  1. This debate is old, but its pretty clear that Giles leveraged the threat of free agency only to squeeze more cash out of SD. Re the longterm contract with Pitt, perhaps SD already had their OF set at that point. What year was that and who was in SD's OF?
  2. Someone who is going to hit 45+ homers this year. And would have won the Cubs the Series in 2003 IMO if we signed him. He'd of stopped Alou from having a toddler-like tantrum, prevented Gonzo from booting a routine grounder, helped Prior pitch, and forced Dusty to get off his behind to go out and calm everyone down?
  3. The article does finally admit that Clanton is a headcase, but as we all know there's usually a little bit of truth to every lie. http://cubs.scout.com/2/527823.html Seems out of character for JH. I'll lend it some credibility if its backed by other guys.
  4. He'd have to turn it around in a way that belies his career nos. He gone.
  5. With the exception of 1983 I can't remember a time pre 1984 when there was a buzz about the Sox. The Cubs were on TV every day. The Sox were on fuzzy 44 then went to the ill fated ONTV subscription channel. Transitional fans got on the Sox bandwagon in '83 but '84 ended most of that. Even in '83 people were saying "Yeah that's great about the Sox but what would happen if the Cubs got good?" As far as not being old enough to remember, I'm 38. I remember the Sox coming very close to moving to Tampa Bay and would have if the Mayor wasn't a fan. Now if the Sox were popular in the '70s that's something I couldn't say Great point about the move to TB. I am old enough to remember and forgot. Reinsdorf definitely had a foot out the door. And there was also a time when the Sox had no t.v. contract, and WGN came in and scooped them up (back when the vast majority of Cubs games were during the day). .
  6. Lack of hustle = direct reflection on manager, IMO. Ozzie will savage you both publicly and privately if you don't hustle. Dusty will blame it on the rain.
  7. The sad thing I agree 100% with you. How egomaniacal must you be to drag not only a team of 25 ballplayers who want to win, but a legion of fans into the proverbial gutter just so you can leave town on your terms? But the question is, who replaces Dusty on an interim basis? During yesterday's pre-game, Santo was discussing the future with Chris Speier. Speier has managerial aspirations. Might not be the worst choice in the world. I think Speier would be a good choice as the interim manager. Me too. And I think JH's "vote of confidence" (above) had enough holes in it to be lucidly refered to as swiss cheese.
  8. I agree. Let me clarify what I wrote above - Guz has great stuff and isn't yet comfortable in the Bigs. You need to give him a chance to show that he will be. Also - and this may just be my perception - whenevr he throws first pitch strikes, he looks great. If it is in fact that simple, it shouldn't be a diffifcult problem to fix.
  9. I agree with J.R. The anti-Dusty sentiment has been around for quit some time. The anti-Hendry sentiment is now seriously building for the first time, IMO.
  10. This seems like an unneccesary convo. Play enough games over enough seasons, and every team has a few bad seeds. Not a big deal, IMO.
  11. I keep thinking that myself. Problem is that there is no reason to believe that our lineup will ever get better. Lee won't be back until the Break (no pun intended) and who is out there that we can trade for to spark this team? And where will he play?
  12. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.....There was a statistic known as On-Base Percentage. EDIT: D'oh! Double post.
  13. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.....There was a statistic known as On-Base Percentage. Your sig is great.
  14. Not even close, and has been shown ad nauseum by the numbers. You have dedicated threads to beat and bash the players you dislike. Take it there. To be fair: Pierre has stunk. Jones has stunk. Walker has been very bad on this trip (he has admitted as much). ARam has been very bad (Jones is out-hitting him for the love of all things Holy). I won't even bring up Hairston and Perez. The only people who haven't stunk as of late, IMO, are Murton, Cedeno and Barrett. See also my sig.
  15. Hindsight is 20-20. Most people didn't want to risk $5MM-$6MM on such an injury-prone player. No one doubts Nomar's ability when healthy. It is ironic though that the players the Cubs (wisely, IMO) don't take a chance on because of injury risk stay healthy and are productive (Alou, Nomar), while the guys we decide to keep despite injury risk are hurt yet again (Wood, Prior). And then we spent that Nomar money on Jones and Pierre, egads..... Well spoken.
  16. The problem is if you bring up minor leaguers who aren't ready, what are they going to show you? They're going to look overwhelmed at the plate and on the mound. How are you going to decide who can produce at a consistent level for 2007, if they come up and stink. Kaspar and Brenley were talking about the fact that Guzman will be a good major league pitcher. I haven't seen anything yet that suggests that. I disagree with that last statement. Guz clearly has plus-stuff, but he isn't comfortable being in The Show.
  17. If Guzman could just settle down and stop walking the park...he has good stuff.
  18. Well done. Really like the idea of giving Jackson a shot.
  19. Not everybody. In fact, I don't know how many people were. I know I wasn't. I have no idea why the Cubs were trying to plug a hole they didn't have, while at the same time neglecting the need for a big back. As to the topic of this thread, I don't think Hendry gets a free pass. Anyone who thinks JH gets a "free pass" on this bd. either just got here or hasn't been paying attention.
  20. DFA Perez, Bynum and Rusch. Promote Pie, Wuertz and Aardsma. Bench Jones and try and deal him for low ceiling prospects. East 1/2 his contract each year for the 3 years. If not feasible, shop Pierre for 1 good prospect and 2 mid level prospects. Play Pie in RF. Trade Williams for Choi. Trade Wuertz for Graffanino. Pierre Cedeno Walker Ramirez Murton Barrett Pie Choi P Graffanino Hairston Blanco Restovich Mabry I don't understand your reasoning behind the two moves I highlighted.
  21. If you were JH and decided to scrap the season based on our recent play, what transactions would you make? Keep the "40 man" issues in mind, and try and come up with a realistic trade scenario or two. And feel free to fire the manager and his staff. That happens all the time. EDIT: Remember that you are making moves with an eye towards 2007 and setting yourself up in the mid-season trade market and the Hot Stove League. EDIT NO. 2: For the purpose of this hypothetical, its not realistic to fire yourself (you are Hendry) b/c you just received a contract extension. I know many of you fantasize about doing so, but not possible here (or the real world, for that matter).
  22. As I said earlier, I agree. I also think JH realizes his mistake at this point, but for whatever reason (probably some sort of p.r. concoction) won't pull the trigger during the season. Part of me thinks there is a breach between JH and Dusty, and JH isn't going to let him out of his contract; rather make him own up and suffer with the rest of us.
  23. I never root against them, but I don't blame anyone for being frustrated with their play. They stink right now. The manager stinks right now (and has stunk for a while). If they are in this spot on Memorial Day, I'll raise the white flag. I also admit that I am far more excited by the Bulls and NBA draft night, a mere 6 weeks away.
  24. That's because almost every time he's up, Pujols is already on. (unless Pujols hit a home run) With someone on base almost every time you're up, you're eventually going to start racking up RBIs. That is true but he is still hitting over .300 with RISP which is pretty good when your average is at the Mendoza line. Edmonds is as clutch as they come. Uh-oh. Here it comes...
  25. I think the conclusion we can draw from this thread is simple. We stink. (points to sig for further evidence)
