    I don't think the Braves will want to take on Shields' contract. The nice thing about Dempster for the Braves is the Cubs probably eat most of the salary due the rest of the season and then the Braves have no further financial commitment.

    This validates to the Braves that they weren't overpaying with Delgado for Dempster and there was no way they were going to get Grienke for the same price. It may also push the Dodgers to realize they are not offering fair value. This can only mean good things. Thankfully we have smart guys running the negotiations that aren't going to panic. If they give in on this Dempster deal to the Dodgers they not only lose now but in the future when other teams figure they just have to wait them out and watch them cave.

    Well, for one thing, 10% of the starts he would have made in the regular season are now gone. For another, I assume the reports that the Braves don't want someone who isn't enthused about playing for them are true. Of course the Braves will say they have moved on, it is part of being a good negotiator. Bottom line is if they wanted Demptser for Delgado a few days ago they still want it now and are just playing on the hesitation to see if they can get a better deal. They probably wanted Greinke more anyway but now that he is gone they will want to move on Demptster again if he is now going to approve the deal. As far as fans and Braves players being pissed, all he has to do is say he is sorry but he had some personal things to get in order and now he has done that and is excited to be able to finally be able to join a great organization like the Braves and play for his good friend blah, blah, blah. Everyone will forget all about the rest once he makes his first start.

    Dempster seems like he would enjoy being the center of attention for a few days while everyone waits with baited breath to see if he will accept the trade.

    Couldn't see much of the swing, but nice to see it was a no-doubter. Are those tie dye uniforms?

    Cashner seems kind of fragile. Maybe he will wind up being a good pitcher but I can live without the aggravation of dealing with another starter where you have to hold your breath every time he pitches and hope he doesn't get hurt.

    By rule the manager has to start the player at that position that received the next highest player vote total - which is LaHair. No word yet however on if the AL manager starts a lefty it would mean that Jeff Baker will automatically gets the start in LaHair's place.

    Bob also refused to exonerate Castro. He and Rizzo can spin it however they want but even if he was waiting for Rizzo to get to the bag there was no reason to not at least take a couple steps toward first and get some momentum going for the throw. To handle it the way he did was not a smart defensive play.

    That's annoying. Not that any of those four are indefensible picks, but something about it is annoying. Part of the reason it is stupid to let the managers make any selections. I don't think they let the head coach in any other sport do it.

    The Rays and the Giants could both use short term stop gaps at 3B due to injury so maybe the Cubs can get one of them to pick up Dewitt's salary and send over a low level minor leaguer.

    rob was saying he wished we'd held onto him until closer to the deadline; you seem dissatisfied with the trade for reasons that aren't completely clear. And I stand by it. Bowden was most likely a Cub regardless of the outcome of this trade. I have to imagine the Cubs would have had waiver priority. So the outcome is really a PTBNL for picking up what looks to be almost the entirety of Byrds contract? Unless the PTBNL is some sort of "last year's draft pick" situation, I have to imagine this is just marginally better than letting Byrd play out the contract. With stakes like that, I'd rather roll the die and hope another team needs a CF closer to the deadline. I think the whole AL has wavier priority over the Cubs, or is that just the mid-season waiver deadline? The whole AL would have had waiver priority.

    What about Corpas? I know Castillo had some control issues, but I'd much prefer hang on to him over Lopez, who should be nothing more than starting ptiching depth. I don't see any reason to keep Coleman and Lopez. They both should fill pretty much the same long reliever role in the bullpen. IMO they would be better off sending one of those two to Iowa and keeping Maine as a second lefty.

    When the Rays went to the WS in 2008 the local writers voted Jason Bartlett the team MVP and really meant it.

    From some of the comments both Cespedes and his agent have made I think that a big priority was not just the money but a chance to be in a MLB starting lineup opening day. I have a feeling they looked and saw that the A's gave them the best chance to do that and it is probably why they gave the A's the inside track on making the final deal.

    Mariners and A's open the season March 28-29 at the Tokyo Dome. It is about 1 week before the season starts for everyone else.

    I agree - Soriano is actually more useful to this team as currently contructed than Burnett would be. I would say just ride it out with him this year and hope he has a bounce back season that increases his value. If nothing else the one less year left on Soriano's contract could make it easier to trade him next offseason when we hopefully have a better option to replace him with.

    Seems to me that the Cubs have plenty of crap pitchers on the 40 man roster they can drop to make room for Concepcion so that doesn't seem like a big deal to me. They can start with Andy Sonnanstine and work their way down from there.

    They didn't do it the same season they drafted Aaron Rodgers.
