Thanks, Bo! CUBS QUIETED BY THRESHER ATTACK IN 7-2 LOSS Clearwater Snapped Daytona’s Four-Game Winning Streak And Avoided The Sweep By Bo Fulginiti DAYTONA BEACH, Fla—Friday night’s series finale between Clearwater and Daytona began as a showcase of two crafty young southpaws engaging in a pitchers duel. That was of course until the top half of the sixth inning. In the thick of a 2-2 tie, the Threshers erupted for four runs on four hits capped off by a two-RBI bases loaded single from shortstop Omar Bramasco, as Clearwater avoided the series sweep and downed Daytona by a final of 7-2. Cubs starter J.R. Mathes (8-6) was solid but not spectacular in his 19th start of the season, as the dependable lefty gave up five earned runs on eight hits in six full innings of work to take the loss. Threshers first baseman Bryan Hanson fueled the fire for Clearwater at the plate, as he went 2-for-5 including a solo homerun in the seventh frame that sealed the deal. Clearwater starter Keith Ramsey (2-3) pitched 5.1 innings and gave up just two earned runs on five hits while he struck out six to record the win. A bright spot at the plate for Daytona was catcher Jake Fox, who went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in a losing effort. With the loss the Cubs had their four-game winning streak snapped as the fell to 17-23 on the second half, as Clearwater improved to 15-25 before heading back to Bright House Networks Field for another home stand. Daytona will now prepare to finish up the final three games of the current home stand, as they usher in the last place Jupiter Hammerheads for a short series beginning on Saturday night. The Cubs will send All-Star righty Handy Wells (6-2, 3.48 ERA) to the hill to make his sixth start of the season. First pitch of Game 1 is set for 7:05 p.m. EST, with a special fireworks show scheduled after the final pitch.
