a guy can only play 1B defensively, they still need bats, desperately. Here here. Team OBP = .312 (through Tuesday).
  12. I'm not comparing them to the Cubs. With that pitching staff (especially the pen), Cincinnati has perhaps the biggest "bottom falling out" potential of any team who's bottom hasn't already fallen out. I know we keep saying their pitching stinks, but it hasn't happened yet. Does anyone have pitching stats for current Cubs and Reds?
  13. Hill was a bust. Grudz was almost certainly the better choice, patricularly in hindsight. ;) I disagree on Dubois. Hollandworth was terrible, and Dubois had/has more upside. As for Choi, I'm going to dig up Tim's comprehensive study on Choi -- who should have been platooned with Karros. the cubs did the right thing by bringing in randall simon. Nah, that was one of those lightning in a bottle things. Simon was a crappy player in the midst of a crappy season who miraculously pulled a brief run of respectability out of his enormous butt. Sometimes you get lucky that way. I agree, and anecdotaly, my Dad saw him in ST with the Pirates the next season, and called me from a game to tell me he had gotten so big that he was as wide as he was tall and could not move laterally. I'll always remember that HR in Game 4 though.
  14. Makes you like all of us up here in Chicago. The only relief I get is when the Bulls are on...and that wasn't much relief last night.
  15. http://frank.harvard.edu/~jason/thoughts/picard.jpg "Make it so."
  16. May be if keep saying they really stink it will come true, but so far they look a lot better than we do.
  17. Merkcer was the nicest and least arrogant baseball player I ever met. that's fine. but the way he handled his spat with stone was lame and unprofessional It seems Stone was even more unprofessional. It seems the great "high and mighty" Stone just couldn't handle someone not bowing to him. It was ugly on both ends. Agreed. I like Len very much; am warming to Bob; miss Stoney.
  18. I'd b happy with Millar on the cheap. Nice career OBP and can back up a few positions.
  19. If only he was an effective pinch hitter. .123/.247/.200 makes Jose Macias look like Bonds. 123/247/200 as a ph in 63 at bats 253/361/463 as not a ph in 802 at bats does it really make sense to go ahead and decide he's not a good pinch hitter based on these limited numbers? 63 at bats is reasonable no., IMO. We have made judgments on less. That said, I'd still take a flier on him on the cheap.
  20. Agree that Jones should only hit against lefties in BP. Also agree that he is not the only problem - he's one of them.
  21. I'm not a big Dusty fan, but let's give him some credit. There's no way he would sit Murton in favor of Jones now. Murton has been the most consistent clutch hitter on this team this season and Jones has striggled since day 1. It may have taken a lot of persuading to get Dusty to play the kids, but I think he's sold on Murton and Cedeno. I agree. I understand that some folks may have left over spite towards Dusty given his pre-06' decisions, but there is absolutely no way he could justify benching Murton. There'd be a riot. OK, may be not a riot, but certainly serious consequences. I think its more likely that we are stuck with the current OF until 07'.
  22. Agreed, but he's the type of guy who gets hot and puts the team on his back for four weeks. Problem is that you never know what four weeks that will be.
