  1. 9-1 Cubs. Neifi slaps ball into CF, Restovich scores from 2nd.
  2. His control will determine whether he'll be able to help the Cubs this year, though. Why? There's never been any issue with his control before.
  3. No gun readings that I could see. But it was definately harder than the 87mph that Maddux was throwing earlier. I'd guess low-nineties. Mabry HR, blown out, 8-1.
  4. Gooz's FB/change combo looking good today. Got a good few swings and misses, from lefties too. Control not so great. Went to three balls on three hitters. His one curve missed quite badly outside. F-8 on the third out, a big high pop-out, comfortable catch.
  5. Fell behind 3-0 to Weeks. One of them missed quite badly. 3-0 fastball, good movement, taken. 3-1 popped up to SS. 2 out.
  6. Got another swing and miss from Fielder. GB single to the left of the second baseman.
  7. Nice 2-1 changeup, got a swing and miss from Jenkins. F-7, pretty shallow.
  8. Nice example of why not to sac bunt when you're playing for max runs. Nice AB by Walker, got in a hole but fought off lots of pitches with 2 strikes.
  9. My bad, he's playing second. Walker's DHing.
  10. Hairy sac bunt, I presume. 2nd/3rd, 1 out, Walker up.
  11. No, still playing second. 4-3 groundout to advance runner from 2nd to 3rd in the last inning. Fielder airmails double play ball into left field.
  12. Well I say that, but upon checking Fielder popped out to short and Jenkins lined out to first. Anyway, outfielders haven't had anything to do.
  13. Gross K's, 2 out, then a single up the middle off the mound past a goalkeeper style diving Cubs shortstop into center field, Weeks scores from second. 3-1.
  14. Automatic double for Rickie Weeks. Well, okay, he singled and then stole second, but same thing. 2nd, 1 out.
  15. Which of these lineups would be better? A) The best hitter at each position, put them in any order. or B) The best hitter in each lineup spot, leadoff, 2-hole, third, cleanup etc. Let's see what we get for 2005... A) Chase Utley, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols, Vladimir Guerrero, Manny Ramirez, Andruw Jones, Michael Young, Victor Martinez, pitcher or B) Ichiro Suzuki (CF), Michael Young, Albert Pujols, Manny Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano, Jermaine Dye, Jorge Posada, Bill Mueller, pitcher And I think we all know which of those lineups we'd prefer. A is clearly far and away superior to B. Now that's my problem with the Cubs and Juan Pierre. Build your team by getting the best possible player at each position that you can get, and everything will sort itself out. Not by going after a good lead-off hitter, a good two-hole hitter, a good cleanup man, a good five-spot hitter and so on. It doesn't take a special kind of player to lead-off. Just someone that can get on base and run un-slow. If you have eight players that all get on base and can run un-slow, as many of them hitting for power too as you can muster, then you've got no worries. There's just no need for Juan Pierre types, with a good bunter batting second and so on... DON'T BUILD LINEUPS BY LINEUP POSITION!
  16. I was thinking as much about the risk of injury as of regression. Five years is five years, a long time to commit to any player, especially if it's backloaded.
  17. Anybody can take stats to prove their point. You are taking Jones last years stats expecting him to NOT improve over last year. I like Walker too, but let's not "spin" stats please. . Fine, let's take numbers for 2002-05, a big sample that includes Jones' two best ever years. AVG/OBP/SLG Walker .291/.347/.446 Jones .277/.327/.461 VORP per 162 games Walker 37.49 Jones 26.35 Walker has been better offensively on an absolute scale, and the difference when you adjust for position is enormous. End of discussion. PS. Walker, $2.5m/1yr Jones, $16m/3yrs
  18. It's quite a big gamble by both parties. I'm surprised.
  19. I like Hernandez's chance of a good year.
