  1. Hopefully he gets hired somewhere in the eastern conference where his boring system could actually get him somewhere.
  2. I voted "other". My grandfather, who was born in 1908 and was featured on that ESPN 100 years thing they did always said his favorite Cub was some guy that no one else remembers. Even I can't remember his name. IIRC he was a middle infielder that committed suicide and I guess my Grandfather was touched by the dual tragedy of his life and Cubs career being cut short by whatevere possessed him to take his own life. So Larry Biittner will always be my favortie Cub. He only had one good season (1977) but as a 9 year old kid he was the best player (in my eyes) on my favorite team. Honorable mention to Ryne Sandberg who turned the franchise around.
  3. Flyers Rangers is only interesting because Flyers/ Pens would be fun in round 2. Look out for the Flyers coming out of the east. a rematch of 2010 could be in the offing. Wings over Bruins in 7 and Dallas beating Anaheim are my upsets. From a historical standpoint, it's hard to pick the Sha-arks but They're getting Hertl back, Pavelski is having an awesome year and if they get any goaltending they ought to be in the WCF. The Sha-arks will never have a better chance than this year.
  4. Makes me feel better about not being able to go to the game tonight because I'm stuck at school. That fear of missing out on hockey commercial with Ovie really rings true for me.
  5. Wonder why they took so long. Deciding whether they wanted to play him in the last 2 games since they don't matter. They also may have wanted to see him practice with better talent.
  6. Why almost? I'd rather give the Avs a chance to choke against Dallas or the Wild, not that it really matters.
  7. Great games by Saad, Hossa and Smith. Kruger was a beast. Even Rundblad wasn't too bad. Good game by everyone not named Bollig.
  8. I'm not sure why, but these recollections reminded me of this. Back in ~2003 I had my students write about where they were when they heard about 9/11. One of them wrote that he heard about it 6 months later because he had been in prison and no one in there knew until they got out. His Parole officer was the one who broke the news.
  9. Hawks sign Stephen Johns to 2 year contract. Seems to me he'll need more than that to adjust to the pro game.
  10. I've always been a Vitters fan. I feel like he could still be a Dave Magadan type (back up corner guy that plays enough defense to not hurt you but not good enough to be a regular starter) but I doubt he'll ever get any real opportunity as a Cub. Lake reminds me of pre steroids Sosa, a guy that had to get traded twice before figuring it out. Lake is a better fit for the Cubs immediate future and beyond if Almora, Soler etal don't pan out.
  11. I think the Coyotes would be a tough match up for the Blues.
  12. They don't need to do that If they want to get a pitcher to make this dream sequence a reality, they have to give up something and they can get someone better if they include Castro.
  13. 91 *Everything goes right offensely for the entire infield. *They extend Shark rather than trade him. Instead they trade Castro not because he's bad but to make room for Baez. *They also trade someone from the Lake/Soler/Almora group for the pitcher they need to make a run.
  14. He's really the only player on their team that I genuinely feel could cause the Hawks a lot of trouble.
  15. Yeah that was the story for the last 30 minutes of the game, really. Credit Fleury for standing up to the onslaught. Toews injury looked like a shoulder, though they'll never tell us. That could be it for this season if he can't be back by the playoffs.
  16. Teams that have a chance in the West: The Blues but will they be able to score enough to win 4 playoff series? The Sharks but they have a history of choking. The Ducks but they have already begun their annual late season collapse Teams in the East that have a chance: The Bruins but can they play this level of hockey for 3 months? The Pens 'cause Crosby and Malkin Then there's the Hawks. Biggest concern right now is that Q is leaning pretty heavily on Toews with Kane out (he logged 24+ minutes the other night) and Hossa (had over 20 minutes in a non OT game). Another concern is will they get the secondary scoring they need. It will be hard for Bickell to replicate what he did last year. Bollig will be playing more and he provides nothing offensively unless the other team completely disregards his presence- which could happen maybe once a series.
  17. I'm guessing they still exist but he's made to only watch soccer.
  18. A nursing home that only showed one sport would most certainly show baseball, so you need not worry.
  19. The Pens fans here are starting to wonder if they're going to go the way of the Atalnata Braves: always good but only one championship.
  20. One of my colleagues is a Pens fan. He mentioned that, at this time last year it was the Pens that were beating everybody and getting picked to win the cup. As a result, he's more philosophical about their recent "struggles". They're in the same boat as the Hawks in some ways. Their playoff position is more or less set. They are missing a star player and their secondary scoirng has dried up a little bit. For the Bruins to win the cup, they'll need to play as well as they are playing now for 3 staright months. That's hard to do if those months are in the Spring.
  21. He definitely got the message about playing defense, which he did pretty well. I don't think his teammates were ready for the types of passes that only Kane can make coming from Tuevo. He was a little hesitant to engage in board battles but that's understandable. Overall I like what I saw.
  22. I'm not saying Olt isn't good defensively but I think this is an overstatement for any highly thought of 3rd baseman. To put it another way, The Rangers were more excited about his bat a couple years ago. It would be great if he was a plus defender still but he has to hit.
  23. I'm glad they LTIR ed Kane, it removes any temptation to rush him back. So far Tuevo is saying the right things about not needing to be the star and so forth. It would help reinforce that if the Hawks started him on a line without any of the stars so to speak. I'd like to see these lines: Versteeg-Toews-Hossa Sharp-Smith-Saad/ Morin Bickell/ Morin-Teuvo-Shaw Bollig-Kruger-Regin/ Morin That puts pressure on the 2nd line to score but they should be able to. Kruger's line handles the defense and Teuvo's line provides energy and should have it's way with other teams 4th line.
  24. Yes, the playoffs do count. Meanwhile, Kane would miss 10 games and 24 days if he goes on LTIR. That's back in time for the playoffs but there goes any chance of coming back ahead of schedule.
  25. They could and they may but they might also LTIR Roszival. Presumably, the Hawks already had a plan for how they were going to add Teuvo under the cap. That plan may have changed in light of Kane's injury. What remains to be seen is if he spends any time with Rockford to get used to the smaller sheet. The other thing to keep in mind is that if Teuvo plays more than 9 games they are burning a year on his entry level contract. It's a little bit like the rule MLB has where it's better to have the rookie start the year in AAA for an extra year of team control. If they send Teuvo to Rockford for a week, they might be able to use him just enough to get through the 1st round of the playoffs before deciding what to do about his contract. Last thing they'd want to do is be in a position where they use up that year only to get eliminated in the 1st round.
