  1. Damn, Brewers are gonna be dangerous this year. And Milwaukee is going to be a good fit for Grienke with his anxiety issues. He'll do well in another small market.
  2. It can't get a lot worse as far as injuries to key players go. The Packers are still a young team who can only get better from here. They've drafted well the last few years, too. They'll be in contention, I'm sure.
  3. Vikings have officially ruled Favre out for MNF, too.
  4. Per ESPN: Rodgers is officially out of tomorrow night's game. Matt Flynn will be the staring QB for the Packers. It's going to be a bloodbath, folks. Like lions v. Christians in the Roman Colosseum.
  5. A "personal services contract" is what, exactly? He makes appearances at team-related functions on behalf of the Cubs? Interacting with fans at the Cubs convention and at any other events sponsored by the organization? Must be rough. But still, glad he's back.
  6. I was going to say I loved him for his clutch, extra-innings triple in the 2003 NLCS, but B-R says that was Glanville. How many bad CFs did that team have? I just looked them up. That team had some awful players on it period. 2003 was lightning in a bottle. Sure was a hell of a lot of fun, though. Up until that game that shall not be named.
  7. You know, I'm pretty sure if Kerry gets himself a good investment banker or something he'll never want for anything again. I very much doubt he'll have to take a job in the offseason just to make ends meet.
  8. I forget: Do leadoff hitters need grit?
  9. I have a feeling Kerry was so eager to play back here again he took the first lowball offer Hendry gave, not caring about the money and wanting to end his career with the Cubs. I greatly admire that, if it is indeed the case. He might have some explaining to do to the Player's Union, though.
  10. I was always more of a Brian McRae fan, myself. He stole home once! Yeah, I always preferred McRae too. While I hated to see McRae go, for some odd reason I thought we were getting Carl Everett back instead of Lance Johnson. McRae was a switch hitter, but he was completely atrocious from one side of the plate, and near the end of his Cubs tenure I thought he should have stuck to hitting from just his strong side of the plate. He was so bad from one side for so long I couldn't figure out why he kept sticking with it.

  12. I love the idea that only conference winners can participate in a playoff. It gives the traditionalists their season "that matters", which is not a bad thing at all. You lose a Big Ten conference game, that in some years could kill your shot of being in the playoffs. It also kills the "should have been selected" argument. The lines are black and white. You win your conference, you go to the playoffs. You don't win your conference, you play a bowl game. The only downside is that non-conference games will have almost no importance anymore. The only way you could make them important is to have overall record break 3 way ties for conference championship game opponents and help for seeding in a playoff. But if that were the case, the first 3 weeks of college football will suck because no one is going to schedule anyone dangerous. In my proposal it would be the 11 conference champs, which, as you said, keeps the importance of the regular season. The 5 "wild card" or "at large" (or whatever you want to call them) teams would be determined by BCS rankings... the five highest non-conference champion BCS teams. Strength of Schedule is part of that equation. And from there, overall BCS rankings could seed the playoff.
  13. Why would something like "all conference champs are invited" be a bad thing? 11 conference champions and 5 WC teams sounds fair to me. And if they're so bad they won't make it past the first round, now will they? so they shouldn't be there. You could say that for a lot of the 14-16 seeds in the NCAA tournament every year, too. Are you against a basketball playoff?
  14. I'm struggling to find the humor in this deal, regardless if you're a douche bag White Sox fan or not Be sure to reciprocate once Kerry shuts down the Sox late in a crucial interleague game.
  15. I would have tried to get him to take 2/5, but I'm a greedy SOB that way. Glad to have you back, Kerry.

  17. I'd rather have Hank White than Koyie Hill, but that's like saying I'd rather you punch me in the face rather than kick me in the face.
  18. Tim, don't scare us like that! haha
  19. That's all well and good, and I'd love to see a salary cap as much as anyone, but you'd have to make some serious, serious concessions in order to get a hard cap. The Player's Union doesn't want one either. I doubt Cliff Lee would have gotten 5/120 if there was some sort of hard cap in place. I'm no fan of Selig, but I'm sure he'd instill a cap if it was strictly up to him, but it's not.
  20. I just got so used to Pat signing on with "...along with Cubs legend Ron Santo, it's Pat Hughes reporting..." that it'll take me a long time to get used to not hearing it again.
  21. Very interesting reads. He lists the starting rotation and position players for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th teams of the last 60 years. In the article he links to his criterion for ranking pitchers and hitters. Very interesting read if you're a big stat head. http://www.lehigh.edu/~dmd1/baseball.html
