While on the subject of Baker's demise, I posed this question that was buried in another thread, maybe it will get more response here. Why don't you see the elite college baseball coaches ever mentioned as possible candidates for MLB managers? You see it on occasion in Football and Basketball I was just wondering why no in baseball, or do some of them filter up through the minor league ranks? Just curious as to what others think. -

Hey roast, welcome to the confusion Haha, Where is hoops when we need him??? I dont particularly remember the Don Baylor Firing, mainly because I was over seas when it happened, and didnt get the news till like a week later. All i was able to see each day were the box scores. Anyways, At what time would we expect an announcment, if baker IS fired? What I mean is, Obviously we would need a manager for the game today. So, Would it be safe to assume, if we dont have an announcment by, say, five central time its not happening today? I know its kind of silly to just assume he's being fired today, or tomorrow. But I just have a feeling. My guess would be, if they are going to fire Dusty, that it will be after the all-star break. MLB frowns on things like that that may detract from the All-Star festivities. JMO. -

Like others have said I think this could be a precursor to other moves. I would think both Hollandsworth and Burnitz' value are probably as high as they are going to be right now. Burnitz has had a solid year, better than I think anyone here has expected, and Hollandsworth is arguably (Ramirez) our hottest hitter right now with D. Lee out. Just a hunch, but I think you will probably see one of them moved in the near future. I also think that Todd Walker's name might be of interest to a few teams. -
The day you figure that out is the day you understand Dusty logic. For your own sake, I hope you never live to see that day.

Why in the world is Neifi batting in the two spot? While this lineup is better than what he intended on trotting out there last night it is still non-sensical. Hairston Walker Ramirez Burnitz Dubois Cedeno Perez Blanco That is a pretty ugly looking lineup. Or do you maybe bat Cedeno second.

Riggleman was a much better manager than Dusty. No doubt about it. Riggleman just had an extremely horrible team and had no other choice.

"The Cubs won't criticize Hairston publicly, but there have been questions behind the scenes about his on-field judgments, including missed signs. Insiders think his low grades in baseball instincts are hurting his chances to start more." (In today's Sun Time's) Are these the same insiders that continually think it is a good idea to bat Patterson and Perez at leadoff? Maybe instead of looking at Hairstons lack of baseball instincts, they should be looking at one Dusty Baker and his lack of instincts.

Question: Does anyone think a guy who has coached in the college ranks could be a good manager in the major leagues? You see it happen on occasion in basketball and football but you never see it happen in MLB, why is that?

I hope more players start spouting off, let's see some more disention (sp) in the ranks maybe the players will be able to force action to be taken.

This is just disgusting. Somebody better call Baker out on this garbage he is putting out there. Somebody better call out Hendry on this garbage on the roster they call a baseball team.

Patterson's problem, besides plate discipline, is his inability to go the other way, he tries to pull everything and his front side is flying open on every swing. Maybe Gene Clines should take some of the blame too. Back to basics Corey, maybe getting to the park a little early everyday and doing some flip drills would help him start taking those outside pitches he is missing by a foot the other way. Have you noticed that Burnitz has been going the other way on occassion and Aramis has gotten hot by taking that approach too. Quit trying to hit a homerun every at bat and drive some balls the other way for a double.

Who is making excuses? Hendry put together a second rate team, Baker manages likes a second rate coach, and the team is players are playing like a second rate team. Why does everybody have to divide it up into black and white. It's not players vs manager, or manager vs front office. The entire organization has failed. Most of the players, most of the coaching staff and most of the front office personel have failed to do their job, that's why the team isn't as good as it should and could be. Again, not an excuse, but don't forget the injuries Many of which could have been predicted. Kerry Wood hurt? Surprise. Nomar hurt? Shocking. Fox blowing out his arm? Every team has big time players get hurt. When you build a fragile team, with enormous weaknesses, the injuries will happen and your weaknesses will be exposed. I totally agree. Not using that as an excuse, and injuries do happen, but they have also contributed to the worse than expected record. It has just been a convergence of many different things that have formed the "Perfect Storm"

He certainly is part of the problem with this lineup. OBP is OBP. It's needed everywhere. Michael has a terrible approach at the plate. He's talented enough that if he adjusts, he should be fine, but he hasn't shown any indications that he will. The "he's settling into the position" excuse is growing thin with MB. He's 28 years old. He played C exclusively in 2001, 2003 and 2004. He played C virtually exclusively in 2002, with just 6 appearances at 1B. Until he shows that he can be more than a first pitch hack who routinely grounds into double plays because of his tendency to swing at pitcher's pitches designed to ground into double plays, then he will remain part of the problem. Thank you for seeing things dispassionately. The amount of rose-colored glasses wearing in these fora is staggering. It's nice to know that people believe in the Cubs unconditionally, but enough is enough. I don't think I had the rose colored glasses on, I clearly mentioned that Barrett tends to ground into too many double plays due to his approach at the plate. Also, most guys have been catching all through the minors, and didn't Barrett come up as a 3rd baseman? I am not making an excuse for his defense, I didn't say it was good, I just said I thought it could improve.

Who do you replace him with? Henry Blanco is a fine backup catcher, but do you want his .200 BA in there everyday? Is there any catchers out there that are available that will significantly upgrade the position? It is fine to say we need to replace someone, but is it realistic to say that you are going to be able upgrade? I am not trying to be sarcastic, but who would you replace Barrett with? Soto?

I believe this is only Barrett's second full season of being a catcher. I think his defense will improve and while he doesn't take a lot of pitches, he doesn't strike out a lot either, but will tend to have more GIDP. While he has his faults, I hardly think he is the problem in the lineup.
