  1. Surely we can pull this trade off, and then see if some team will take on Marquis for this year without us picking anything up. I don't care if we get a player in return who will never go above AA in his career. Just get his salary off the books.
  2. Wow. If the Padres take that, Jim Hendry ought to be arrested for rape.
  3. Hill, please. I would like to hang on to Marshall if possible. If we get Peavy, and then Hendry re-signs Dempster like he says he wants to, where does that leave Marquis? And if we ditch Marquis's contract, doesn't that leave us more than enough money to re-sign Kerry Wood?
  4. Yeah, but I can get my hands on a Peavy Padres jersey and some blue sharpies. I win. Bah
  5. Get it done, Jimmy! I'll be first in line to buy a Peavy jersey-tee if he becomes a Cub.
  6. Are the Pads still looking to dump Greene? Maybe Peavy wouldn't cost so much if we could take him off their hands.
  7. 100% agreed. Our bullpen could be godawful next year. We need all the arms in there we can get. Plus, my man crush on Kerry Wood borders on unhealthy.
  8. Peavy, Harden, Z, Lowe, Lilly..... Excuse me, I need to go change my pants.
  9. I love how Fred always capitalizes every letter in "CUBS." It took him a while to stop referring to them as "ORPHANS", the name he knew them by in his childhood. ;) I kid, Fred. I kid.
  10. Oh god...is this actually possible? I'm finally starting to believe that there is actually a realistic chance of this happening. I don't like how they (according to Rosenthal, anyways) would rather keep Dempster and Let Wood walk. If we got Peavy I'd say Wood would be 43324x more necessary than Dempster. I'm worried about the bullpen as it is. IF the Cubs get Peavy, I want no part of resigning Dempster. Let him walk, take the picks, and bring back Woody. Agreed. While Peavy, Z, harden, Dempster, Lilly would be a legendary rotation, the pen would be shaky at best, and Id rather bring back Wood to solidify it, plus maybe grab a lefty bat. With Peavy, Z, Harden, Lilly as 1-4, Marquis would be a sufficient #5, or who knows, maybe Rich Hill can pull himself up. If we could hang on to Marshall, he'd be a servicable #5. If given the option, I'd rather retain Wood than Dempster. And let's not get too excited, yet. Remember the Cubs were the "front runners" for Roberts last offseason, too.
  11. If we trade for Peavy I doubt we have enough left to trade for Hermida, I would guess we would sign Raul Ibanez. I like the idea of Furcal, another possibility is Orlando Hudson. We also need to find a relief pitcher or two somewhere. I've liked Ibanez for a long time and would love to have him in the middle of the lineup.
  12. not only is it a way, it is an absolutely bloody fabulous way to start the offseason then sign ibanez...done... does anyone here really think we could land peavy and/or greene and still acquire hermida? I'd rather sign Tex and trade Lee for prospects.
  13. Spitting image, yet nobody agrees with me whenever I mention it. I see it. It's almost as close as Palin/Tina Fey.
  14. Great career, Greg. At least you did it clean. Enjoy retirement.
  15. lol oh god, I don't miss seeing those at all. If I had any sort of computer skills, I'd make a .gif of a Fukucopter, throwing some video in there backwards to make it look like he was doing a complete rotation.
  16. To those who would like reading little articles about certain things in the history of baseball, interesting stories, oddities, the history and evolution of uniforms and equipment, interesting people, moments, etc, I HIGHLY suggest picking up "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Takes a Swing at Baseball" at your local bookstore. The entire "Uncle John's" series is great if you like reading about the odd and obscure things in life. This book in particular is fantastic, though. The "Uncle John's" books are in the humor section of bookstores, usually, although the book as a whole isn't really comedy, though it does have some funny stories in it. Here's the link on Amazon if you care to order it online: http://www.amazon.com/Uncle-Johns-Bathroom-Reader-Baseball/dp/1592238823/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1225661024&sr=8-1
  17. And sign Tex for 1B. If we get Tex and Peavy this offseason I will orally service Hendry.
  18. I suspect nothing on price of the deal? Ryan Dempster the person is one hell of a guy from everything I've seen. I think just about anyone here would love to go out drinking with the guy for a night. However, i'm not sure if I want him pitching on this team again next year with the money he's going to command. He was a big part of the regular-season success this year, but nothing in his career to this point shows that this was anything more than a fluke. Go after Peavy, or hit the FA market. It's freaking LOADED with arms that are far less of a gamble than Dempster.
  19. Howry would have been the obvious choice if not for Lou's raging boner for him.
  20. Actually, I've noticed a heck of a lot less whining than I expected to hear when the delays first started to become inevitable. Maybe it's because so few people are interested, but most people have taken the "there's nothing you can do" angle, and despite thinking Selig looks dumb, agree that he made the right decision. There was really no "right" deisicion that Selig could have made. I'm not a Selig fan by any means, and think he's done far more harm to the game than good, however he was damned if he did and damned if he didn't.
  21. That has to make them the favorite to win the National League next year.
  22. The 2009 Cubs: We'll actually show up for the playoffs if we make it. Honest!
  23. They did just draft a college closer who probably has very little chance of succeeding in the starting rotation. Cashner could provide a significant amount of bullpen help if Marmol is dealt. Not to mention there are some decent relief options out there in free agency. I don't see Cashner breaking with the team in Spring Training, but he definitely could be a September callup next season if the Cubs keep him as a reliever. Yeah, I love Marmol, but I'd give him up for an elite pitcher or hitter. Peavy is an elite pitcher. I can't think of any logical deal I'd make that trades away Geovany Soto. Yeah, you'd have to acquire a guy that gives you such an improvement over what you have that it would completely offset the obvious downgrade you'd get from losing Soto and going with what is likely to be crappy catching production. I just don't see how that could work. Superstar 1B prospects are far more common than superstar catching prospects. It would take a LOT for me to agree to part with Soto.
