  1. Just for the heck of it, if they are high profile, these would be my guesses: Cub:Nomar Giant: Bonds Oriole: Sosa Philly: Abreu Tiger: Pudge Mets: Piazza, Pedro Astros: Bagwell, Ensberg Yankees: Giambi, Sheffield, Posada All hypothetical, but it was kinda fun trying to guess. I think some of the picks are sort of obvious but anyway...
  2. Yes, I have have. But, sinceI heard it this moring on the score (yes that score), and since now one else is reporting it--i am hoping that I was day dreaming. BUT, I was in the car this morning around 9:30-1:000, and they broke away from the show (i think it was North...?) and said "the cubs are to recall Corey patterson." That was it, no when or for who. But, now that I am home for the day, and this board is not up in arms--I am starting to wonder If i sprinkled a little PCP on my cheerios. I am serious about this, I SWEAR i heard this. But, I can not believe no one else did?!?!? I can confirm that the Score mentioned that Corey would be recalled soon. They could not figure out if it would be in the next "7-10 days" they previously reported or sooner than that. They implied that Corey's recall might be imminent and coincide with a waiver deal trading away Jerry Hairston. This is where the Score ventured off into "I don't believe they know what they are talking about" land....... I don't understand this at all. Corey is still trying to make changes to his swing, and at this point is struggling in AAA. It makes no sense to call him up until he is more confident and has proven that he can hit using this new approach.
  3. My take on it is that Sosa intentionally slid spike high, not to injure anyone but try and knock the ball loose, as soon as he did it he realized what had happened and apologized. I don't think it was "dirty", but I do think it was intentional. On the other hand, I wouldn't blame Texas if they plunked Sosa the next time he came to bat, or at least pushed him off of the plate (no head hunting though), that is just part of the game.
  4. I didn't come away with that feeling at all concerning Baker's comments. It sounded to me like it depended on how Nomar was feeling and if he was able to play everyday or not. It is pretty obvious that Nomar probably will need a couple of days off a week. If Nomar isn't physically able to get out there than Neifi will play on a regular basis. While I know a lot of people really can't stand Neifi, I think he deserves some props. Is he the best SS out there? NO, but he has done a great job of filling in, playing some great defense and coming up with some timely hits. It was not his fault that Dusty had him batting 1 or 2 in the lineup for much of the season, but he brought it everyday. We could have done a lot worse. The other argument that is often brought up is Cedeno should be playing, but that is a decision that Dusty makes and Neifi shouldn't be penalized for that. I will love it when Neifi moves back to being a utility player because I think it will only strengthen the bench and will probably mean that Cedeno will see regular at bats in Iowa.
  5. AC = "Anno Catuli" which is Latin for "Year of our Cubs" the first two digits (should be 01) are the number of years since we won the division (last time was in 2003) the second set of digits (60) is the number of years since we've won the pennant (i.e. gone to the world series). the last set of digits (97) is the number of years since we've won the World Series. I always thought the AC was "After Championship" and then there was the Eamus Catuli sign which was Latin for "Go little bears" or something like that... Guess it could be either one.. I believe the AC stands for "And Counting"
  6. With new ownership in Milwaukee and a young cheap infield in the very near future (Hall, Hardy, Weeks, and Fielder) Jenkins contract is not in need of dumping and as he heats up I think the Brewers will keep him. If I was in Milwaukee the guy I would be looking to deal for max return is Lyle Overbay.
  7. I have never seen Neifi at 3rd, Hairston at SS, or Walker at 3rd. Is this just speculation on your part? I don't think Walker can play 3rd and I think it would be difficult to have Hairston play SS.
  8. I believe it is just for the rest of the season so that he can help the club anyway he can. He will have surgery after the season to clean out his shoulder and then be ready to return to the rotation next year.
  9. I hope Novoa doesn't get sent down, he has been pretty solid of late and is the only set up guy that is getting the job done right now. I would love to see Novoa, Williamson, and Wood be the set up guys for Dempster. I would guess Mitre will probably be sent down to get some innings in as a starter and be brought if Hill doesn't cut it, or Hill may get sent down.
  10. No, not on the DL, but he was shut down at the end of last year with inflamation in his elbow and did missed his last 2-3 starts although I believe he was used in relief once. Burnett has pitched over 200 innings once in his career with his next highest like 175.
  11. The Cubs already have enough injury prone starters in the rotation, not worth the risk. Fill that spot in the rotation from within and get an outfield bat. I was also going to say some bullpen help but with Williamson close to being back and the idea that Wood will be sent to the bullpen for the rest of the year I would be willing to roll the dice that they can get the job done. I kinda like the idea of Dempster closing and Novoa, who has looked very good lately, Wood and Williamson pitching the 7th 8th and 9th.
  12. Hitting between Lee and Ramirez, or Ramirez and Burnitz and I think you will see his Avg. Homeruns, and RBI's increase
  13. Bruce Miles, If you are lurking around, checking out this thread, we are sending up the bat signal to get your take on these rumors. Any inkling of this being a possiblity?
  14. "IF" Nomar does return does that mean Macias is gone? or does Ronny get sent back down? Personall I would rather see Macias go, but then you really don't have anyone to back up third base so I assume Cedeno would get sent down.
  15. As far as I am concerned I am just looking at it as a sunk cost for next year. Barring retirement or a trade Maddux will be on the books and in the rotation. I think we can all agree that he is not the player he once was and that he is definitely overpaid at 9 million dollars a year. It was a deal Hendry felt he had to make after the run in '03. Being a GM you may not always make the right decision but you have to do what you think will give your team the best chance to win the W.S. When the deal was first made, I think we thought of Maddux as our #3 or #4 starter and that we overpaid for him for a chance at the W.S.
  16. If you were not good enough to make the U.S. team and the Swiss asked you to play, you wouldn't do it? Now in Arods scenario, this is not the case, but I could see some other fringe athletes that might not make a U.S. team but could be a superstar for another country.
  17. Personally, who cares? I really don't think this world cup of baseball idea is going to be that big of a deal in the U.S. I think the other countries in the world will be all over it (because they don't have a World Series to call their own) I think there are going to be some serious labor issues with the players union and with the individual teams on letting their players compete, I just don't think this is going to play out like some think. Then you also have the Gary Sheffields of the world who, if there is nothing in it for them monetarily, will not play.
  18. That is a good question. When a high draft pick, or any draftpick for that matter is signed, Do the Cubs pay the signing bonus and then whoever owns the minor league franchise pay the salary? How exactly does that work.
  19. I got so sick of listening to those two blowhards (Morgan and Berman) I just couldn't stand to watch after Abreu hit in the first round.
  20. Anyone else sick of Berman yet? He was entertaining in the beginning when ESPN first came on the scene, now his schtick is just old and tired.
  21. Considering how much we are paying the guy, is that really an option? Better than watching him struggle on the big club
  22. There's one axiom that goes that a GM gets one manager to fire. Dusty is Jim's first manager. The key pivot point here may be how Dusty uses the kids. Yes, their futures are tied together, but if Jim at some points feels he must fire Dusty (that time inevitably comes for all GMs), he'll be allowed to do it and stay on. The Cubs value Hendry's overall contributions since he came on board 10 years ago. Bruce, I agree. I think Hendry has done a good job with the exception of maybe relying too much on injury plagued players coming in to this season. He took a gamble and it didn't work, he has still put together a pretty good core of young players and should be given the opportunity to fix his mistakes. With a fair amount of money available to him this offseason and any more changes I am assuming he is going to make yet this year he should be able to put something together.
  23. That goes along with several different theories I have thought of. I asked the question because I had two really phenomenal coaches in highschool that had both played minor league ball (both made it to AAA). They were great coaches and both went on to coach college first as assistants and now one of them is the head coach at UIC. Just thought they were phenomenal coaches who know the game extremely well.
  24. Every friggin negative thread turns into a Dusty Bust-a-thon. Christ. I thought we were talking about CP, Doobs and who will play CF for us? I sure don't want Hairston in there full time. Do you have an opinion on my question? no? Then don't respond. We know you are a Dusty apologist why do you feel the need to include it in every response you make? I simply asked the question as to why you never see elite college baseball coaches offered jobs as MLB managers.
