I absolutely love Javy, warts and all. I just can’t imagine him in another uniform and don’t want to. The parallel I draw with Javy is with Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky got a lot of credit for knowing “situational awareness.” The color commentators always said Gretzky knew where he and everyone else was on the ice. Gretzky understood the moment in time when the game could pivot on where he positioned himself and the puck. He simply understood hockey. Javy understands baseball. IMO, his “situational awareness” is phenomenal. His bunt single in the last game against the Dodgers is his latest example: Goeddel was getting slapped around pretty good by the Cubs. Young Javy would have swung at anything in the nearest area code. Instead he lays down a beautiful bunt single. Two batters later he’s coasting home on Rizzo’s double. Just plain smart baseball.
